Chapter 568: The Deep
Chapter 568: The Deep
Inside the vehicle, Pan Sir felt restless.
He didn't want to take this route, not only because the environment here made him feel uncomfortable, but also because the Plague Cult had a bad reputation even in the lower city. Usually, no one dared to come close to this place.
However, he had no choice. If he didn't point out a feasible path today, he might not be able to get out of the car.
As the vehicle moved forward, he also felt a deep sense of discomfort. Not only was the light dim here, but apart from the sound of the vehicle itself, there was an eerie silence outside.
The dark tunnel ahead seemed to plunge one into an endless void, making it oppressively deep.
Che Gao Yi narrowed his eyes; they had been driving here for over half an hour, yet they still hadn't found an exit. Moreover, he noticed a peculiar situation: the graffiti on the walls seemed to repeat.
The memory of the Third Limit Fighter was usually excellent, and he had an even better eye for details. Even with just a glance, he had memorized all the patterns he had seen earlier.
They weren't heading towards their destination; instead, they were going in circles!
After realizing this, he immediately spoke to Interdimensional Link, "Stop the cars!"
The entire convoy came to an immediate halt.
"All vehicles, report and inspect your conditions," he ordered.
Each armored vehicle reported to him, but soon they discovered that one vehicle was mysteriously missing, and they had communicated with it just five minutes ago.
Pan Sir felt increasingly uneasy. Rumors about the Plague Cult kept flashing through his mind. "Mr. Che, this... this..."
Che Gao Yi replied coldly, "No need to panic."
Although a vehicle had gone missing, no one had attacked them along the way, which meant that whoever was hiding in the shadows either didn't want a direct confrontation or didn't have the capability to do so.
He instructed Interdimensional Link, "All vehicles, maintain contact every two minutes. Now, follow my command and retreat."
He turned his vehicle around and led the way. At this moment, his mind vividly recalled every detail of the route they had taken, including the patterns on the walls and the various traces on the ground.
He didn't need to look for the specific path; he simply led the convoy back the way they came, following those traces.
At this moment, his observation skills were as sharp as if he had an active consciousness.
After more than half an hour, they successfully retreated to the tunnel entrance where they had initially entered.
"We're out," Pan Sir said, looking at the familiar light of the Sun Vine outside. His tense mood relaxed, and he breathed heavily in his seat.
However, after another inspection, they discovered that yet another vehicle was missing.
Everyone was shocked. They had all communicated with each other just moments ago when they exited. How did another vehicle disappear? They weren't afraid of a direct fight, but this situation, which defied common sense, made their scalps tingle.
Che Gao Yi was the only one in the convoy who remained calm. He didn't intend to search for the two missing vehicles because the split bodies they were transporting weren't inside them. He couldn't afford to stop for those vehicles and their occupants.
Pan Sir cautiously looked at him, "Mr. Che, what should we do now?" Both paths were blocked, and he didn't know what to do next. He was afraid that the other party might take out their anger on him.
Che Gao Yi made a decisive decision, "Let's go back to the previous road and break through from there."
Although charging through the Handling Bureau's checkpoint wasn't a good idea, it was the only way out for them at the moment. It was better than facing unknown and mysterious situations.
At his command, the convoy restarted. As they left, he took one last look at the deep and seemingly endless tunnel behind them.
In the Victory Zone, at the square where the rift had disappeared, Chen Chuan put on a protective coverall and sat inside the armored vehicle, drinking a hot beverage provided by the Response Team.
He glanced at his palm, where Chen Bitong had transmitted a spiritual force, along with some information. However, he needed to raise his spiritual perception a bit more to see it clearly.
But it wouldn't take long.
He felt that he was just a step away from deciphering the information, just a tiny step. And the day was still young; he had time.
Even if it wasn't for this, but for the pure substance that would come later, he had to push his spiritual perception to have a chance to obtain more.
After finishing the hot drink and resting for a while, there was a sound from Interdimensional Link. He took a look and connected to it.
"Specialist?"
Specialist Liang's voice came through, "Captain Chen, I know you must be tired after handling matters here, but I have to trouble you again. You are the most suitable person for this task."
"Please tell me, Specialist Liang," Chen Chuan said.
Specialist Liang said, "Several split bodies have been lost outside. We suspect that the Union Victory Company has accepted the transportation service for the split bodies. Their convoy is currently heading towards the underground city.
"An hour ago, our hidden checkpoint at a secret exit detected someone trying to pass through, suspected to be from the Union Victory Company. Although there has been no news since then, they should be searching for other exits."
The situation in the lower city was complex and intricate. It was difficult for their personnel to infiltrate the area, and they lacked the necessary trust. They were aware that Fusion Boundary Company had established an underground logistics team there, and Chen Chuan, who still held the position of Security Supervisor at Fusion Boundary, would have an easier time operating in that region.
"We hope you can go there and intercept the Lian Wei Zhong Yu convoy," they said, relying on Chen Chuan's connections.
Chen Chuan contemplated for a moment and asked, "To what extent am I authorized by the Defense Department?"
Specialist Liang's voice turned solemn. "I am authorizing you on behalf of both the Defense Department and the Government Hall. You are permitted to use all available means regarding any matters related to the Split Body. During this time, whether it's communication or team coordination, everything can be arranged according to your requirements."
"I have only one request," Specialist Liang continued. "Intercept this convoy to the best of your ability. If you find the Split Body, confirm and destroy it on the spot."
"Specialist, I understand," Chen Chuan replied. "I'll take care of it."
Specialist Liang said, "Captain Chen, I've already dispatched a dedicated convoy to pick you up. The lower city is no ordinary place, so be cautious."
Chen Chuan thanked him and ended the call.
After sitting for a while longer, Chen Chuan heard an armed convoy approaching from a distance. He got out of his vehicle and stood in the middle of the road.
The convoy stopped a short distance ahead, and the temporary leader inside efficiently exited the vehicle with his team, saluted Chen Chuan, and then stepped aside.
A security officer presented a brand-new set of Executive Captain's attire, including a newly fitted ceremonial sword.
Chen Chuan quickly checked the uniform, ensuring it was the correct version.
Without hesitation, Chen Chuan put on the uniform and then the protective coveralls. He tightened the protective gloves and surveyed his surroundings before boarding the armed vehicle.
The convoy swiftly turned around and drove out, attracting the attention of the emergency response team.
Occasionally, flickering rifts could still be seen on the road, even though some had already disappeared. As long as the splitting period had not ended, more rifts would continue to appear.
Fortunately, these rifts also appeared above the Spider Mother's body, preventing any further chaos in the lower city compared to the upper city.
Chen Chuan borrowed the frequency band provided by the Defense Department and contacted Fusion Boundary Company. Through the company's dedicated channel, he found Lan Shen Nan and learned much from her. They agreed to meet at a designated location.
After a few minutes, the convoy entered the lower city through the nearest tunnel entrance.
Following Chen Chuan's instructions, they located the nearby Roadthrough Logistics base.
Initially, the base personnel were hostile and wary, but Chen Chuan's identity as the Fusion Boundary Security Supervisor quickly eased the tension. They even dispatched a guide to assist them.
Half an hour later, the convoy reached another tunnel.
Lan Shen Nan was waiting there, riding a two-wheeled motor vehicle, accompanied by over thirty armed vehicle operators.
The vehicle stopped in front of Chen Chuan's car, and Lan Shen Nan lowered the window. Chen Chuan, wearing a protective cloak and a gilded helmet, sat inside. She felt a sense of unease compared to their first encounter.
Lan Shen Nan composed herself and said seriously, "Mr. Chen. We received a message from the company, instructing us to cooperate with you fully.
However, this convoy's underground movement will attract suspicion and hostility from various parties, which may hinder your actions and significantly impact Roadthrough Logistics."
Chen Chuan acknowledged, "Captain Lan, I understand your concerns. This time, you only need to be accountable to me. I won't involve Roadthrough Logistics."
He instructed, "Leave the vehicles carrying Field Creatures and Information Interference Equipment, and everyone else should evacuate."
The convoy's armed personnel followed Chen Chuan's instructions without hesitation, as they had been instructed to obey his commands. They left only the equipment-carrying vehicles behind and immediately departed.
Chen Chuan asked, "Captain Lan, can your people handle this equipment?"
"Yes, they can," Lan Shen Nan replied.
She instructed her team to move the motor vehicle aside and receive the equipment. Lan Shen Nan herself entered Chen Chuan's vehicle. Feeling less tense than before, she said, "Little Brother Chen, are you looking for the Lian Wei Zhong Yu convoy?"
Chen Chuan nodded, "Yes, they are carrying a very important item. They plan to transport it out of the city, can you help us?"
Lan Shen Nan assured him, "Their movements are too conspicuous. We've been monitoring them, and we can probably guess their destination."
Chen Chuan nodded, "Then, Captain Lan, please lead us there now."
