Chapter 567: A Navy Like Pirates
Chapter 567: A Navy Like Pirates
When Lida arrived at the port, Klah was already with them.
Klah carried several paper bags, while Lida held one, casually munching on a piece of bread from it. The bread looked soft and fluffy, faintly steaming with a fresh aroma, as if it had just been baked.
"Hey, Lida, where’d you go?"
Kuro waited at the port, watching Lida approach. He couldn’t help but ask.
"Shopping, of course! Kuro, you gotta try this—it’s amazing. Want one?" Lida waved a bread in his direction.
"Shopping? This fresh? Come on, how long did you actually take? Did you even deliver my message?" Kuro asked skeptically.
Lida instinctively glanced sideways. "Of course I did! Everything’s been passed along!"
"Really?" Kuro frowned, eyeing her. "Are you sure?"
"Absolutely!" Lida yelped, her voice tinged with guilt. "Would I ever lie to you, Kuro? You should trust me the most, right? I’m your first subordinate!"
Kuro stared at her for a moment. "Fine. Let’s board. We’re heading to G-5 for a vacation—no, wait, for a mission."
Lida had never really betrayed him before. After all, she was his first subordinate, practically raised like a daughter. He rarely gave her tasks, so when he finally did, he expected her to handle it properly.
This was Kuro’s last resort. When every blade on his back was an option, choosing the sharpest—and most dangerous—was inevitable. The sharpest blade, Kas, was also the most likely to backfire. No, not just likely—it was almost guaranteed to stab him in the back. Just having it around made Kuro’s scalp prickle with dread.
Klah was decent enough, but still carried a high risk of betrayal. As for Ju Geng? A deaf cook. Kuro rarely relied on her for anything else—she couldn’t hear anyway.
Sazil? Useless.
Fen Ni was a scatterbrained side effect serum expert. What could he expect from her? The Navy was doomed if she was involved.
Donald? What a joke.
The only reliable one was Wilbur. Whatever orders he received, he executed flawlessly, without accidents.
Then there was Lida. Sure, she had her moments, but nothing serious. As long as she wasn’t used long-term, she wouldn’t stab him in the back. Not for a simple task like this. Kuro was confident.
After all, how much trouble could she cause just passing a message? Even if she told Ju Geng, Ju Geng could still hear it and relay it properly.
The three boarded the warship, heading toward the G-5 Branch.
The G-5 Branch, stationed in the New World alongside G-1 and G-3, wasn’t as mighty as the upgraded G-1 Headquarters, nor did it have G-3’s reputation as a Navy hero. But G-5’s infamy was legendary.
To put it simply, its Navy acted more like pirates.
They avoided outright illegal acts, but every other despicable trick was fair game. Cheating, swindling, and fighting were their specialties. Encountering pirates was like a gang war—black eating black.
Yet their combat power was undeniable.
As one of the earliest Headquarters stationed in the New World, every Navy member who survived there, no matter how dirty, was an elite.
"Ugh, Kuro, why does it suddenly feel so hot?" Lida panted, sticking out her tongue and fanning herself.
"The New World’s weather is unpredictable, more intense than the Grand Line. Normal", Kuro replied, lounging on a deck chair in sunglasses, shirtless, sunbathing.
"No way! It’s a bewildering kind of hot! Too hot!"
Lida fanned herself furiously, glancing around. Her eyes widened as she pointed. "Ah! It’s that!"
Kuro turned to look. In the distance, an island split evenly between ice and fire emerged on the horizon. One half was a frozen wasteland, the other a blazing lava field, each territory sharply divided, never mixing.
"Oh, the Vegapunk Hazard. We’re almost at G-5", Kuro mused.
The Vegapunk Hazard—where Sakazuki and Kuzanduel clashed. They were sailing near the lava side, explaining Lida’s discomfort.
"Adjust course. Keep distance from the Vegapunk Hazard", Kuro ordered a nearby Navy officer.
"Aye, Vice Admiral!"
The officer saluted, rushed off, and soon the warship veered away from the Hazard.
The G-5 Branch lay just ahead, near the Hazard.
The World Government controlled little territory in the New World, so G-5’s base was compact.
After four days of sailing, the warship reached the G-5 Branch from the Hazard.
"Kuro-sama", Klah murmured, adjusting his glasses as he stared at the heavily fortified fortress ahead.
Kuro, now in his golden admiral uniform, hooded cloak billowing in the wind, glanced forward and frowned. "Looks like Smoker’s leadership isn’t enough."
At the port, a group awaited them.
Leading them was Smoker and Tashigi.
Only they wore traditional Navy uniforms and hooded cloaks.
Beside them stood a crowd of menacing figures.
Their attire resembled pirates more than Navy officers. Some wore haphazard cloaks with a "5" insignia, others sported hats or mismatched Navy symbols.
They stared at the warship, grinning maliciously. If not for Smoker’s presence, Kuro would’ve annihilated them on sight.
They looked less like Navy and more like pirates plotting to hijack the warship.
"Is this G-5? Legendary indeed", Klah remarked.
Using his Observation Haki, he sensed the power in each Navy officer. None were weak.
"Here we go", Smoker muttered, cigar clenched in his teeth, watching the warship approach. "Headquarters actually sent this bastard Kuro."
"Hey, Vice Admiral Smoker! Is that the Golden Lion everyone talks about? Doesn’t look special!"
"Hah! Maybe he’ll wet his pants when he steps off!"
"G-5’s ours! Why send an outsider to supervise us?!"
The G-5 Navy stood defiant.
Headquarters had sent Kuro under the guise of "supervision."
No specifics, just supervision.
Yet that single word ignited fury across G-5.
They feared no one, having slaughtered ferocious pirates in the New World. Why need supervision?
What kind of supervision could matter here?!
