Chapter 569: Stay Put, You Two
Chapter 569: Stay Put, You Two
Kuro's Killing Intent froze the G-5 Navy in place.
Kuro swept them with a glance. "When I return from my office, I expect to see you all presentable."
The G-5 Navy lowered their heads, silent.
"Understood?" Kuro pressed, his Killing Intent intensifying.
The G-5 soldiers collectively shuddered, then barked in unison, "Yes!"
Kuro nodded, then continued forward.
"Hey, if you keep acting like this, how do you expect me to lead later?" Smoker walked beside him, his cigar clenched between his teeth with mild irritation.
Kuro chuckled. "You don't care about that anyway. Besides, as supervision, I must fulfill my duties."
"Whatever."
Smoker exhaled a puff of smoke, leading his group toward his office.
Inside, Smoker signaled Tashigi to shut the door tightly before pulling a stack of documents from his desk and handing them over. "Take a look."
Klah stepped forward, accepting the documents and scanning them.
"Did you hear about the recent Grand Line maritime disaster near G-5's sea area?" Smoker asked.
"You mentioned it before", Kuro replied, leaning casually against a sofa. "You also praised your subordinates."
"Right, that maritime disaster", Smoker continued. "My unruly subordinates investigated it. But that wasn't a natural disaster—it was man-made. It caused massive child casualties in the area. One of my subordinates who followed Commodore on a mission reported seeing ships kidnapping children. Yet the official report claimed it was a maritime disaster. Something's off—G-5 is hiding something."
"Commodore? Which one?" Kuro asked, puzzled.
"Commodore Vergo, the Base Commander's subordinate."
Smoker's voice deepened. "Vergo is the only G-5 officer with gentlemanly conduct unlike the rest. Respected by the G-5 Navy, he's an old-timer—fifteen years in service. He's practically my 'senior brother.' I used to respect him, but after reviewing his reports, they all just say 'maritime disaster.' I don't get it. That's why I kept digging."
"There's definitely something wrong", Klah interjected, adjusting his glasses. "Kuro, Vice Admiral Vergo has issues. From these documents, this isn't the first time he's reported a 'maritime disaster.' Especially recently, after Vice Admiral Smoker arrived, the described Navy deployment areas in the reports have expanded significantly. It seems like he's deliberately hiding something from Smoker."
"Also", Klah continued, "the documents show Vergo frequently departs with heavily armed ships, but returns unarmed. Regardless, he deserves investigation."
"Right", Smoker added, biting his cigar grimly. "I assigned a special subordinate to investigate. He reported visiting Dressrosa. Could Vergo be secretly dealing with Donquixote Doflamingo?"
"Navy collaborating with pirates", Smoker spat. "Unbelievable."
Klah suggested, "Kuro, I recommend discreet investigation. As a Vice Admiral, direct confrontation might destabilize the Navy itself."
Before he finished, Kuro waved his hand, suddenly realizing. "Ah! Dressrosa!"
He remembered now—Vergo, covered in Armored Haki. He'd once considered him a nuisance. His true identity... was that of a spy?
"No need for complications."
Kuro stood, crimson light flickering in his eyes. "He's here. Let's pay him a visit."
"Kuro, what are you planning?" Smoker frowned. "Even you can't just act without evidence. Report to Headquarters first—this is a Vice Admiral we're talking about!"
"Suspicions demand answers", Kuro replied. "Don't worry, I'm an expert at convincing people. He'll confess eventually."
Turning to the group, Kuro said, "Stay put, you two. I'm just going to buy some snacks—no, wait, I mean question the suspect. Back in a moment."
With that, he strode out of the office, following his Observation Haki toward the strongest aura in G-5.
Vergo—G-5's strongest.
Compared to him, Smoker was outmatched.
Kuro recalled: decades ago, even before joining the Navy, Vergo had already mastered Full-Body Armored Haki. They were roughly the same age. Smoker must've wasted his potential in the East Blue.
Following the aura, Kuro headed straight to the fortress's top floor, where a solitary office awaited.
Cigar in mouth, Kuro approached the door. Pausing briefly, he suddenly kicked it open with a thunderous crash.
The doors flew inward, their momentum carving deep grooves in the floor as they slammed into the desk, sending it skidding backward.
A hand slammed down on the desk.
A man sat there—sunglasses perched on his nose, wearing a white pinstripe coat, a beef patty stuck to his face, his expression stern and unsmiling.
"Vergo?" Kuro swaggered in, exhaling smoke. "You're under arrest. Surrender and come with me to Headquarters."
Vergo glanced at him, unimpressed. "Lucius Kro? No—Golden Lion, Vice Admiral. Rude to barge in, then claim the Base Commander arrested you? Disrespectful. Even with your reputation, shouldn't you respect your seniors?"
"Seniors?" Kuro laughed. "I don't consider traitors my seniors, pirate."
Bang!
Before his words faded, Vergo drew a pistol, firing a shot.
Kuro didn't even look. He tilted his body slightly, letting the bullet whiz past and embed in the doorframe.
"Seastone bullets?" Kuro sneered. "You think this will stop me? Am I some rookie dependent on Devil Fruit powers?"
Bang!
At that moment, Vergo shattered the wall, escaping through the hole, his Moonstep carrying him rapidly into the distance.
"Lion Bite!"
Kuro unsheathed his blade instantly, slashing forward. Deng Shi! The area around Vergo twisted, countless delicate wind blades slicing through the air, shredding Vergo's clothes.
Vergo's body darkened with Armored Haki, forcing his way through the howling winds tearing at his shirt, desperately fleeing.
Suddenly, a wisp of Black Radiance appeared above him.
Vergo spun, crossing his arms to block the attack. The explosion sent his body crashing down like a cannonball, creating a crater in the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust and smoke.
"Come now", Kuro floated above, Autumn Water in hand, peering down. "Let's talk, Vergo. Tell me—what have you been up to all these years?"
