Chapter 547: Lanchi's Favorability Has Decreased
Chapter 547: Lanchi's Favorability Has Decreased
In the Land of Eternal Night, within the small stone city under the rule of the Bear Clan, stood the majestic Snow Bear Hotel. Two gigantic statues of white bears guarded the palace-like structure, creating an imposing sight.
Stepping into the hotel lobby, one was greeted by warm lighting and comfortable heating. The walls were adorned with tapestries and totems of the Bear Clan, while a decorative magical fireplace took center stage, its orange glow dancing within.
Sigrid and Lanchi completed their check-in procedure at the reception desk.
For safety and convenience, they both agreed to stay in an apartment-style suite with two bedrooms and a living room.
"As long as a distinguished and noble client like yourself doesn't mind, I'm more than happy to enjoy better accommodations for this job," Sigrid said to Lanchi, carrying a box in each hand.
She found this employer to be quite generous. Even in the relatively safe Small Stone City, he was willing to let her stay in a convenient location, which would make her work much easier without the need for constant back and forth.
It was worth mentioning that the accommodations at the Snow Bear Palace didn't come cheap, and according to the contract, the employer would bear the cost of such expenses.
"It's no trouble at all," Lanchi replied with a casual smile.
He felt that Sigrid viewed him as an untouchable aristocratic lord, clearly drawing a line between them. If he had to describe it, it would be as if she would calmly accept his obvious disdain, believing that they belonged to different social classes.
The contract was the ironclad rule that governed their relationship; she merely did the job for the money.
Sigrid nodded and headed toward the stairs.
Lanchi sat on a sofa in the hotel lobby, writing on a notepad and watching over the luggage beside the sofa as he waited for Sigrid to make multiple trips to move their belongings.
Although Sigrid was only eleven or twelve years old, she was exceptionally strong. If not for her small stature, she might have been able to carry all four suitcases in one trip.
Soon, she returned after the first trip.
In the grand lobby, Sigrid's figure appeared particularly nimble. Her small hands firmly gripped the suitcases, and despite the apparent strain of the luggage's size and weight for her age, her face remained devoid of any signs of fatigue or displeasure.
Her strength was surprisingly formidable; each step she took was steady and powerful, unaffected by the weight of the boxes.
A nearby guest shook their head and sighed at the sight of Lanchi letting such a young child do manual labor, lamenting the ways of the world.
Lanchi, however, didn't pay it much mind as he, too, was working.
"...”
He watched as Sigrid departed once more.
Her small frame seemed even more diminutive amidst the hotel's grand halls and bright lights.
This reminded him of Sigrid's sister, Sigridur, who also liked to help him with his luggage.
On their journey back from the Northern Snowfields to Helrom, he would often realize that she had already carried their luggage, looking at him with a proud expression.
But little Sigrid was simply fulfilling the terms of the contract. He couldn't ask her to do more or less; everything had to be according to the black and white stipulations.
Lanchi sat in the lobby, his gaze once again falling on the small notebook in his hands.
Finally, Sigrid returned to the lobby after completing the last trip.
Her expression was neutral, but a slight furrow of confusion marked her brows.
It was as if she couldn't quite understand why her employer hadn't accompanied her upstairs during the second trip, choosing to wait in the lobby instead.
"Good evening," Sigrid said to Lanchi, who was still scribbling on his notepad.
She was not being polite, merely maintaining a professional demeanor out of habit.
Lanchi looked up, his gaze falling on the young yet highly competent bodyguard, and a hint of approval flashed in his eyes.
"Thank you, Sigrid."
Lanchi said, slightly speeding up his writing before pausing and tearing off the page from his notepad.
He handed the shopping list to Sigrid and then took out his wallet from his pocket, counting out several bills that his secretary had exchanged for local currency, and gave them to her.
"This money is for miscellaneous expenses along the way, including the purchase of daily necessities, food, and so on. If you feel that something else is needed, there's no need to ask me. Just come to me when you're running low."
He added.
"Oh, thanks."
Sigrid took the money from Lanchi and tucked it into her pocket.
She understood that her last task for the night was to make a trip to the market in Small Stone City, as they had not yet eaten dinner.
Sigrid began to walk towards the exit of the hotel lobby, noticing that Lanchi was also following alongside her.
However, his strides were relaxed, as if he was taking a leisurely stroll, and it seemed that he did not intend to accompany her outside. Instead, he was casually walking alongside her for a short distance, perhaps with something else to instruct her about.
"Tomorrow morning, before and after the repair ceremony, we may come into contact with the grand dukes and priests of the Beastman City-States, as well as other dignitaries. At that time, please be mindful of your choice of words and avoid giving them the impression that you are offending their ancestors and deities."
Lanchi spoke gently, explaining the particulars of tomorrow's work.
"Hmm, like what?"
Sigrid turned to look at Lanchi beside her.
Although she often came to the Beastman City-States, she rarely had the opportunity to interact with the grand dukes and the upper echelons of the city-states, and she was unsure what words might cause offense.
"It's mainly about your choice of words, or more precisely, your way of thinking. You need to maintain respect for things you are unfamiliar with. A casual attitude may pose a risk in tomorrow's setting."
Lanchi reminded her.
"Ugh, it's so troublesome."
She felt like cursing but held back, swallowing the profanity that had reached her lips.
"I never went to school, so I don't understand any of this stuff you're talking about."
Sigrid felt that she could understand each word Lanchi said, but when they were strung together, it gave her a headache.
"If you want to learn, I can teach you."
Lanchi walked elegantly by her side, his hands clasped behind his back.
"No thanks. You're not my teacher, nor are you my parent. There's no need for you to teach me this or that."
Sigrid waved her hands in frustration and shook her head.
"Then I'll just not say anything at all, and that will be the end of it."
With that, she quickened her pace slightly.
"That's a good compromise."
Lanchi finally smiled and agreed.
"... "
"Have you been waiting for me to say that for a long time?"
Sigrid furrowed her brows as she and Lanchi reached the entrance of the Snow Bear Hotel.
She always felt that this guy was trying to manipulate her.
"No."
Lanchi shook his head, his mouth slightly downturned.
"Are you treating me like a fool?"
Sigrid observed Lanchi's expression intently.
"No, of course not."
Lanchi's lips parted slightly, his eyes widening in surprise and confusion at the suggestion.
Seeing Lanchi's natural expression, Sigrid felt a surge of irritation.
"Hmph, my mood has taken a turn for the worse."
Sigrid let out a cold laugh and turned away, leaving Lanchi with those words as she strode through the revolving door of the hotel.
