Chapter 569: No Mercy, Just the Dominance of the Victorious Over the Defeated
Chapter 569: No Mercy, Just the Dominance of the Victorious Over the Defeated
"That's very difficult, ma'am!" Dobby squeaked, shaking his head. Then, with a proud air, he continued, "Only great Wizards like Lord Hals are willing to pay us!"
"That's not necessarily true, Dobby! I believe that if we speak up, more people will come to agree with this idea!" Hermione said firmly. She felt that the current mistreatment of House-Elves by Wizards was a result of outdated feudal remnants.
Then, the young witch curiously asked Dobby how much salary he received each month and how many days of holiday he had.
Dobby was eager to answer to highlight his master's greatness, but as he opened his mouth, he remembered Ivan's command not to reveal the details of his pay to anyone else. His ears drooped, and he mumbled, "Lord Hals gives Dobby lots and lots of money and holiday days. Sir is such a noble person!"
"Alright, stop praising me and get going!" Ivan quickly waved Dobby away, fearing that Hermione might ask more questions and expose the truth.
Hermione gave Ivan a suspicious look but didn't say anything. In her view, if Dobby was so grateful, Ivan must be paying him a decent salary, perhaps just a bit less than what other Wizards paid.
"Why did you suddenly decide to advocate for the liberation of House-Elves, Hermione?" Ivan asked curiously, as he had always been puzzled by her stance.
"Why not?"
The young witch looked at Ivan seriously and continued, "House-Elves do so much for their masters. They handle all the household chores and must remain absolutely loyal, obeying every command. But what do they get in return?"
"Nothing but discrimination and arbitrary abuse! I've even read in a book that during the Dark Lord's peak, some Wizards treated House-Elves like pests!"
At this point, the young witch was furious. She had interacted with Kreacher and Winky and had learned about their lives.
In her opinion, House-Elves were a diligent and loyal group that could be wonderful companions for Wizards, not just slaves to be mistreated!
Listening to Hermione's passionate words, Ivan remained unperturbed. He spoke calmly, "Since you've read the book, you should know the origins of House-Elves. They are creatures created by Wizards to serve them for generations. This is the purpose of their existence."
"Do you really believe that? Wizards created House-Elves? They are so similar to Goblins!" Hermione countered, pausing for a moment before adding, "Perhaps some Wizards altered history to keep House-Elves in servitude forever!"
"Besides, they are beings of wisdom, capable of thought. They shouldn't be treated this way!" Hermione concluded.
Ivan looked at Hermione with surprise. He hadn't expected the young witch to question the content of the books.
"What's wrong? Did I say something incorrect?" Hermione asked, feeling a bit uncomfortable when Ivan didn't respond. She nervously poked at the cake on her plate, scattering frosting on the table.
"No, nothing's wrong. I'm just surprised that you could think of that!" Ivan smiled.
He had read *Origins of Bloodlines* and knew the truth. House-Elves were not created by Wizards but were a type of magical creature that had been enslaved by Wizards during their dominance of the Wizarding World.
After all, **Wizards** aren't powerful enough to create a race of **Magical Creatures** with human-like **wisdom** and innate **casting** abilities.
That would be in the realm of the divine!
Ivan believed that this was perhaps the reason why **Wizards** were so cautious about **House-Elves** and had spent centuries cultivating their servitude.
However, Ivan didn't see anything wrong with the practices of his **Wizards** predecessors.
Back then, the situation was different. **Wizards** didn't fare well in the **Wizarding World**; they had to fight hard to gain the influence they now wield.
All **Magical Creatures** in the **Wizarding World**, including **Centaur**, **Goblin**, and **Mermaid**, had to submit to the rule of **Wizards**, and of course, that included **House-Elves**!
This was the dominion of the ultimate victors over the defeated in the brutal struggle for survival, much like how ancient human ancestors drove away lions and tigers and domesticated cattle and sheep. The only difference was that **House-Elves** possessed high intelligence, making their subjugation even more cruel!
Not that there weren't issues.
Outside of **Hogwarts**, most **House-Elves** were monopolized by **Pureblood Families** and became their private property. **Muggle-born Wizards** had no access to such convenience.
**House-Elves** also didn't fully utilize their potential. Their **casting** abilities were severely restricted, and the arrogance of **Pureblood Wizards** led to a decreasing population of **House-Elves**.
Despite his thoughts, Ivan found it difficult to know how to persuade Hermione when the time came.
Should he tell her that the world was harsh and that the survival of the fittest was the law of nature? That if **House-Elves** were fully liberated, they would compete with **Wizards** for power?
Hermione would never understand that!
Ivan knew all too well that teenagers around her age were brimming with sympathy and a strong sense of justice. They often believed that they could correct the world's injustices with their own efforts, without experiencing the harsh realities of life.
Just like when he was in elementary school in his previous life, he had become overly confident after a few environmental classes and dared to scold a logger, "Trees are so important, why are you cutting them down?"
Thinking back, it was fortunate he didn't get beaten up.
Hermione, unaware of Ivan's thoughts, assumed he agreed with her and happily shared her plans.
"I'm going to establish a **House-Elf Rights Promotion Society** and start by convincing Professor Dumbledore to improve the treatment of **House-Elves** at **Hogwarts**!" Hermione said.
"I don't think you should do that. Professor Dumbledore won't agree," Ivan said, feeling a headache coming on.
"Why not?" Hermione asked, eager for an answer.
"**Hogwarts** has over a hundred **House-Elves**. Even if we paid them the minimum wage, it would be a significant monthly expense. Even if Professor Dumbledore isn't prejudiced against **House-Elves**, the board of governors wouldn't approve the funding," Ivan explained.
If they were paid the same as Filch, **Hogwarts** would have to spend an additional seventy to eighty thousand **Galleons** each year!
As the headmaster, Dumbledore was over a hundred years old and in poor health. He wouldn't be able to handle such a shock!
