Chapter 55: Emphasizing Spiritual Civilization
Chapter 55: Emphasizing Spiritual Civilization
Upon hearing this, Sag turned to look, "A natural disaster?"
The slave laborer said, "Captain, I've heard your infamous name from those guards. They say you're an extremely cruel pirate who has destroyed countless places and killed numerous kings."
Another slave laborer raised his hand and added, "Yes, I've heard that too. The news papers describe you as a natural disaster, bringing destruction wherever you appear."
"That's right, Captain," chimed in another slave. "I've heard that too. I didn't believe it at first, but you destroyed that massive bridge! That's incredible!"
"That was Captain Karg!"
Sag corrected him, "And I haven't killed that many kings, just three."
He was a man of facts and didn't exaggerate his accomplishments.
However, his honesty only served to make the slave laborers admire him even more.
These were kings they were talking about!
Whether they were from non-affiliated countries or criminals, most of them came from nations with kings. Having grown up under a ruler, they had never questioned the authority of a king, even if they were discontent.
Now, there was someone who had actually killed three kings—an astonishing feat!
"Truly worthy of being our captain, accomplishing what we could never do!" The slave laborers cheered once more.
"Alright, alright," Sag waved his hand to quiet them down. He then looked up at the sparkling night sky, pondering for a moment before continuing, "It seems we already have a title, so I guess that settles it."
Pirate crews were usually just called by their captain's name, but some captains did give their crew a unique name. Sag himself had wanted to come up with a name, after all, this was his startup venture.
But now that they had a title, his chosen name would have to be discarded. Typically, a pirate crew was either named after their captain or, if the captain became famous enough, their name would reflect the captain's behavior or characteristics.
'Red-Haired Shanks' had bright red hair, and 'Whitebeard' had a white beard—these were characteristics.
As for behavior, there was 'Big Mom', a mother to many children and of large stature, and the 'Hundred Beasts' pirate crew, named after their captain who had the most Zoan-type Devil Fruits.
The former was a characteristic, and the latter was a behavior.
And now, due to his actions, Sag had been dubbed 'Natural Disaster', and thus, his pirate crew would be known as the Natural Disaster Pirates.
"Then this ship shall be named the 'Death Star'!"
Sag chose the latter of the two options, and continued, "From now on, this shall be the flagship of the Natural Disaster Pirates. As for the rest of you, work hard and strive to become officers. If you show exceptional performance, I will appoint you as captains of your own ships under our flag!"
"Ohh!!" The six hundred people on board cheered collectively.
However, the officers' expressions remained subdued.
Lily was the navigator, Renetia was the shipwright, and Marika was the cook. These three had no aspirations of becoming captains; although they were officers, their roles were irreplaceable on the ship.
Lily had sworn to follow Sag and serve as his navigator, with no interest in captaining a ship. Switching roles would only hinder her work.
Renetia, on the other hand, wanted to stay with the first ship she had ever built, watching it sail proudly across the seas, defying all weather and waves. She needed to oversee the ship's maintenance and create the materials required for its strengthening. The idea of becoming a captain of another ship held no appeal for her.
Marika had no interest in such things. She had been semi-forced onto Sag's ship and wanted to research nothing but belly-filling food and delicacies. She was quite content to remain by Sag's side.
Ajin had no interest in that either. He identified with Sag and was very loyal. Rather than becoming a captain, he preferred to serve under Sag's command as the overall combat leader of the ship's pirates, faithfully executing Sag's orders.
Only Palu and the other pirates joined in the cheering, their faces lit with excitement.
Becoming a captain of a separate ship wouldn't be bad. From the looks of it, Captain Sag was planning to build a large fleet, just like Captain Creek, after all, they were both overlords of the East Blue.
He was the closest existence to the officers. As long as he performed well, he would soon become the captain of a new ship.
Of course, he wanted a promotion too as a pirate!
Sag waved his hand vigorously and laughed, "Let's hold a banquet to celebrate the new additions to our crew! Marika, will you be able to feed so many people?"
"Oh, it's such a wonderful feeling to be able to feed so many. I can do it alone, though," Marika replied with a gentle smile.
She had single-handedly provided for countless people in the Kingdom of Sand and Islands, and now with sufficient ingredients on the ship, she was more than capable of doing the same.
"Then let's have a feast! Hahahaha!"
Sag laughed heartily, "Everyone, let's liven up the place!"
"Ohh!!"
The slave laborers' shackles were easily unlocked. They were just ordinary iron chains, and Sag, seated on a throne in the banquet hall on the first floor, casually cut through them with a wave of his hand, setting these people free and marking their transition or evolution from slave laborers to the Natural Disaster Pirates!
There were bathing areas within the ship's cabins, but this ship didn't have an abundance of freshwater. In fact, as pirates, it was common to go without a bath for extended periods. The freshwater on the ship was primarily reserved for drinking. However, Sag was one who indulged in comforts, so he would definitely bathe, while others could do as they pleased.
And for these new members of his crew, it was only natural to hold a welcoming ceremony, especially after their labor. It was customary to take a bath after being released.
While the ship didn't have enough freshwater for everyone, they could always find an island.
He asked Lily to locate an island with a water source, and after sailing there, he let the pirates indulge in a good bath on the island. As for clothes, they would have to make do with what they had for now until they found an island with a town.
A bonfire blazed, and Palu led a group of people in transferring food and drinks from the ship to the island, setting up a festive atmosphere. The flickering light of the bonfire under the starry sky created a luminous glow like a shield of light.
The six hundred or so people on the island shouted, some crying, some brawling, all of them devouring meat with gusto and downing rum from wooden cups and barrels.
They were free!
Not only had they set sail on the boundless ocean, but they had also set foot on solid land. Aside from the delicious cuisine they had never tasted in their lives, just the fact that they could drink their fill of rum was enough to move some of them to tears.
Such was the power of this realization.
Sag sat on a wooden crate, taking a swig from an exquisite bottle of rum, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
This was how it should be. Once they vented their pent-up emotions, the knots in their hearts would unravel, and each one of them would emerge as fine, upstanding men.
This emphasis on the spiritual civilization of his crew was what a leader ought to do.
