Chapter 578: Caught So Quickly?
Chapter 578: Caught So Quickly?
After sending a message to Tang Yi saying, "I'm leaving first", Qiao Sang followed Maya out of the Beast Companion Center.
The Evaluation Mission had a time limit, and she didn't want to waste any time.
"I didn't expect you to actually take my mission", Maya said with a smile as they walked.
"Since I've taken your mission, you should be able to tell me the real situation now", Qiao Sang said.
"What?" Maya's smile faded.
Qiao Sang didn't beat around the bush and got straight to the point:
"I just asked the staff, and she said your mission was upgraded from one star to two stars because it has been nine months since it was posted. During that time, 16 Beastmasters took the mission, but none of them completed it. That's different from what you told me when you approached me."
As she spoke, Qiao Sang's expression grew serious.
"If you want me to complete the mission successfully, you have to tell me the truth."
Maya fell silent for a few seconds before responding:
"I have a suitor named Nadapong. Every time a Beastmaster takes my mission, he threatens them and tells them to give up."
Qiao Sang was taken aback.
She had thought it was about hiding the number or strength of the wild beast companions, but it turned out to be a matter of personal interference?
This mission's difficulty has nothing to do with the wild beast companions at all!
Qiao Sang suddenly regretted taking the mission. She wondered if it was too late to switch to a different one...
The atmosphere between them became awkward and tense.
"Why does he do this if he's your suitor?" Qiao Sang finally asked, unable to hold back her curiosity.
"Because I rejected him", Maya said with a cold laugh. "He hopes to make me beg him through this."
Qiao Sang: "…"
This mission has been posted for nine months? How persistent is he? Qiao Sang couldn't understand it at all.
Then she thought of something and asked, "What level is he as a Beastmaster?"
"C-Class", Maya replied.
C-Class Beastmaster... Qiao Sang cautiously asked:
"How many General-Class Beast Companions does he have?"
If he had two or more General-Class Beast Companions, it could be troublesome.
"One", Maya answered.
That was better... Qiao Sang felt relieved.
Seeing Qiao Sang's calm and composed demeanor, Maya silently sighed in relief, thinking her intuition was right—there must be a high-level Beastmaster protecting her from the shadows.
Not far from them, a familiar about a meter tall, resembling a rock, followed silently. Its left eye emitted a faint green light, recording everything it saw.
Meanwhile, in a nearby café, Qu Zhuo sipped his coffee while staring at the screen of his computer.
The screen was split into two, showing Qiao Sang and Tang Yi's current activities.
...
About twenty minutes later, Qiao Sang and Maya arrived at a clearly run-down area.
People of various skin tones gathered in small groups, giving off the vibe of street thugs and homeless individuals.
They looked Maya up and down with bold gazes, but when they saw the obviously expensive familiar in the black-haired girl's arms and the Steel Sparrow following her, they quickly averted their eyes.
In a corner, a black man in his mid-twenties pulled out his mobile phone and typed a message:
[Maya has brought another Beastmaster over.]
...
"This is where I live", Maya said, stopping in front of a two-story building with a small yard.
Compared to the buildings nearby, this place clearly showed signs of recent renovation.
Maya took out her key and opened the door.
She slipped off her shoes and had only taken a couple of steps inside when a little girl, about seven or eight years old, wearing a Goose Yellow Dress, came sprinting from the sofa's direction and threw herself into Maya's arms.
"This is my daughter", Maya said, gently stroking the girl's head with a tender expression.
The girl turned her head and looked over shyly, her eyes darting back and forth between Fangy and Steel Treasure.
Wait a minute... Qiao Sang's mind struggled to process the introduction.
She remembered the mission issuer mentioning a suitor named Nadapong...
Was the mission issuer divorced or widowed?
As Qiao Sang's mind raced with wild speculations, Maya continued:
"My husband works in the Nineteenth District and rarely comes back."
So, he's neither divorced nor widowed... Qiao Sang fell silent for a few seconds to digest this information.
After a while, Qiao Sang asked, "Why don't you move to the Nineteenth District together?"
"My daughter is of school age, and to attend school in the Nineteenth District, we need to own a house there. We can only afford it in a few years, so for now, we'll stay here", Maya explained. At this point, she seemed to recall something and sighed.
"My husband is also a Beastmaster. If he were here, Nadapong wouldn't be so bold."
Realizing that the Beastmaster she had hired was still a student, she coughed and changed the subject:
"What would you like to drink? I'll get it for you."
Qiao Sang didn't hesitate, "Just water, please."
Maya turned to prepare the water and suddenly noticed her daughter still clinging to her leg. She looked down and said softly:
"Go play for a bit. Mom will get you some milk while I get water for your sister."
The little girl finally let go.
Once Maya left, the little girl asked in a clear voice:
"Sister, why are you holding your familiar?"
Qiao Sang smiled, "It's soft and comfortable to hold."
"Yah."
Fangy proudly lifted its head.
"Is it really that soft? Can I touch it?" the little girl asked tentatively.
"Of course." Qiao Sang released Fangy, and it immediately jumped down, walking over to the little girl.
The girl tentatively extended her small hand and touched Fangy. Her eyes lit up as she felt the softness, and she petted it a couple more times.
Maya returned with the water and milk, only to see this scene.
She couldn't help but smile, but before she could say anything, the previously docile familiar took a step back, its eyes sharpening as it bared its teeth, showing a wary expression toward the door.
"Is something outside?" Maya asked quickly.
The little girl promptly hid behind her mother.
Qiao Sang didn't answer but nodded slightly to the left.
Steel Treasure immediately materialized and floated to the door, poking its head out.
Maya was taken aback; she hadn't expected the Beastmaster she hired to have a Ghost-type familiar following her.
A shrill "Mumu!" came from outside.
Steel Treasure then floated entirely outside the door.
About ten seconds later, the front door was opened by an unseen force.
Steel Treasure used Shadow Control to bring in a familiar with a green body and a head that looked like a bush.
"Mular!" Maya exclaimed, recognizing the familiar.
Qiao Sang: "???"
What is this?
Did it catch it so quickly?
If she releases this familiar somewhere far away, will her mission be complete?
