Chapter 556: Agent K's Return
Chapter 556: Agent K's Return
"What? You're already back in the room?" Agent J's voice, incredulous, came through the communicator. "You managed to run away from Selena, who was so close to you? I can only say that Magic is truly amazing. Alright, stay there and don't move around. I'll come and pick you up right away."
Liam and the others waited in the apartment for about ten minutes before the door was knocked on. Agent J stood outside, looking anxious. When they opened the door, he said, "Today has been absolutely terrible. Headquarters was attacked by Selena, and most of my allies have been controlled by her. From what I know, her plan could destroy our Earth. Can you help us?"
"Of course we can", Liam said with a light laugh, then added self-deprecatingly, "I'm used to this kind of thing. Every time I arrive in a new world, I end up saving the people there. It feels like I'm a harbinger of doom."
"This isn't your fault", Hermione consoled him. "I think you're a true savior. Many worlds would be much worse off without you. For example, in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, if it weren't for you, an outsider, I can't imagine anyone else being able to save so many enslaved people and give them the dignity they deserve."
"You sound more capable than the students in the Harry Potter books", Agent J managed a weak smile. "Of course, that's a good thing. The hope of rescuing everyone and saving Earth is much greater than I imagined before I came upstairs."
"Where are we going now?" Liam asked as they got into the car.
"To find another Memory Restoration Device", Agent J said as he drove. "My colleague, K, retired a few years ago. For security reasons, I erased his memory. But now we need to restore his memory to figure out what Selena's plan is on Earth. All I know is one phrase: Light of Sator. Selena, that evil queen, is looking for this thing. But I have no idea what the Light of Sator is. I think only K knows about it."
"Alright, I may not be able to help with much else, but I can ensure that we'll be of assistance in any battles", Liam said, sensing his urgency and trying to reassure him.
"Thank you. I think we'll have a lot of battles in the next few days, and I'll really need your help", Agent J said, shaking his head slightly.
They soon arrived at an old friend of Agent J's. In the basement, Liam looked at the memory restoration device, which was a mishmash of household computers, blenders, boat engines, and bowling balls, with a mix of shock and disbelief.
"J", Liam said to Agent J, "we Wizards have studied the soul and memory. It's a very intricate and complex field, but this machine is—"
"I know this thing is just a bunch of junk cobbled together and might not work well", J said, locking the last strap to secure K in the machine. He looked at Liam and shrugged helplessly. "But the problem is, this broken machine is our only option. We have to take a risk."
With that, he had his alien friend start the machine. It shook violently, as if it were trying to blend a person. After an unexpected power outage, K was flung out of the machine. He seemed to remember nothing, but he quickly dispatched an alien with a regenerating head and staggered toward the surface.
"This broken machine is garbage, I told you earlier—" Liam didn't finish his sentence as the basement walls collapsed, and four bizarre-looking aliens burst in with guns.
"Binding Spell" "Stupefy." These aliens had very low resistance to Magic, and simple offensive spells easily subdued them. Of course, this was also due to Liam and Hermione's extensive combat experience. Additionally, these aliens had been in prison for a long time, so their skills had somewhat deteriorated.
After all the Alien Criminals were knocked to the ground, Agent K finally regained his memory and walked down. To his surprise, he had initially thought J wouldn't be able to handle these criminals. But when he came down, he saw that the four Alien Criminals were already lying on the ground.
"It looks like the helpers you found are quite formidable!" K said to J as they all started heading upstairs.
"Why do you think it was the two helpers I found and not me showing my strength?" J asked K, looking at him. "After all, they are just kids. How could you think they are more powerful than me?"
"Kids?" K gave Liam and the others a serious look. "I can tell from their habits that they are seasoned warriors. As for their appearance, you know that among the various disguises aliens can take, children are one of them."
"Alright, that must be the kind of experience that comes with age", J said, somewhat reluctantly. "They are Wizards from other worlds. They originally came to our world to engage in trade and cultural exchange, but they got caught up in this mess."
On the way in the car, J gave K a brief overview of Liam and the others' identities and some of their abilities. K nodded. "You've done well in this matter, especially given our shortage of personnel. Every capable person is valuable to us."
Then K turned to Liam and the others. "Kids, I'm really sorry you had to see such a grim side of our world. But I truly appreciate your help. We still need your Magic to assist us, and of course, this won't be a favor. Once this is over, you can become external Men in Black and receive High-Level Exchange Authorization."
"No problem", Liam said firmly. "Eliminating these evils and restoring stability to this world is also our goal. After all, I came here to trade and exchange, and a chaotic or even destroyed world would not meet my needs."
As they discussed the characteristics of different worlds, the car arrived at the pizzeria where the murder had taken place. J noticed that K had half a photo that matched one in the store. However, his subsequent deductions were clearly off the mark. After searching the store, they only found a box of canned oil-preserved sardines. The real key was actually right next to that photo.
At this point, K wanted to erase the memory of the witness, Lola, but J stopped him. J believed she was a key figure with crucial information about the case, so her memory couldn't be erased yet.
"The problem is that we have important business to attend to and can't take care of her", K said to J after putting away the Memory Eraser. "But as a key witness, we can't leave her here; the Alien Criminals will come back."
"That's easy", Liam volunteered. "I don't think the task you need to do requires all four of us. We can split up. You go get the item, and we'll take care of Lola."
"Great idea, sometimes more people are better", J said happily, but K interrupted. "We appreciate your willingness to help, but this is your first time in our world, and you're not familiar with everything. So I'll take you to a group of acquaintances who can help you look after Lola."
"Understood", Liam nodded. He could understand K's concern. Despite their friendly appearance, they had only known each other for less than 72 hours. In such a situation, it was natural to consider safety and not let them take an important witness like Lola around without supervision.
Of course, in the current dire situation, wasting two capable fighters was a bad idea, and outright refusal would create a serious rift. So K decided to let Liam and the others stay with a group of acquaintances to look after the important witness.
"Don't worry, we'll be there soon", J said loudly as the five of them squeezed into the car. "I'll take you to a group of aliens. They may look a bit strange, but they're all interesting little guys, and you'll like them."
