Chapter 55: Lanchi Arrives at the Performance Venue
Chapter 55: Lanchi Arrives at the Performance Venue
In the grand theater of the Demon Academy, an immersive concert was underway.
On the center stage, a demon with blue flames erupting from its head performed passionately, its silhouette clearly visible under the spotlight. The creature's roar was loud and wild, like a howl from the deepest depths of hell, each note imbued with the power of death rock.
The judges' faces were equally intense as they listened, their expressions serious and focused, some furrowing their brows while others closed their eyes to better appreciate the performer's voice.
As the lights dimmed and the entire arena plunged into darkness, the stage erupted with light and shadow, and the singing exploded in the silence, reaching the climax of the performance. In an instant, fiery magic illuminated the entire stage, and students in the back rows burst into shouts that echoed throughout the theater.
For a moment, Lanchi felt like the Demon Academy was experimenting with some innovative teaching methods.
But the stranger the setting, the more bizarre this Level 2 trial seemed.
According to Bachelet, this challenge was undoubtedly several times more difficult than the Level 1 Demon Magic Written Exam they had faced earlier.
Lanchi scanned the entire grand theater classroom.
The four music mentors sitting in front of the stage, who seemed to be the judges, had high-ranking positions but did not possess strong magical power. In contrast, the teacher standing behind the curtain, resembling a host, exuded a terrifying magical aura.
This host teacher seemed to be the one in control of the classroom and the enforcer of its rules, and their elegant attire and accessories suggested a higher position in the Demon Academy's faculty than the dragon demon and owl demon from the previous exam room.
As expected.
Lanchi, Hyperion, and Bachelet, seated in the audience, soon received the exam guidelines sent by the teacher through a small, winged, black eyeball-like helper imp.
On the cover of the brown booklet were the words:
Demon World Music: Graduation Exam and Performance
Location: Corridor G24, Demon King's Theater
"Another exam?" Lanchi muttered as he flipped open the booklet.
"We're nearing the end of the term, so there will be more graduation exam-type courses lately," Bachelet whispered beside him.
This was his first time stepping into a Level 2 classroom, and he was already intimidated.
During this period, walking into any classroom might lead to encountering an exam.
However, to earn the necessary five credit coins per day, one had to grit their teeth and take the tests. Failing to submit the required coins would result in execution.
Only students with a substantial surplus of credit coins could afford to relax during this exam-filled season.
"Well, we're already here," Lanchi nodded, and began perusing the guidelines for this class.
The pamphlet was thin, and it took only a minute or two to read through.
The rules were quite simple.
Upon entering the classroom, students could choose when to take the exam—
That is, when to go on stage and perform Demon World music:
[Exam Requirements: Your music must receive the approval of at least two music mentors.]
[Performance time limit: 2 minutes. Each specially invited music mentor has sworn an oath to the Demon King to judge the performance fairly and strictly based on their musical expertise.]
[Note: Students must not use any magic while watching the performance. Only magic that enhances the performance is permitted during the performance, and offensive magic aimed at the mentors below the stage is strictly prohibited.]
[Violators will be instantly eradicated by the Magical Eye, and those who fail to meet the requirements will be executed on the spot. Those who have not attempted the exam by the end of the class will also be executed. Those who satisfy the exam requirements may leave the exam room at the end of the class.]
The explanation continued, stating that regardless of whether one took the exam early or late, they could not leave midway. Students were required to remain in the audience for the duration, providing feedback and basic interaction with the performers.
After all, in addition to being a graduation exam, this was also a public performance in the Demon World, and it couldn't lose the most important element of excitement.
Lanci looked up and noticed a huge magical eye floating at the top of the classroom, seemingly observing the entire room and transmitting the scene to another location.
"Lanci, are you good at music?"
Hyperion had finished reading the handbook and placed it flat on her thighs, turning to look at Lanci and ask.
Since Lanci had chosen this classroom, he must have had some confidence.
As for her, although she had been cultivated in the arts since childhood, she couldn't claim to be proficient.
"I'm average at music, but when it comes to art, there are some commonalities."
Lanci folded his arms and gazed contemplatively at the performance on stage.
Music couldn't be mastered overnight, and in the Shadow World, unless there was an operational error, there wouldn't be an unsolvable situation. So, this exam likely wasn't purely testing the challenger's artistic cultivation but should also have a hidden way to pass.
Of course, there were also times when exceptionally talented challengers might breeze through without needing to rely on the mechanics.
For example, in the previous Demon Magic Written Exam, if someone was exceptionally gifted and could directly write out the answers, they could confidently walk out of the exam room.
"Then I'll just watch you."
Hyperion nodded. Unless Lanci gave her specific instructions, she would just protect him when needed.
However, she hadn't expected Lanci to be so confident in his artistic abilities.
"It's over... I'm doomed," Bachelet muttered, his face turning pale as he finished reading the guidelines.
He now deeply regretted his greed in following Lanci into this Level 2 classroom.
Seeing Lanci's calm expression, he thought there might be a way to pass, but with this solo performance, he couldn't bring Bachelet through with him!
"Calm down first. You still need to guide us, so I'll make sure to protect you."
Lanci patted Bachelet on the shoulder, reassuring him.
Bachelet nodded vigorously in response, finding solace in the fact that the Radiant Demon Lord was by his side.
Lanci then turned his gaze back to the stage and the four mentors.
For now, they didn't know how difficult it would be to gain the approval of the music mentors.
Just then, as they entered the classroom, the performance of the student they saw on stage had ended, and the judging segment began.
As they awaited the results, Lanci and Hyperion exchanged a glance.
"What do you think?"
"Pretty amazing."
Surprisingly, they both felt that the musical performance was of an extremely high standard.
At the very least, this student had earned Lanci and Hyperion's approval.
However...
On the four large chairs facing the stage.
Only one mentor's facial expression hinted at satisfaction with the performance, while the other three wore looks as heavy as iron.
"I think it's okay."
"I don't agree."
"Not good enough."
"Terrible."
And so, in the silent judgment, the host teacher raised his hand, displaying his unique coldness and decisiveness. In the next moment, the demon student's body seemed to blossom with a blood flower, and the corpse fell to the stage with a crash, a damp crimson spreading beneath his feet like a hastily ended revelry.
