Chapter 575: Alastor Moody
Chapter 575: Alastor Moody
Malfoy's words made Harry so angry that if it weren't for Hermione and Ron holding him back, he would have almost thrown the plate in his hand.
"Are you looking for another beating, Malfoy?" Ivan slowly put down his newspaper, glancing at Malfoy with a hint of exasperation.
How many times has this happened now? Malfoy never seems to learn. Or does Harry really have that much of a draw?
"You—" Malfoy's pale face flushed red. He wanted to say something threatening to avoid looking weak, but seeing Ivan reach for his wand, he quickly swallowed his words.
The previous confrontations had taught him the stark difference in their abilities. Engaging in a fight would only result in more pain for himself.
"I just came to congratulate Weasley's father and that Azkaban escapee for making the papers," Malfoy finally managed to say with a sarcastic tone, then stormed off with his two cronies in tow.
At that moment, Ivan suddenly spoke up. "That's all thanks to your father leading the chaos at the Quidditch World Cup, isn't it? Otherwise, there wouldn't have been such a misunderstanding."
"Bullshit!" Malfoy shouted, his face showing a hint of panic.
Harry looked at Ivan in surprise, not understanding why he said that.
Ron, however, had an excited expression. "Ivan, you must have discovered something, right? I knew Malfoy's father wasn't a good guy!"
Ivan ignored Ron and kept his eyes on Malfoy's reaction. Seeing the other boy's agitated state, he became even more certain of his suspicions.
The chaos at the Quidditch World Cup was most likely orchestrated by Lucius Malfoy.
"You're slandering! My father was in the tent sleeping all night, he didn't go anywhere!" Malfoy yelled.
But his words were unconvincing. Hermione quickly found the flaw and retorted sarcastically.
"Is that so? With all that commotion, your father was sleeping in the tent? He must have a heart of stone!"
Malfoy was left speechless, stammering after a long pause. "My father just sleeps very deeply."
"Don't try to fool us, Malfoy! I heard your father used to be a Death Eater, didn't he?" Ron, emboldened by his success, continued to press, even repeating gossip he had overheard at home.
"When the Dark Lord fell, your father claimed he was under the Imperius Curse to avoid punishment."
"Death Eater? Who said Death Eater?"
A raspy voice suddenly interrupted their conversation. Everyone turned to see Mad-Eye Moody limping towards them from the other end of the Great Hall.
As Mad-Eye Moody approached, the scar on his face twitched, and his large blue magic eye darted around, scanning Harry, Ron, Malfoy, and the others before settling on Ivan.
"I heard someone mention a Death Eater! Tell me, who said it?" Mad-Eye Moody demanded loudly.
Harry, Hermione, and Malfoy were startled by Mad-Eye Moody's aggressive reaction. Ron's body trembled, and he dared not speak, unsure if his words were correct or how Mad-Eye Moody would react.
From what he had heard about Mad-Eye Moody, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor seemed a bit unstable, constantly on edge and suspicious of everyone. It was said that he had retired from the Ministry of Magic because he couldn't distinguish between a friendly handshake and an attack.
Ivan's mind flickered with a thought, preparing to test Mad-Eye Moody, but Malfoy beat him to it.
"We were just talking about Sirius Black, Professors! That lackey of the Dark Lord, the Azkaban escapee," Malfoy's eyes darted around, and he glared viciously at Harry before speaking.
"Trying to trick me? You're still a bit green, boy! I know that Black, and he's not a Death Eater!" Mad-Eye Moody roared, slamming his cane on the ground with a heavy thud, cutting off Malfoy's words.
Before Malfoy could respond, Mad-Eye Moody slapped his head as if remembering something. "Ah, I know who you're talking about! Lucius Malfoy!"
"Listen, boy! I know your father, Lucius, and I know exactly what he's like. A man like that belongs in Azkaban!
You'd better not end up like your father, or Azkaban might have another inmate. I'll be keeping a close eye on you at school!"
Mad-Eye Moody's words were sharp and unrelenting, showing no regard for the fact that Malfoy was just a fourteen-year-old kid.
"You're threatening me?! You're finished! I'll tell my father, and he'll have you fired!" Malfoy took a few steps back, looking at Mad-Eye Moody with fear, and ended up bumping into Goyle and Crabbe.
"Go on! Little brat, run home and tell him! I'll see how much courage Lucius has!" Mad-Eye Moody spat disdainfully.
Malfoy pouted, too afraid to argue, and hurriedly fled with his two cronies.
Seeing Malfoy's panicked retreat, Ron couldn't help but laugh, while Harry turned to Mad-Eye Moody with gratitude.
"Thank you, Professors!"
"No problem! Dumbledore asked me to keep an eye on you when he brought me here. I can't let a Death Eater's child get too close to you! Who knows what twisted ideas they might have," Mad-Eye Moody waved his hand dismissively, his voice low and serious.
"I've seen some Death Eaters before. They're experts at deception, acting harmless and friendly before suddenly using the Killing Curse to strike when you're not paying attention!"
Although Harry, Ron, and Hermione didn't think Malfoy had the nerve, they appreciated Mad-Eye Moody's protection.
The trio even thought back to the previous year with Professor Lupin, and their attitude towards Mad-Eye Moody changed completely. They no longer avoided him because of rumors or the grotesque scars on his face.
Ivan, however, didn't let his guard down just because of a few reassuring words from Mad-Eye Moody.
To him, even the name he saw on the Marauder's Map wasn't enough to fully confirm the man's identity.
So when Mad-Eye Moody arrived, Ivan subtly observed the Auror, who was well over sixty, especially eyeing the area around his waist, trying to spot the flask that might contain Polyjuice Potion.
