Chapter 56: A Bet with Hagrid
Chapter 56: A Bet with Hagrid
The young wizards were distracted during class, their minds preoccupied with the morning's news from the Daily Prophet.
Especially those from Muggle families, who, after quickly catching up on the Snallygaster situation, couldn't help but worry about the safety of their families.
After all, it was one of the most dangerous creatures in the magical world, known to roam and feed on human brains. If it were to venture into Muggle communities...
The thought made them even more anxious, and they couldn't help but stare out the window, eagerly awaiting an owl's return with a reply.
The professors had no easy solution, only slowing down the teaching pace and offering what comfort they could.
It wasn't until the second period of the morning that things started to look up.
"Come on, everyone, focus!" Professor Sprout said with a smile as she entered the greenhouse for Herbology class, seeing the listless young wizards. "Just now, Mr. Newt Scamander has made a statement confirming that the Snallygaster has not been spotted in either the magical or Muggle communities.
So it's likely that it has flown elsewhere, and you don't need to worry about your families' safety anymore."
As Professor Sprout spoke, she brought out her treasured newsletters, sharing Newt Scamander's achievements with everyone.
Kyle noticed that some of the newsletters were quite old, and the oldest one had faded, commending Newt for his outstanding contribution in defeating the dark wizard Grindelwald.
There was also a photo of a young and handsome Newt Scamander.
The young wizards felt much more at ease after reading the newsletters.
With the assurance from the most renowned figure in the magical world, they felt reassured.
Moreover, this person was a long-time friend of Headmaster Dumbledore, which made his words even more credible.
By noon, the Great Hall was bustling again.
"I can't believe I forgot we have class in the afternoon," Cedric said, picking up a potato with its skin on and looking disappointed. "Looks like I can't go with you to find Hagrid. What a pity."
The second-year curriculum was more demanding than the first, with classes most days, except for weekends and holidays.
"It's just to get some Moonstruck Beast fertilizer. What's so disappointing about that?" Kyle took a bite of his bread and asked, "Are you planning to grow ornamental plants too?"
"No, I'm just interested in Moonstruck Beasts," Cedric replied. "I heard they perform a very complex dance in the moonlight, and it sounds fascinating. Plus, I've never seen a real Moonstruck Beast before."
"You probably won't see the dance," Kyle shrugged. "That only happens at night, and by then, it's past the castle's curfew. Unless you want to break the rules."
"I know," Cedric said. "I just want to see the Moonstruck Beast."
"That's still possible," Kyle nodded.
While Moonstruck Beasts sleep during the day, they usually live in caves, so they can still be observed from the outside.
Of course, this was assuming Hagrid would take them to the Forbidden Forest.
Kyle put down his pumpkin juice, "Let's finish eating and head over there. We still have over an hour before class starts, so we should make it in time."
Cedric's eyes lit up, "Really?
"Of course, there's no set time anyway."
At this moment, Kyle also noticed that Conna seemed interested, so he casually asked, "Do you want to come along?"
"Yeah!" Conna hesitated for a moment and nodded.
Thanks to Professor Sprout's blessing, she now admired Newt Scamander immensely and was very curious about all the strange and wonderful magical creatures.
After lunch, the three of them went together to the small cabin next to the Forbidden Forest.
This time, they didn't knock on the door. When they arrived, Hagrid was watering the pumpkin patch.
After Halloween, the enormous pumpkins in the field had all disappeared, leaving only some immature seedlings.
"To the Forbidden Forest?"
After Kyle stated their purpose, Hagrid shook his head repeatedly, "No, no, first-year young wizards can't go to the Forbidden Forest, it's too dangerous."
"It's okay, Hagrid."
Kyle smiled and said, "No one at Hogwarts knows the Forbidden Forest better than you. Besides, the Moonstruck Beast lives on the relatively safe edge of the forest. With you by our side, we'll definitely be safe."
"Even if you say that, I..."
"Oh, and you know a lot about magical creatures, too." Kyle continued, "I dare say that after Professor Kettleburn retires, you'll definitely become the new Care of Magical Creatures professor."
"Me, a professor?... No, you must be joking, that's impossible. I'm nowhere near as good as Professor Kettleburn."
Even through his thick beard, Cedric could see the panic on Hagrid's face.
"Alright, but you're right about one thing. I do know the Forbidden Forest and its creatures well."
Hagrid looked at the three of them and put down the watering can, saying, "Follow me, I'll take you to see the Moonstruck Beasts.
But you must stay close to me and not run off. Otherwise, I'll immediately bring you out and never let you enter the Forbidden Forest again!"
"We promise, Professor Hagrid!" they all said in unison.
The word "Professor" once again made Hagrid's face turn red.
But soon, he seemed to think of something and his mood suddenly became low, "I can't possibly be a professor, don't call me that anymore, it won't sound good to others."
"You need to have more confidence in yourself."
Kyle patted his hand and said seriously, "In four years at most, you'll definitely become a professor."
"Impossible." Hagrid shook his head, "You don't need to comfort me."
He couldn't even use his wand in front of others, how could he become a professor?
"How about we make a bet?"
Kyle extended four fingers, "If you don't become a professor in four years, I'll find a way for Newt to agree to let you foster his dragon for two months during the summer break at Hogwarts."
Hagrid stopped in his tracks and turned around in disbelief, "Mr. Scamander has a dragon?"
"Yes." Kyle nodded, "It has a very bad temper and attacks any creature it sees indiscriminately after leaving Newt, so it's been sent back three times by the Romanian Dragon Reserve. The third time, they even refused to take it back.
Additionally, its personality is not suitable for release into the wild, so it can only be kept in a box."
"I agree." Hagrid nodded immediately.
