Chapter 563: The Megaphone
Chapter 563: The Megaphone
Wenwan knew deep down that even if she tried to check her scores, she wouldn't find them.
How could she?
Those people would never let her check, and they might even destroy the test papers.
Resentment and anger filled her mind. In that moment, she wished she could take down Jiang Xia, the woman who had ruined her future, along with herself.
Behind her, Zhou Guohua saw Wenwan pedaling her bicycle at breakneck speed and sped up to catch up.
Jiang Xia and Zhou Chenglei had discussed how He Xiu Hui had almost signed the papers.
Zhou Chenglei glanced at the sleeping child in Jiang Xia's arms. "A day or two won't matter."
The market in Zhen Shang was held on the 2nd, 5th, and 8th of every month. The next market day was the 18th, the day after tomorrow.
"Right."
Zhou Chenglei asked, "How were the kids today?"
"Very well-behaved! As long as Xiaobao doesn't cry to go out, the older and younger brothers are usually quite good. The older one is the best; he played in the stroller all day without crying." Jiang Xia couldn't resist leaning down to kiss her son.
Zhou Chenglei looked at Jiang Xia, then at their increasingly plump son, and then turned his gaze to the two bicycles rapidly approaching them.
He fell back a step and moved to Jiang Xia's other side.
They were walking on a small path back home. The village had very few vehicles, even bicycles were scarce, so Zhou Chenglei let Jiang Xia walk in the middle while he walked on the side. The edges of the path were overgrown with weeds, and snakes occasionally appeared, especially during the summer afternoons.
Jiang Xia looked up and saw the two bicycles racing each other, assuming it was a couple arguing, with one chasing the other. She moved closer to the side of the path, stopped, and tugged at Zhou Chenglei's sleeve, signaling him to move aside as well so they wouldn't get in the way.
"Wenwan, don't ride so fast! Wait for me!" Zhou Guohua shouted loudly.
Wenwan had no reason, and her feet pedaled even faster!
In the evening, many people carried buckets of fish home, and some brought live fish that were kept in seawater, making the road a bit wet.
As the bicycles drew closer, it wasn't clear if Wenwan had seen the wet mud pit, but her bicycle wheels rolled right into it.
The wheels slipped, and the direction changed, heading straight toward Jiang Xia.
Zhou Chenglei's eyes narrowed, and he quickly pulled Jiang Xia away, shielding her and the children with his outstretched arms.
The situation was urgent, and his movements were swift and forceful. The two buckets he was carrying flew out and hit the bicycle's handlebars, causing Wenwan's bicycle to veer off course.
The bicycle careened off the path.
Jiang Xia watched as the bicycle continued down the slope, hitting a rock and sending Wenwan flying off, landing on the sand.
"Wenwan!" Zhou Guohua quickly stopped his bicycle, threw it aside, and rushed down to help Wenwan up.
Wenwan had hit her head and was covered in sand when she was lifted up.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?" Zhou Guohua anxiously checked Wenwan's arms and legs.
Wenwan, with a mouth full of sand, spat forcefully.
Zhou Chenglei glanced at his still-sleeping son, put his arm around Jiang Xia's shoulders, and without a backward glance at the two below, said, "Let's go!"
Wenwan continued spitting out sand and, seeing Zhou Chenglei and Jiang Xia walking away, shouted, "You can't just leave! You knocked me down and think you can just walk away?"
Jiang Xia stopped. "Are you crazy? It was you who almost hit us, and we didn't even argue with you. Now you have the nerve to blame us? If you want to die, go somewhere else and don't drag others down with you!"
"Zhao Chenglei deliberately knocked into my bicycle with his water bucket, or I wouldn't have crashed down the beach! Don't try to argue!"
Jiang Xia: "Yes, we are arguing. It's our fault for not standing there to be hit by you! We should have jumped off the beach to let you pass. That's right, isn't it?"
Zhou Guohua: "…No, Xiao Wan didn't mean that! You're misunderstanding."
Wenwan: "I didn't say that. I just said Zhao Chenglei deliberately hit my bicycle! Otherwise, I wouldn't have crashed down!"
Jiang Xia was truly angry: "Fine! It's Zhao Chenglei's fault! We'll apologize to you!"
Jiang Xia turned and headed back to the collective farm.
The road wasn't empty; other villagers were around, and some people at the dock had also seen what happened.
She wanted to see who was right and who was wrong!
Zhao Chenglei, unsure of what Jiang Xia was planning, hurried to follow her.
Wenwan had a bad feeling.
Jiang Xia borrowed a handheld megaphone from the collective farm.
She handed her son to Zhao Chenglei: "You take the children home first. I'm going to walk around the farm."
Zhao Chenglei: "…"
Jiang Xia walked to the dock and loudly announced through the megaphone: "Comrade Wenwan, I'm sorry for causing you to crash into the beach with your bicycle! You're right! When you were riding your bicycle quickly on the road, we shouldn't have stood by the side to let you pass. We should have jumped off the beach to let you pass. That way, you wouldn't have almost hit us!"
"Seeing you riding your bicycle towards me with the children, my husband shouldn't have deliberately reached out to protect us! He should have let you hit us directly, along with the children, so we all would have been hit. That way, you wouldn't have fallen off the beach! I'm very sorry, Comrade Wenwan! You're right, he deliberately used his bucket to hit your bicycle, causing you to fall. We, as a couple, apologize to you. Please forgive us! I'm sorry!"
"Dear fellow villagers, uncles, and brothers, when Comrade Wenwan was riding her bicycle and almost hit me, she said my husband, Zhao Chenglei, deliberately used his bucket to hit her bicycle, causing her to fall. We are now apologizing to her, and we hope everyone can witness this!"
People at the dock who hadn't seen what happened started asking those around them what had occurred.
Those who had seen it from a distance explained.
Everyone was speechless!
"Riding a bicycle and almost hitting someone, and then blaming them for protecting their wife and child? Who does she think she is? The Empress Dowager Cixi?"
"Even if Zhao Chenglei did it on purpose, so what? If I were Zhao Chenglei and someone dared to hit my wife, I would kick them!"
"What kind of person is this? Accusing people first! And she's a college student? She's just reading the wrong books! She hit someone with her bicycle and thinks she's in the right? Others dodged her, and she still wants an apology?"
"Riding a bicycle and hitting people in the village, shouldn't such a bully be criticized and educated? There are so many children running around in the village. What if she hits one of them one day?"
…
After Jiang Xia finished speaking, she continued walking, repeating her words as she approached Wenwan: "Comrade Wenwan, I'm sorry…"
She then asked: "Comrade Wenwan, is my apology sincere enough?"
Wenwan, watching Jiang Xia with the megaphone, was so angry that her temples were trembling!
She hadn't wronged them; Zhao Chenglei had done it on purpose, his eyes cold at the time.
She hadn't really wanted to hit them, just scare Jiang Xia a bit and let off some steam!
Zhou Guohua covered his face, feeling he had lost all his dignity in this life!
Sigh, I couldn't sleep at 1:40 AM, and I have to get up at 6:25 AM tomorrow. What do people do when they can't sleep?
Every month, there are a few days when I can't sleep, it's so annoying!
