Chapter 571: Are You Trying to Become the One Piece?
Chapter 571: Are You Trying to Become the One Piece?
The Transponder Snail's expression visibly darkened.
"You're going to break your promise?!" the Transponder Snail gritted his teeth.
"I already told you this violates the Old Man's principle. If there's nothing wrong, just hang up. What's a pirate and a Navy officer cheering together? You should focus on yourself and keep your position as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea."
With that, Kuro hung up on the Transponder Snail. He raised his hand and unleashed a wispslash toward the Grand Line.
Bang!
Vergo slapped his palm against the drifting stone platform beneath his feet. The momentum sent him veering sideways, dodging the slash that cleaved through the Grand Line near him.
His expression turned grim.
He'd made a mistake from the start.
This man was a Devil Fruit user. According to intelligence, he held absolute control rights over the Grand Line—rights even stronger than Kuzan's.
But staying here was impossible. He'd be captured, causing trouble for the Young Master.
Jumping into the sea? That would mean death.
Between death and hindering the Young Master, he had to choose.
Vergo pondered for a moment before redialing.
"Ah, Vergo, he didn't agree to my request. You know what to do, right? You can't get caught. Don't let them trace you back to me", the Transponder Snail's voice came through.
"I understand, Young Master. I know what to do."
Vergo nodded, his voice heavy. "I won't burden you."
The Transponder Snail fell into an unusual silence before murmuring, "These years... you've worked hard."
Vergo smiled, shook his head, and abruptly cut the call. Lifting his gaze, he fixed his eyes on Kuro in the sky.
Through his sunglasses, Kuro sensed that resolute stare and couldn't help asking, "Finished saying your goodbyes?"
Vergo tore off his plaid coat, revealing his lean, muscular physique. With Armored Haki enveloping him entirely, he became a pitch-black blur. Stepping on Moonstep, he shot straight toward Kuro like an arrow.
"Oh? A desperate last stand? How touching. What, Flamingo ordered you to die? How ruthless—this so-called pirate."
Kuro swung his blade, emitting a radiant slash that shot toward Vergo at lightning speed. Then, he prepared a second slash to the side.
He'd anticipated Vergo dodging the first strike, leaving him vulnerable to the second.
Bang!
Vergo neither dodged nor evaded. He let the blade strike his body. His left shoulder's Armored Haki dissipated, allowing the slash to sever his arm. Yet his torso surged forward.
If he'd kept his Armored Haki defense, the wispslash wouldn't have cut his arm. But the immense force would've sent him reeling backward—something Vergo refused to allow.
Though his arm was severed, the slash passed through his body, completely neutralizing its momentum.
Even Kuro was momentarily stunned.
Vergo charged forward, his right fist clenched. With a tiger's roar, he slammed his fist toward Kuro.
Clang!
Fist met blade, unleashing a shockwave.
"The Young Master is the one destined to become the One Piece!" Vergo roared.
Kuro resisted Vergo's punch, then swung his blade, sending a wispslash that hurled Vergo onto the drifting stone platform on the sea. The impact left a deep indentation.
"You stubborn bastard..."
Kuro bit his cigar, exhaling a plume of smoke. "You've got guts. Should I say that's just how pirates are?"
Vergo rose from the indentation, brushing himself off with one hand. He discarded his shattered sunglasses, his eyes blazing as he glared at Kuro.
"I've wanted to fight you for a long time."
Vergo declared, "You and the Young Master are the same. The only difference is you're hiding within the Navy. By the time you reach the Grand Line, no one will be able to stop you."
"You hid in the East Blue for ages. By the time you reached the Grand Line, you'd already seized power. Now you're trying to root yourself in the New World—and eliminate me. But you're wrong. Even if you win, even if Smoker controls G-5, he won't help you. That man will never help you become the One Piece!"
"???"
Kuro tilted his head. "Huh?"
"Don't deny it. I know you, Kuro. You and the Young Master share the same ambition. In this world, only the One Piece matters to you two! Admit it, Lucius Kro—you want to become the One Piece too!"
Kuro: "..."
Me?
The One Piece?
Since when did that nonsense have anything to do with me?!
"You're talking nonsense!"
Kuro slashed another wispslash.
Bang!
This time, the stone platform on the sea shattered into pieces.
Vergo leapt into the air, bouncing with Moonstep. "Feeling humiliated, are we? But since I dared to say it, I never expected to live. I just wanted to tell you—"
Boom!
A shockwave erupted from his feet, hurtling toward Kuro.
This time, he unleashed his full Haki, condensing it into a single punch.
"The Young Master is the one destined to become the One Piece!"
Hiss!
Autumn Water pierced his chest, cleaving him in two. Vergo's corpse split into halves, sinking into the Grand Line.
Kuro sheathed his blade with one hand, flicking the blood off the blade before returning it to its scabbard. He stared at the Grand Line for a moment before muttering,
"What nonsense!"
If you're resolved to die, fine, but don't slander my honor without cause.
Me, competing with that flaming bird for the One Piece?
Are you insulting me or your Young Master?
If I wanted to become the One Piece, would there even be room for Blackbeard's troubles? I'd already be one of the Four Emperors by now.
Why does your whole family think I'm scheming?
Why doesn't anyone else think that?!
Kuro exhaled another puff of smoke, gazed at the Grand Line again, and shook his head. "That last punch had some promise. Pity. Being a spy for so long ruined you."
That final punch's Haki purity had some merit.
Kuro had initially thought Vergo was just relying on full Armored Haki—good for scaring rookies but full of holes against veterans.
That's why Vergo got torn apart by Law later on.
Except for that last punch, his full Armored Haki was sloppy, lacking in purity.
Vergo wasn't a Devil Fruit user, so he had no special abilities. Even if he were, being sliced in half and sinking into the Grand Line meant no chance of survival.
Plus, Kuro could see his corpse floating on the sea's surface.
Confirming the man was dead, Kuro turned and flew back toward G-5.
G-5 wasn't in chaos, but there was some disorder.
Witnesses had seen Vergo and Kuro's fight. The Navy loyal to Vergo tried to follow, but Smoker restrained them.
His Logia "smoke" might not be deadly, but it was excellent for capturing people. Endless waves of white mist made escape difficult.
Though these men could use Haki, their meager amounts couldn't break free from Smoker's grasp.
Especially since Smoker had his own subordinates.
"You're done? That was quick", Smoker remarked, looking up as someone flew toward him from the sky.
Kuro: "..."
That sounded... weird.
