Chapter 571: Lanchi's Invisible Guardian
Chapter 571: Lanchi's Invisible Guardian
They sped across the bay in a sleek, aerodynamic magi-speedboat, the lights from the bridge reflecting off the water in a muted glow, while the skyline of the Demon King's City, Necalis, remained elusive in the distance.
"The Vampire Clan's envoy will arrive in Necalis today, and it's likely the sky won't brighten until late morning," commented Lysandra, gazing up at the six o'clock night sky.
To welcome the visiting Vampire envoy, the Demon Clan had even activated a sky-veil barrier over the royal capital, blocking out the sun like an eclipse.
Looking across the Necalis Bay towards the far shore, the dark towers and diminutive mansions of the island seemed fantastical, as if crafted from dark gold, and the city still held an air of mystery and beauty, alluring like a newfound love at dawn's first light.
An amber-hued magi-vehicle skimmed swiftly over the water's surface.
As they raced alongside the elevated bridge, drawing ever closer to Necalis Island, the sound of flapping wings and rushing air signaled the approach of a small dragon cavalry officer, who struggled to catch up.
"Stop! Prepare for inspection!" the officer of the Magic World Police shouted sternly over the wind and waves.
Today was the day the Vampire envoy was due to visit, and several roads near the royal palace on Necalis Island had been blocked off and subject to speed limits. Yet, here was a member of the Demon Clan, boldly taking the sea route straight towards the palace, seemingly unconcerned.
"I work at the palace..." Lysandra quickly turned and offered weakly.
Before she could finish, Lanchi's voice rang out, clear and firm. "No need to worry, Lysandra."
There was no sign of him slowing down. Instead, he simply pulled out a document from the drawer on the driver's side and held it up without so much as a glance back, allowing the pursuing officer to see its contents.
"It's you, sir!" The Magic World Police officer immediately saluted, his voice filled with respect. He pulled sharply on the dragon's reins, changing direction in an instant.
"Next time, I'll be sure to recognize you, Mr. Maccassi. My apologies!"
"..."
Lysandra turned to watch as the officer flew away, then looked at Maccassi beside her in surprise.
"I did a small favor for their superior once," Maccassi explained to Lysandra.
"I don't usually drive this fast, but today is a special case. I needed to make sure you got to the palace on time. But I assure you, I wasn't speeding. I never break traffic rules."
He tossed the document back into the drawer, where a copy of the Magic World's current regulations could also be seen.
"Oh."
Lysandra was left speechless for a moment.
It was only then that she realized the friendly, princess-like Demon Clan member beside her was, in fact, an entirely different kind of existence.
He seemed to hold incredible power, wealth, and influence in this city of Necalis, with friends everywhere, willing to lend him a hand. Just like how he had effortlessly captivated Miss Tia the day before.
Soon enough, they reached the opposite shore and resumed their journey on the roads.
The closer they got to the royal palace on Necalis Island, the heavier the traffic became.
"To be honest, this is my first time visiting the royal palace on Necalis Island," Lanchi remarked, checking the time and turning off the Necalis City broadcast playing in the vehicle.
In the heart of this bustling city-state, one could hear the broadcast programs playing from speakers everywhere, even without personal devices.
He was certain that at this distance, they could afford to drive slowly and Lysandra would still make it to the palace on time, so he didn't suggest she walk the rest of the way.
"After all, you've only recently arrived in Necalis, haven't you?" Lysandra stood up slightly in her seat to get a better view of the palace and the square outside, filled with members of the Demon Clan.
With several roads blocked off, the traffic was exceptionally congested today. She would likely have been late for work had she taken her usual route; thankfully, she had chosen the sea path.
"Thankfully, Mr. Maccassi, you gave me a ride today." Lysandra remarked with a rare hint of resentment in her voice. In truth, she was displeased with the Vampire envoy's arrival. Why should they have to sacrifice half a day of sunlight for the convenience of the Vampires? This weak treaty made it seem like they had to grovel before the Vampires.
"I also think it's unreasonable to block off traffic like this, and it's even more unreasonable to waste the Magic World's tax revenue on an extremely expensive sky-veil barrier. The only thing that makes everyone happy is the chance to watch a Vampire show this morning." Lanchi leaned back in his seat, driving slowly as the pedestrians from the Demon Clan walked past the open-topped glass beside them.
"I heard that this Count Sergio is a top-notch detective among the Vampires. Many powerful figures in the Demon Clan are eager to witness his deduction process today." Lysandra agreed.
Although her views aligned with Maccassi's, and they both wanted to criticize the Vampires, her position did not allow her to openly insult them. For most of the Demon Clan members who had gathered early to watch the spectacle, this was a unique detective performance.
Of course, this was also related to Sergio's authority. He basically presented the conclusion and then worked backward to prove it.
Count Sergio could first use his authority to find out who the murderer was, but this couldn't be used as direct evidence since only he could see the culprit through his ability. What he needed to do was prove it.
Since the Vampires preferred the night, today's visit had probably started before she arrived for work. Now, Lysandra and Lanchi looked up at the giant screens on the tall buildings outside the window and saw the reception of the Vampire Count in front of the royal palace.
"The princess is calmer than I expected." Lysandra sighed.
She wondered if the princess was truly confident that the murderer wasn't from the Demon Clan or if she had a backup plan to deal with the Vampire detective. It wasn't just her thinking this way; the pedestrians walking past the open-topped car also whispered their speculations from time to time.
But Maccassi didn't respond to her. Lysandra turned her head to look and saw that Maccassi was staring at the giant screen, a faint smile on his face as he looked at Princess Hyperia.
"The princess is beautiful, isn't she?" Lysandra asked tentatively.
She rarely saw the princess in full dress, and she didn't expect Rock Lee McCarthy to be so captivated by her unintentionally.
The princess descended the shimmering palace steps, her exquisite features and extraordinary beauty complemented by her silver hair that flowed like a waterfall, gently covering her light blue dress. The skirt's hem fluttered lightly as she stepped down, one step at a time.
"Hmm." Lanchi hesitated for a moment before nodding in agreement.
"It's a pity that everyone only sees the princess's radiance at this moment and doesn't realize that she's the one truly being tested today." Lysandra lamented.
On this occasion, she didn't even have the qualifications to accompany the princess, and the only one following the princess was Kalliera, the Fallen Lord, for her protection.
"Rest assured, Princess Hyperion has great fortune. Maybe this Vampire Count's detective show will be over quickly, and the princess won't face any trouble." Lanchi smiled optimistically.
It was as if he felt that the matter would be resolved before it even began.
"I hope so..." Lysandra murmured to herself, her worries lingering.
Mr. Maccassi was taking things too lightly. How could there be such an easy solution as paying a vague price to instantly resolve a problem?
