Chapter 569: Dragon Arrival City
Chapter 569: Dragon Arrival City
Soon, the dice came to a stop.
Seeing the number facing up, Su Yu and Chenxing's hearts sank.
The number was a one!
That meant if he went to the Renkter National Library now, he would most likely never return.
"Su Yu, I think we should go somewhere else," Chenxing said, reaching out a paw to gently stroke his neck.
"Alright, let's go somewhere else," Su Yu agreed. He wasn't stubborn enough to risk his life unnecessarily.
However, he added, "When the dice roll is four or higher, we'll go to the Renkter National Library."
Six hours later, Su Yu arrived in Dragon Arrival City on the eastern coast of the Sun Empire.
To the east of Dragon Arrival City lay an endless expanse of sea, beyond which was the famous Dragon Island.
Dragon Island, or simply Dragon Isle, covers an area of 100,000 square kilometers, roughly the size of three Hainan Islands combined. It is the homeland of the dragons in the Skrul world.
Approximately 20,000 dragons live on Dragon Isle, including the spell-casting Blue Dragons, the physically formidable Black Dragons, the flame-wielding Red Dragons, the mind-bending White Dragons, and the healing and dream-crafting Green Dragons.
The dragons are incredibly powerful.
Even mature dragons who don't actively train possess at least Fourth Rank strength, with Fifth and Sixth Rank dragons as common as fish in a river.
The Dragon King, "Kadrigus," is one of the fifteen most powerful deities on Skrul!
According to legend, during the ancient times hundreds of thousands of years ago, the dragons ruled the entire world. However, for unknown reasons, their birth rate plummeted and their growth cycles extended, leaving only 20,000 dragons surviving on this small island.
Dragon Isle is very close to the Sun Empire, with the nearest point only about 50 to 60 kilometers away. High-ranking dragons can cross the strait with a single dive.
Because of this, the greatest dream of Sun Empire children is to form a bond with a dragon when they turn 18.
The dragons do not reject forming partnerships with Skruls.
Every year, a group of juvenile dragons crosses the strait to the mainland to form bonds with talented or wealthy young people from the Sun Empire.
The Sun Empire's royal family is a major player in these dragon partnerships. Both of Emperor Manina XIII's sons formed dragon bonds when they turned 18, and the relationship between the two parties is very harmonious.
It was also 7 AM in Dragon Arrival City when Su Yu arrived.
The scene before him was immediately breathtaking.
Leaving the airport and walking down the streets, he found himself in a sea of people, the city's roads packed solid.
The sky above was filled with floating cars, packed like skewers, blocking out the sun.
To put it bluntly, if Su Yu were to cast a large-scale attack spell right now, he could easily kill tens of thousands of Skruls.
Chenxing was also startled by the spectacle and telepathically asked Su Yu, "Kryptonite, what are they doing?"
"Probably the Dragon Arrival Ceremony is about to start, and they're here to watch," Su Yu explained.
"The Dragon Arrival Ceremony? What's that?" Chenxing's small head was filled with big questions.
Su Yu gently ruffled her little head and smiled. "The Dragon Arrival Ceremony is the ritual where Skruls form bonds with dragons. Any Skrul citizen who turns 18 can participate.
"The children of the elite are in the inner field, while the commoners' children wait in the outer field.
"The juvenile dragons first choose from the inner field, then move to the outer field. If they don't find a suitable partner, they may choose not to bond at all."
Every year, two or three children from common families are chosen by dragons to become their partners, stepping into the upper echelons of society with a single bound.
To put it simply, for commoners, it's a bit like winning the lottery in our world," Morningstar explained.
"Oh, I see. So we're quite lucky to be here at the right time," Morningstar nodded.
At the same time, she quickly jumped from Su Yu's left shoulder to his right, avoiding the hand of Scrul Lady, who found her adorable and wanted to pet her.
"Kesing, should we go see the ceremony?" Morningstar suddenly suggested. "If we miss this chance, we won't get another one."
"About that..." Su Yu originally had no plans to attend the ceremony.
He intended to sneak into Dragon Island, find a way to befriend the dragons around it, and then gradually make his way into the core area of the island.
But since Morningstar wanted to see the ceremony, he figured it wouldn't take too much time.
Besides, humans in Su Yu's previous life didn't have much knowledge about dragons, so it would be a good opportunity to learn more about their habits and behaviors.
With that thought, he agreed and led Morningstar toward the ceremony's location—the Dragon Arrival Square.
...
Dragon Arrival Square was built by the sea, facing Dragon Island directly.
At the eastern end of the square stood a large circular platform covering 6,666 square meters, where over three hundred young Scrul adults who had just come of age were standing.
This platform was referred to by the Scrul as the "Inner Field," and only the children of noble families had the privilege to stand there.
Outside the Inner Field was the Outer Field.
At least six hundred thousand eighteen-year-old Scrul youths stood in the Outer Field, hoping for a stroke of luck.
Dragon Arrival Square was a vast area, but even so, it was packed with people.
Fortunately, not all eighteen-year-olds from across the nation came here; otherwise, with the total population of the Sun Empire being five hundred million, even if the square were ten times larger, it still wouldn't be enough.
Outside the square were the spectator stands.
Most of the spectators were the parents of the youths in the square, while others were tourists there to watch the spectacle. Many of them had set up telescopes to catch a glimpse of the majestic dragons.
Dragon Arrival Square not only had a class distinction between the Inner and Outer Fields but also within the Inner Field itself.
At the very center of the Inner Field stood eight young nobles from the royal family, who were arrogantly chatting and laughing with those around them.
Surrounding them were the children of high-ranking officials, ministers, and generals, who had a slightly less imposing presence.
One of the royal family members glanced at the sky and said, "The dragons should be arriving soon, right?"
"Yeah, they should be here soon," a sycophantic voice responded. "According to the schedule, the young dragons should have arrived half an hour ago, but we haven't seen any yet."
"How many of us do you think will be chosen by the dragons this year?"
"The quality and quantity are similar to previous years. In the past, about 20 to 30 from the Inner Field and 2 to 3 from the Outer Field were chosen. This year should be about the same."
"But this year, Prince Charles is here, and he will definitely be chosen! For the rest of us, it's not so certain. We can only hope for good luck."
"Yeah, I hope Lady Luck smiles upon me!"
"May the most noble young dragon favor Prince Charles!"
