Chapter 56: Nonsense
Chapter 56: Nonsense
Hermione couldn't remember how she had left Sherlock's office.
She even forgot whether she had said goodbye to Sherlock when she left.
It wasn't until she reached the corner of the third-floor corridor, where Harry and Ron called out to her, that Hermione snapped out of her dazed state.
Harry noticed her condition and asked worriedly,
"Did Professor Forrest find out we were testing him?"
Ron, thinking along the same lines as Harry, waved his hand nonchalantly and said,
"So what if he did? We didn't do anything bad. The worst he could do is give us detention and make us clean the toilets."
Hermione took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure, and then spoke in a heavy voice,
"No, we weren't discovered by Professor Forrest. The third test was a success. I now know that his jinx doesn't always activate."
"There seems to be a probability threshold. His jinx amplifies the likelihood of something that already has a chance of happening, making it almost certain."
"But if the chance of something happening is extremely low, like the test we conducted today—"
"I had already completed most of my holiday homework, leaving only two lines. The probability of finishing the homework was already close to one hundred percent."
"Even if Professor Forrest believed I would complete the homework, the jinx couldn't affect me because I was already certain to finish it."
"Similarly, the sun almost always rises from the east every day. The jinx can't influence events with such a high probability of success."
"So we don't need to worry about the world being destroyed because of Professor Forrest's jinx."
Harry and Ron listened with wide eyes. They didn't understand the part about probabilities, but they understood the last sentence.
They blinked, still puzzled, and couldn't figure out why Hermione looked so distressed.
Harry couldn't help but ask,
"If the world isn't going to end, why do you look like it's the end of the world?"
Hearing this, Hermione's expression became even more miserable, like she was about to cry.
She said in a voice that was almost tearful,
"Because, at the end, Professor Forrest said, 'Have a pleasant Christmas Holiday!'"
As soon as Hermione spoke, the atmosphere became heavy.
Ron's face showed fear, and he stared at Hermione with a look of deep sorrow, as if she were about to leave them forever.
He said painfully,
"It's over! It's all over! This is worse than any curse in the legends! And there's no solution!"
Harry was also stunned, but as a former victim, he tried to calm Hermione down.
"Don't worry, Hermione. You don't need to be so afraid. I was cursed by Professor Forrest last time, and I'm still fine, aren't I?"
However, Harry's words didn't help. Hermione was intelligent enough to know that her situation was different from Harry's. Her eyes were red, and she looked like she might cry.
"We're not the same, Harry. My parents are Muggles. I'm the target of the monster from the Chamber of Secrets. Justin and Colin, who were cursed before, were both petrified. I won't be able to escape it either!"
Hermione's analysis was correct. They had conducted three tests on Sherlock's jinx and knew how terrifying it was.
With Justin and Colin as examples, Harry also became frantic. After thinking for a long time, he could only come up with one solution.
"Maybe we should tell the professors everything? They can protect you over Christmas, and we might even catch the attacker this way!"
The three of them had no better ideas. They couldn't just stand by and watch Hermione get petrified.
Although the two students who had been attacked earlier were not in mortal danger, no one could guarantee that the same would happen to Hermione.
However, they disagreed on which professor to approach.
"Let's go to Professor Forrest. We can tell him everything, including the fact that his jinxes work almost every time. Once he knows the reason, he'll help us."
Harry now had a great deal of trust in Sherlock, even though his blessing had brought him bad luck for a whole day in the past. Even with Hermione's current danger, Harry knew it was all an accident on Sherlock's part.
Ron also trusted Sherlock but was skeptical about his ability to protect Hermione.
"I think we should go to Professor Dumbledore. Only he can ensure Hermione's safety."
Hermione, sniffling, rejected Harry's suggestion to go to Sherlock.
"We can't tell Professor Forrest everything now. All his jinxes have only worked when he was unaware. If he knows everything, who knows what will happen to the curse on me. If the result is bad, I'll be in real trouble!"
Hermione's reasoning was sound, and they ultimately decided not to go to Sherlock but to find Dumbledore instead.
However, Dumbledore was rarely at Hogwarts. As a renowned wizard in the entire magical world, he was often busy with matters outside the school.
To find Dumbledore, they would need to go through Professor Mcgonagall first to bring him back.
So, Harry, Ron, and Hermione rushed to Professor Mcgonagall's office, babbling out everything they knew.
After nearly half an hour, Professor Mcgonagall, frowning, finally managed to piece together what they were saying.
"You're saying Miss Granger is under Sherlock's curse, just like Finchley and Creevey, and she will be attacked by the monster in the Chamber of Secrets?"
The three of them nodded nervously, confirming the situation.
Professor Mcgonagall's frown deepened.
"How did Sherlock put Miss Granger under the curse?"
Ron blurted out without hesitation.
"Professor, he wished Hermione a happy Christmas Holiday!"
Harry added quickly.
"Yes, Professor Mcgonagall! Justin was cursed when Professor Forrest wished him a happy Halloween, and Colin was cursed when Professor Forrest wished him good luck the day before. Now it's Hermione's turn, and she's in real danger!"
Professor Mcgonagall's face darkened.
"Nonsense! Have you all been idle recently? Do you have nothing better to do than come here to amuse me? Leave immediately! Or I will send you to detention and deduct twenty points from Gryffindor!"
