Chapter 57: Why Is Your Cooking Making My Pokemon Breathe Fire?
Chapter 57: Why Is Your Cooking Making My Pokemon Breathe Fire?
Rick, a first-year student at Orange Academy, had chosen a Litten as his starter Pokemon, drawn to its Fire and Normal-type attributes. Eager to embark on his journey, he had left the confines of the school and ventured into the expansive Pasio region, a land ripe for training and exploration, with a goal to collect gym badges from various cities.
As fate would have it, his travels brought him to the quaint Shiver City, where he learned of an upcoming event known as the "Sakura Blossom Festival." Intrigued, he made a slight detour with his Litten to partake in the festivities.
After a lengthy walk, both trainer and Pokemon found themselves famished. Just then, a tantalizing aroma wafted through the air, capturing their attention.
Guided by their noses, they soon found themselves before a peculiar food stall.
The owner, a young man donning a brown cowboy jacket, stood out not just for his attire but also for the company he kept. He was surrounded by an assortment of unusual Pokemon.
By his sides were a Motostoke and an unfamiliar Pokemon, while a row of Galarian Meowth adorned the counter, with an Altaria and a Wigglytuff swaying gently behind them. And if that wasn't enough, a Haxorus lounged in the shade of a nearby tree, keeping a watchful eye on the proceedings.
As Rick approached, a Butterfree perched atop the stall lowered its head, seemingly curious about the potential customers.
"Wow, so many rare Pokemon!" Rick exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with awe and a hint of envy. He couldn't help but inquire, "Are all these yours?"
Naoki nodded with a smile, his pride evident. "Indeed they are."
Rick's expression softened as he thought of his own aspirations. He dreamed of one day amassing a diverse collection of rare and powerful Pokemon, and the sight before him only fueled that desire.
It was then that his Litten, snuggled comfortably in his arms, let out a loud growl, reminding him of their empty stomachs.
"Of course, my apologies. You must be hungry," Naoki said, his attention turning to the Litten. "Why don't you take a look and see what catches your fancy? For your Litten, I'd recommend the boiled beef slices. They're a favorite among Pokemon like yours!"
"Boiled beef slices..." Rick's eyes trailed to the price board, his mouth watering at the listed dishes. "Boiled beef slices for 800 League Dollars, tree fruit juice for 200, scrambled eggs with tomatoes for 500, and steamed eggs for 300. I'll take the boiled beef slices and the steamed eggs, please!"
"Coming right up!"
Naoki efficiently retrieved the pre-prepared dishes, which were conveniently packaged in portable boxes with disposable cutlery, making them ideal for travelers.
Rick paid promptly, and the exchange was made.
As soon as Rick lifted the lid, a burst of spicy aroma tickled his nostrils. His eyes widened as he beheld the glistening red-oil-coated beef slices.
He wasted no time in picking up a slice with his chopsticks and popping it into his mouth. The flavors exploded on his palate—a perfect blend of spicy, savory, and tender. Aside from a pleasant kick of heat, it was flawless.
"Wow!" Rick exclaimed, his eyes widening in delight. "This is amazing! Litten, you have to try this!"
Setting Litten down, the pair sat on the grassy knoll beside the stall, eagerly digging into their respective meals.
Alongside the boiled beef slices, Rick opened the steamed eggs, revealing a delicate, smooth texture that resembled frozen custard.
As he reached for a spoon to take a taste, Litten suddenly exhibited strange behavior. Its face reddened, its cheeks puffed, and then, without warning, it opened its mouth and unleashed a scorching stream of fire.
Caught off guard, Rick stared at Litten, then down at the remaining beef slices coated in red oil, and a wild thought crossed his mind. Could it have breathed fire because it was too spicy?
But the dish didn't seem that spicy when I ate it...
"Ah!" Rick exclaimed, stunned by the display. Bewildered, he hurried over to the stall and asked, "Mister, why is your food making my Pokemon breathe fire?"
Naoki replied, "It's because my dish contains a special secret ingredient that causes a big burst of Fire-type energy in Fire-attribute Pokemon like yours. But don't worry, it won't harm your Pokemon in any way."
Rick was still perplexed.
Just then, a small flame suddenly appeared on Little Lion's body.
The flame grew bigger, soon enveloping Little Lion's entire body.
After the initial shock, Little Lion seemed to sense the newfound power within itself. It let out an excited cry, aimed forward, and started running around the stall, picking up speed as it went.
"Wh-what's that?!" Rick exclaimed, his eyes wide with astonishment.
If he wasn't mistaken, that move was Ember!
"Looks like your Little Lion is quite lucky!" Naoki commented.
Rick turned to him, curious. "What do you mean?"
Naoki explained, half-jokingly, "It's an effect of this dish. The spiciness stimulates the Fire-type energy within your Pokemon."
"When their Fire-type energy reaches a saturated state, their brains enter a unique state, and in this state, they may sometimes comprehend new Fire-type moves."
Rick found this explanation too complex and didn't quite understand.
Naoki elaborated, "It's similar to how some trainers have their Pokemon train in whirlpools to grasp Water-type moves like Whirlpool. The abundant Water-type energy in such environments facilitates their understanding."
Now Rick understood, and his expression turned to one of shock. "So, this dish can help Pokemon train?! How did you do it?!" he asked, his voice filled with excitement.
Naoki laughed. "It's a secret family recipe, not to be shared! If you want more, come back next year at this time to buy some!"
Having hit a dead end with his inquiries, Rick's attention turned back to the remaining food.
He reached into his pocket and asked, "Mister, can I buy a few more servings to go?"
"No, I'm sorry. A maximum of two servings per customer," Naoki replied, shaking his head.
"Alright," Rick said, realizing that he could still buy one more serving.
Without hesitation, he pulled out his money and purchased the second serving.
"Mister, will your other dishes also help my Little Lion train?" he asked, hopeful.
"Unfortunately, no. These are just regular dishes," Naoki answered.
"Oh... alright," Rick said, sounding a bit disappointed. He secretly made up his mind to return the following year.
Just as he turned to leave, something occurred to him.
Wait! Weren't all the vendors here supposed to be local farmers? How come this man knows so much about the intricacies of Pokemon training?
Who exactly is this stall owner?
Rick voiced his thoughts out loud.
Naoki shrugged helplessly. "As you can see, I'm just an ordinary farmer running a ranch nearby."
Just then, another customer was drawn in by the enticing aroma—a girl with a Scatterbug.
She approached the stall, glanced at the menu, and placed her order. "Mister, I'd like two cups of tree fruit juice and two bowls of steamed eggs, please!"
