Chapter 576: Mad-Eye Moody: Are You Suspecting Me?
Chapter 576: Mad-Eye Moody: Are You Suspecting Me?
Unfortunately, Ivan was disappointed to find nothing there.
"Are you observing me? Why?" Mad-Eye Moody, with his keen senses, suddenly turned his head and fixed Ivan with his blue magic eye.
Ivan's expression changed; he hadn't expected Mad-Eye Moody to be so perceptive.
However, after a brief moment of surprise, Ivan regained his composure, his face showing a hint of apology as he explained, "Please forgive me, Professors! I'm sure you've heard the rumors about the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor position."
"You mean the legend? That every Wizard who takes on the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor position meets with a terrible fate?" Mad-Eye Moody asked.
"I believe it's more than just a rumor. The previous Professors all met unfortunate ends, and none of them lasted more than a year!" Ivan spoke confidently, adding a touch of flattery, "But I think a legendary Auror like you might be able to break this curse!"
"Don't flatter me, boy!"
Mad-Eye Moody snorted and waved his hand dismissively, not buying it. He bent down, his eerie blue magic eye fixed on Ivan as he said, word by word, "I think that's not what you really wanted to say! Your look just now told me you were suspecting me, didn't it?"
"Why would you think that, Professors?" Mad-Eye Moody's words took Ivan by surprise again, and he frowned.
"I did my research before coming here, boy!" Mad-Eye Moody grinned, his cane thudding heavily on the floor.
"I must say, Albus hasn't been very discerning in his choices for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position over the years. One was a Dark Wizard, another a talentless fraud, and one a werewolf! I heard you exposed all of them, so it's only natural you'd be suspicious of me."
When he mentioned Lupin's identity, Mad-Eye Moody lowered his voice to ensure only Ivan and a few others could hear.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were quite surprised, not understanding how Mad-Eye Moody knew about Professor Lupin's identity.
Ivan, however, was not surprised. Both Mad-Eye Moody and Lupin were members of the Order of the Phoenix, so it was only natural they knew each other well.
What did catch him off guard was Mad-Eye Moody bringing his suspicion out into the open, which left Ivan somewhat embarrassed.
Fortunately, Ivan's thick skin allowed him to maintain his composure even when caught red-handed. He responded with admiration.
"Professors, you truly are a legend among Aurors. It seems nothing can escape your notice! I apologize for my earlier rudeness!"
"Heh, this time your flattery seems a bit more sincere!" Mad-Eye Moody chuckled and continued, "But you don't need to apologize for this! Being vigilant is a good habit!"
"I understand that feeling, Hals!" Mad-Eye Moody lowered his head, his face suddenly tense, "I've captured too many Death Eaters in my life. Many of the fugitive Dark Wizards see me as a thorn in their side, and if they had the chance, they would do anything to get rid of me!"
"So I always have to be like this..."
As he spoke, Mad-Eye Moody picked up a doughnut from the table, sniffed it, and then poked it a few times with a silver knife from his pocket to ensure it wasn't poisoned before finally putting it in his mouth.
" Hmm, these sweets look decent. I'll take some back with me!" Mad-Eye Moody mumbled, savoring the taste.
Ivan watched Mad-Eye Moody's overly cautious behavior and was momentarily speechless. Living in constant fear like this, wouldn't it drive him mad?
Mad-Eye Moody, however, didn't find anything wrong with his actions. He had long turned this caution into a habit. After swallowing the doughnut, he continued speaking.
"I read the newspaper from a few months ago, and I have to say, your argument in the trial was impressive, Hals! If Dumbledore hadn't told me some of your stories, I wouldn't have believed a young wizard could have such legendary experiences."
"I can say with confidence that if you join the Ministry of Magic after graduation, you'll be the most outstanding Auror in history!"
Mad-Eye Moody looked at Ivan, his words filled with unbridled admiration.
"If I have the chance, I'll consider it!" Ivan shrugged, neither confirming nor denying.
"Is that so?" Mad-Eye Moody detected the reluctance in Ivan's words and a hint of disappointment flickered across his face. However, he didn't push further. He picked up a plate, took some sweets from the table, and just before leaving, he turned to remind Ivan, "Remember, always be on your guard, boy!"
Watching Mad-Eye Moody's retreating figure, Ivan's doubts dissipated. From his mannerisms and keenness, it was clear that he was the real Mad-Eye Moody.
"It looks like we'll have a great Defense Against the Dark Arts professor this year, just like last year!" Harry remarked.
"He's a true master of Dark Magic defense and a legendary Auror in the Wizarding World!" Hermione nodded in agreement.
Then, the young witches turned to Ivan and continued, "I think Professor Moody is right, Ivan. You'd make an excellent Auror. If I become the Minister of Magic, I'll hire you as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, how about that?"
"Wait, Hermione, weren't you planning to liberate the house-elves? How did you suddenly start talking about becoming the Minister of Magic?" Ron asked, puzzled.
"Those goals aren't mutually exclusive, are they? Only by becoming the Minister of Magic can I truly change the wizards' discrimination against house-elves! I plan to go to the kitchen and talk to the house-elves more to understand their thoughts," Hermione said with conviction, already considering what roles to assign to Harry and Ron.
However, the two boys paid no attention to Hermione's fanciful ideas. Becoming the Minister of Magic wasn't that easy.
Ivan, on the other hand, was secretly relieved that his words from the previous night had some effect. At least he wouldn't have to worry about Hermione pulling out that "vomiting" badge and forcing them to wear it anytime soon.
With that thought, Ivan returned his attention to the Daily Prophet he hadn't finished reading.
Apart from the front-page photo of Death Eaters attacking a campsite, Ivan also saw a scene of Sirius Black being apprehended by several Aurors.
"Sirius Black was too reckless. The Quidditch pitch was chaos; he should have stayed to protect you!" Ivan shook his head, unable to hold back his comment.
"I think Sirius Black believed we could protect ourselves!" Harry spoke up in defense of his godfather.
Ivan rolled his eyes. They were just lucky. If they had run into a group of Death Eaters, the defensive magic they had learned in a few years would have been useless.
However, Ivan understood how much Sirius Black despised Death Eaters. Given his character, it was normal for him to charge in at the sight of Death Eaters boldly appearing outside the Quidditch World Cup campsite, setting fires, and abusing Muggles.
