Chapter 578: Mad-Eye Moody's Defense Against the Dark Arts
Chapter 578: Mad-Eye Moody's Defense Against the Dark Arts
However, Ron's happiness didn't last long. When he glanced at the morning schedule, his previously excited face turned sour, as if he had swallowed a fly!
This was because before they could attend Mad-Eye Moody's Defense Against the Dark Arts, they had to endure a Potions class with Professor Snape.
"I wish we could skip this Potions class," Ron complained.
Harry couldn't agree more.
"If you two spent more time preparing for class, Professor Snape wouldn't be able to catch you out," Hermione retorted.
"Save it, even if we don't make mistakes, he'll find other reasons!" Ron grumbled, knowing full well that prepping for class was out of the question, now and forever.
True to their expectations, Snape maintained his usual dour expression throughout the class. Whenever Harry and Ron made the slightest mistake while brewing their potion, Snape would suddenly appear behind them, adeptly making them lose points, followed by a scathing tirade.
It wasn't until Neville accidentally burned his cauldron that Snape's attention was diverted, sparing them from further torment.
However, this also resulted in Snape flying into a rage, harshly sentencing Neville to detention and ordering him to disembowel a large bucket of Horned Toads before lunch, or else he wouldn't get to eat.
Neville nearly burst into tears at the order.
"Heaven forbid, has Snape eaten gunpowder today? He's never been this harsh on Neville before, even when he broke a cauldron," Hermione remarked as they left the Potions classroom, finding Snape's behavior this time to be excessively severe.
"I think he's just in a bad mood lately," Ivan shrugged, speculating.
A few days ago, Harry had recounted his dream to Dumbledore, and the old professor likely relayed the information to Snape. Learning that the Dark Lord had regained some of his power and was plotting something sinister would be enough to put anyone in a foul mood.
Moreover, as Voldemort's power gradually returned, the Dark Mark on the Death Eaters' arms would occasionally become unbearably hot, a forewarning that would fill every two-faced Death Eater, who had evaded the Ministry of Magic's trial, with dread.
Thinking about this, Ivan frowned, remembering that Dawgert also bore the Dark Mark. Although from what he knew, Dawgert had no loyalty to Voldemort, this issue still posed a significant problem if left unresolved.
This realization made Ivan understand that the tasks issued by the System, such as the one to clean up Knockturn Alley, were indeed necessary. The reward for that task included knowledge about magic marks, which might provide a way to counteract the Dark Mark.
Meanwhile, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were speculating about the reason for Snape's foul mood. They all agreed it had something to do with Mad-Eye Moody taking the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor this year.
After all, they were well aware that Snape had coveted this position for years, but Dumbledore had always prevented him from getting it.
Ron even suspected that the Curse on the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor position might be related to Snape, speculating that he was secretly placing curses on the professors to drive them away.
"He must think he can't handle Professor Moody, which is why he's so angry!" Ron declared with conviction, almost convincing Harry and Hermione.
Ivan, on the other hand, sympathized with the heavy burden Snape carried, not only as a double agent but also as someone who often had to take the blame for various issues.
After lunch, to secure a front-row seat, Ivan and the others hurriedly grabbed their textbooks and rushed to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
Clearly, many others shared the same thoughts. By the time they entered the classroom, it was already half full. Ivan and the others had to find a relatively front seat to sit down.
After a while, the sound of a wooden leg thudding on the ground came from outside the door, followed by the appearance of Mad-Eye Moody at the classroom entrance.
He arrived right on time, not a second too late!
"Put away your textbooks; you won't need them in my class!" Mad-Eye Moody, leaning on his wand, limped to the center of the podium and gruffly said, glancing at the *Defensive Magical Theory* book Harry had placed on his desk.
Hearing this, the young wizards quickly put away their textbooks and looked at Mad-Eye Moody with anticipation.
From their experience with Defense Against the Dark Arts Professors over the years, they knew that those who only read from the textbook were often not very competent. Professors like Mad-Eye Moody, who asked them to put away their books, were the ones who were going to teach them real skills!
Mad-Eye Moody, as usual, took out the attendance list and began calling out names. His normal eye moved down the list, while his eerie blue magic eye restlessly scanned each student who responded, memorizing their faces.
"Very good, it seems no mischief-makers dared to be late for my first class."
After the last young wizard responded, Mad-Eye Moody nodded in satisfaction, threw the attendance list onto the desk, and hobbled a few steps closer. Seamus, sitting in the front row, could clearly see the fine lines of Mad-Eye Moody's gruesome scar.
"Before coming to Hogwarts, I received a letter from Lupin. He told me about the basic situation of this course and mentioned that he taught you how to deal with those pesky Dark Magic creatures last year.
I believe you have learned quite a bit of the basics. Lupin wrote that you did well and could handle Boggarts, Red Caps, and Hinkypunks on your own.
So this year, we won't cover those topics. Instead, we will focus on defending against spells!"
Mad-Eye Moody spoke quickly, his slightly raspy voice not particularly pleasant, but the young wizards listening didn't mind. They were very interested in what Mad-Eye Moody was saying.
Especially when he mentioned that Lupin had praised them in his letter, the young wizards all looked proud. In the previous year's Defense Against the Dark Arts class, they had successfully defeated many monsters.
A few young witches even asked about Professor Lupin's current situation.
Mad-Eye Moody didn't intend to answer, but instead changed the subject and suddenly asked, "How much do you know about Dark Magic?"
After Mad-Eye Moody's question, only Hermione raised her hand. However, Mad-Eye Moody's magic eye noticed that Hermione's lips were pursed and her eyes were looking elsewhere, and the others seemed uninterested in answering.
Just as he was feeling puzzled, Ivan's voice came through.
"I know a bit, Professors! The Ministry of Magic categorizes offensive spells into three types: Curses, Hexes, and Jinxes, based on their type and strength. The evil Dark Magic we know, such as the Unforgivable Curses, falls under Curses.
Hexes and Jinxes are mostly spells that restrict or restrain, and some less dangerous Curses are also included."
