Chapter 570: Mr. Lanchi's Past in the Demon World
Chapter 570: Mr. Lanchi's Past in the Demon World
The next day, the sky above Nocalus, the Demon King's castle, remained a deep blue, with dawn approaching.
Around 5 o'clock in the morning, the sky outside began to change.
On the coast of Lisi Island, a small wooden cottage with ivy-covered walls that revealed a beige exterior among the lush greenery, Lysandra slowly sat up in bed, in a room behind the curtains.
"Yawn."
She rubbed her messy dark hair, her sleepy eyes a bit dazed.
When she checked the time, she was so startled that she tumbled out of bed and rushed to get ready, only remembering to tame her long hair after she had finished washing and dressing. It was then that she realized she could have slept in a bit later, as Mr. McKasy had promised to give her a ride to the royal palace yesterday.
However, not knowing if Mr. McKasy might be too busy to give her a ride, she had originally intended to get up early as usual, just in case.
Now she could only pray that Mr. McKasy would have some free time today.
After straightening her clothes, she picked up her bag and hurried out of the cottage.
In the sky, there were a few strangely shaped dark clouds, gently blown by the faint morning breeze.
Usually, at this time in July, the sky would already be turning blue, but today it seemed unusually dark.
Lysandra had been planning to ask her neighbor how to quickly find Mr. McKasy, but just as she locked the door, she saw an amber-colored magical vehicle parked outside her courtyard.
It was the same familiar face from yesterday, leaning back in the driver's seat, gazing at the starry night sky that had not yet completely faded.
Perhaps he was out to claim a portion of the local sky for himself, or perhaps he was gazing at the faint blue light emanating from the palace across the bay.
The moon, about to disappear, still illuminated the bushes, and the garden of the neighboring mansion was once again brightly lit, though it was only five or six in the morning, and the laughter and lively atmosphere of last night were long gone.
The luminous veins on McKasy's handsome face resembled flower petals, and his hair was smooth as if it had been trimmed weekly.
Lysandra couldn't detect any maliciousness in him. He just stared quietly across the sea.
Perhaps because he was a teetotaler, unlike the guests in the palace restaurant last night, the more they drank and laughed merrily, the more solemn he appeared.
Lysandra suddenly realized something.
Perhaps every morning, McKasy would stand below the palace, gazing at the aurora across the bay, as if trying to grasp something, and over there, he would find the inner peace that he sought.
Soon, McKasy sensed Lysandra's arrival.
Out of politeness, he stepped out of the vehicle and bowed to her.
Lysandra nodded hurriedly and walked briskly towards him.
"Um, sir, were you waiting for me?" Lysandra asked.
"Just arrived a moment ago. Quite a coincidence," Lanchi replied, turning his head, his hands in his pockets, a smile on his face.
Lysandra nodded and sat in the passenger seat, following the direction Lanchi indicated with his raised hand.
If it were a usual day, she would most likely be late, but today, with Mr. McKasy giving her a ride, she had plenty of time to spare.
She felt that he had probably been waiting for a long time, yet he still said he had just arrived.
"Will we be transferring to a sea magic device later?" Lysandra asked him again.
The streamlined magical vehicle they were now sitting in was amber-colored, as beautiful as the princess's eyes, with elegant, long lines. It was equipped with a hatbox, food box, and tool box, and the multi-layered windshield reflected the multi-colored lights of the street lamps, matching her imagination of a wealthy aristocrat.
"No need, it can drive directly on the sea," Lanchi replied contentedly.
He skillfully stepped on the accelerator, and the vehicle began to speed along the road towards the sea.
Once again, Lysandra felt the power of money.
She had originally thought that McKasy was a mysterious and legendary demon, but that impression was gradually fading, and now she tended to see him as a generous neighbor.
Mr. Lanchi was unique, but not in the way she had imagined.
However, riding with him this time made Lysandra increasingly aware of the awkwardness between them. She had agreed too hastily to let him give her a ride to work. In reality, their relationship had not progressed to such a stage yet. At best, they were merely newly acquainted demons. And here she was, relying on his help again, after he had already shown her such kindness. Now, being alone with him, she felt at a loss for words.
"Miss Lysandra, what do you think of me as a demon?" Lanchi took the initiative to break the silence in the car, perhaps noticing through his peripheral vision how Lysandra had unconsciously tightened her grip on her handbag.
"I think...you're a very nice demon, kinder than I imagined, and without the airs of a noble," Lysandra replied.
"I don't want you to misunderstand me because of those idle rumors. There may be a lot of gossip about me in Nocalus lately, but you should know that with each retelling, gossip changes a little, and by the end, it's barely related to the truth," Lanchi said, his hands on the steering wheel.
Lysandra nodded. Obviously, Mr. McKasy had also heard the various rumors being spread by the demons around his palace restaurant.
"Were you really a spy during the war?" Lysandra asked curiously.
"You could say that, but not in the way the rumors portray it," Lanchi admitted.
"Then...did you attend the Inferno Corridor Academy?" Lysandra asked, intrigued that McKasy had admitted to it.
These details might be of interest to the princess. After all, the princess had been a student at the Inferno Corridor Academy herself, although she had eventually dropped out and fled to the human realm.
"Of course, but...it's also not quite as the rumors say," Lanchi replied, glancing at Lysandra from time to time as he spoke.
This made it difficult for Lysandra to discern whether or not McKasy was lying. His hesitant demeanor suggested that he had secrets he couldn't reveal, but she could also sense that he held some sort of unusual, deep affection for that school.
"Which year were you? Who was the principal at the time?" Lysandra asked casually.
All she needed to do was confirm these details with the princess, and she would basically be able to verify the truth of McKasy's words.
"Er...that was twenty years ago..." Lanchi's voice trailed off, sounding uncharacteristically strained.
"..." Lysandra struggled to suppress her laughter.
His fabricated lies were so cliched that she couldn't bring herself to continue questioning him.
They then chatted about his rags-to-riches story of building his business from scratch, which was vastly different from what Lysandra had heard in the restaurant the night before. However, it was not difficult to discern that what Mr. McKasy was sharing was the original, unaltered version of the rumors. Without this original version, those rumors would never have come into existence.
But she also realized that Mr. McKasy had no intention of deceiving her. His words were always carefully chosen, and perhaps he was sharing these lighthearted topics to help her relax.
Communicating with Mr. McKasy was indeed a pleasant experience. He seemed to naturally take the feelings of those around him into consideration. Most girls would probably develop a crush on him very quickly.
However, Lysandra was well aware of her own limitations, and she could sense that McKasy's kindness towards her was purely platonic, regardless of her gender.
Of course, precisely because of McKasy's natural demeanor, if one day he truly fell for a girl and showered her with affectionate concern, that girl might, in turn, mistake his romantic gestures for mere friendship, adhering to the principle of not being overly self-conscious.
