Chapter 554: Mib
Chapter 554: Mib
Under Liam's gaze, the man who had shattered the glass and burst into the subway car quickly rolled to his feet. After shaking off the shards, he pulled out a badge and said as he moved forward, "Hello everyone! I'm a member of the Subway Authority. Please move to the front car immediately. There's been an alien intrusion in the electrical system."
"Alien intrusion?" Liam and Hermione exchanged a puzzled look. How could a normal person possibly catch up to a speeding subway train and then break through the glass to get in?
For safety, Liam and Hermione simultaneously drew their wands, pointing them at the spot where the young black man had entered. However, the other passengers on the train seemed remarkably calm, continuing with their activities.
"Hey, everyone, there's an alien intrusion!" the young black man shouted, sounding exasperated. At that moment, Liam noticed he bore a striking resemblance to Will Smith.
"I think I've seen this movie before. Next—” Liam thought, but then a metallic groan filled the air. Suddenly, the entire rear of the subway car vanished, replaced by a massive mouth lined with rows of teeth. Instantly, the car erupted into chaos, with people screaming and running toward the front.
"You know you should be running, right? Don't run, sit down. It's just a 600-foot-long worm", the black man muttered. He then noticed Liam and Hermione standing there. "Hey, you two, this isn't cosplay time. You should—” He stopped, his eyes widening in surprise at the scene before him.
The two young people he had thought were cosplaying simultaneously raised the small wooden sticks in their hands and shouted, "Stupefy!" Instantly, two beams of red light shot out, striking the giant worm. The worm let out a cry and slowly closed its eyes, ceasing its pursuit of the subway train.
"Oh, my God!" The black man's eyes nearly popped out. "Wait, which planet are you from? I remember that in New York, you need to register to possess powerful weapons, and I don't recall ever seeing the two of you around."
"Which planet?" Hermione was taken aback. "We're just humans! From Britain."
"I don't remember any Brits using small wooden sticks to emit red light and knock out a worm that big", the black man said. "I know many aliens who come to Earth love Earth's culture and even become obsessed with it, but I've never seen anyone as obsessed as you."
Perhaps due to the spell's effect, the worm did not pursue them further. The train moved forward for a short distance before gradually coming to a stop. Looking at the sign, Liam realized they had arrived at 81st Street Station. The black man stopped his rambling and said to Liam and Hermione, "Ah, I need to take care of something. Wait for me at the subway exit." With that, he walked toward the front car where the other passengers were standing.
"What did he mean by that?" Hermione asked, puzzled, after the black man left. "Aliens? Could we be in a sci-fi world?"
"It doesn't seem like it. Otherwise, we wouldn't be on such an old subway", Liam said. "Of course, this world is different from ours. A normal subway wouldn't have a giant worm. But I'm not sure what's going on exactly."
As they exited, they passed the front car and saw the black man holding a shiny silver device, talking to the other passengers. Liam faintly heard something about a drill.
"This scene feels familiar", Liam thought. "It's like a story from a sci-fi comedy, probably called Men in Black. But which part of the series is this?"
As he pondered, the black man walked over and pulled out a device that looked like an oval-shaped cell phone, pointing it at them. Hermione tensed, as if ready to attack, but Liam held her back, whispering, "Don't worry, it's probably a connected camera phone. He might need to verify our identities."
Sure enough, after the device, which resembled a mobile phone, beeped twice, the black man addressed Liam and his companions: "It's clear that you haven't obtained the necessary permit to reside on Earth from the Men in Black. Of course, I can understand the issues you, as alien refugees, might be facing. You might be hesitant to contact us for safety reasons. However, I want to assure you that Earth is a safe neutral zone. You don't need to hide your identities. So, I hope you will go to the Mib headquarters to apply for a residence permit."
"Sir, you might be mistaken", Liam said, looking somewhat helplessly at the man before him. After confirming which world they were in, Liam immediately deduced that this black man was Agent J from the Men in Black movies. "We are indeed pure Earthlings, but we are Wizards, and we come from another world."
"Wizards?" Agent J glanced at the wands in Liam's and his companions' hands and said, "I can understand that you might be very fond of Earth's culture and even consider yourselves Wizards from the Harry Potter books. However, as aliens, you must register with the Mib, or—"
Before he could finish, Liam tapped the multifunctional communicator in his hand with his wand. In Agent J's stunned gaze, the device transformed into a small hamster that was actively moving its cheeks.
"This is—simply—" Agent J stared in shock at the hamster in his hand. After a few minutes, he was certain that what he had just seen was not an illusion or a hologram. The young Asian man before him was indeed a Wizard, just as he claimed. "I think we should find a place to sit down and talk over some food."
About half an hour later, in a Great Hall, Agent J listened to Liam's account of his identity and the reason for his presence (to engage in technological and resource exchanges across different worlds). Stunned, he sat there for a moment before regaining his composure and said, "Alright, even though you aren't aliens and don't seem to have any malicious intentions, I still recommend that you register at our Mib headquarters. It will make things much easier for you in the future."
"Where exactly is your headquarters?" Liam asked.
"It's an organization that, theoretically, doesn't exist in any context. It was initially established by the Federation, but they've probably forgotten about us. This organization is responsible for handling refugees from other planets." As he spoke, Agent J glanced at Liam and his companions, recalling his initial shock upon learning their names, especially Hermione's. "Perhaps, in the future, we might have visitors from other worlds like you."
"That sounds great. You could think of us as Earth's customs officers!" Liam smiled and said, "So, when would be a good time to register?"
"How about in the next couple of days? I assume you haven't found a place to stay yet. I can provide you with a temporary residence. Once I contact the headquarters and have them prepare the registration forms for people from other worlds, I'll personally escort you there", Agent J thought for a moment and suggested.
"Would that be too much trouble for you?" Liam asked, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"No, not at all", Agent J shook his head. "It's part of my job, and besides, I get a few days of paid leave for handling unprecedented travelers."
After finishing the last bit of food on their plates, Liam and his companions were driven to an apartment in New York. Upon entering, Liam found the apartment spotlessly clean, with all the necessary daily items provided.
"This is a safehouse. You can stay here for the next couple of days. Just make sure you don't leave the area within two blocks. There's food in the fridge, and here", he said, pulling out two silver Bluetooth earbud-like devices, "you should keep these with you. I'll contact you once everything is ready."
"Alright, thank you. We won't go far from here", Liam took the communicators and said goodbye to Agent J, marking the beginning of his life in New York in 2002.
