Chapter 545: Intentions
Chapter 545: Intentions
As the rift gradually stabilized, Fang Zhixin glanced at his watch and said, "The Government Hall and Defense Department should have detected this place by now. Within twenty-five minutes at the latest, someone will arrive. It should be a response squad."
He turned to Yu Lie, "Major Yu, these people will be up to you to handle. Are you up for it?"
Yu Lie's heart gave a cold laugh, but his expression remained unwavering as he replied, "Leave it to me."
Since his reassignment to the Temporary Special Action Committee, he had been granted the authority to take temporary measures, allowing him to use extreme methods during missions without fear of military tribunal repercussions.
In other words, to ensure the success of the mission, any individuals or obstacles encountered could be dealt with as necessary based on the mission's difficulty.
In the case of Chen Bitong, just from what Yu Lie had seen so far, it was clear that the situation had escalated to the point of endangering Central City. Naturally, this was a suitable application of that authority.
Therefore, for the sake of completing the final task, even if it meant killing every last one of them, Yu Lie was capable of doing so.
Fang Zhixin asked, "Major Yu, I've always wanted to ask, why do you admire Teacher Chen so much?"
"Do I need a reason to admire Teacher Chen?" Yu Lie responded like a true fanatic, "Everything Teacher Chen does, isn't it all worthy of admiration? There are too many to count, right?"
"I remember someone from the Constable Guard Corps tried to recruit you, but you refused. Why? Wasn't that a good opportunity?"
Yu Lie's heart skipped a beat, but he showed no sign of concern. "Don't lump me in with those people. Even if they assigned me to the Administration Bureau, it's still better than doing security work."
Fang Zhixin said, "But what we're doing today is somewhat similar to security work."
Yu Lie responded decisively, "If it's for Teacher Chen, I'll do whatever it takes without hesitation."
At that moment, a response squad of about fifty people was swiftly approaching the area, guided by the information markers.
However, just as they were about to enter the designated zone, they encountered several vehicles blocking their path, with a man wearing a top hat standing in front of them, arousing their vigilance.
On their way here, they had faced multiple ambushes from unknown forces, causing significant delays.
A sound came from the interdimensional link, and a document was transmitted, authorizing them to take over the area.
The squad leader glanced at the document, feeling a chill as he recognized the seal from the Administration Bureau.
Despite his inner apprehension, duty called, and he had to confirm in person. So, he got out of the vehicle alone and approached the man in the top hat.
Unexpectedly, the man was quite reasonable. At his request, he produced an ID card and said, "You should leave. The matters ahead are beyond your handling capabilities. This area will be taken over by another department."
Upon confirming that it was indeed the Administration Bureau, the squad leader had no intention of leaving. Although the Administration Bureau was notorious, they were also acting under orders. So, he cautiously said, "Sorry, we need to seek instructions from our superiors."
The man glanced at him and said, "Then go ahead and seek those instructions."
The squad leader didn't contact the Government Hall but immediately reached out to the Defense Department, inquiring about how to handle the situation.
Li Zhuanyuan, the Specialist, received this message and, combined with the previous intelligence, understood that the location was likely where Chen Bitong had gone.
Indeed, this was not something an ordinary response squad could handle.
He instructed, "Have the response squad wait on the outskirts, stay vigilant of any movements inside, and seal off this area. Also, await the arrival of the emergency team."
Upon receiving the formal order, the response squad immediately retreated and set up a perimeter.
Meanwhile, as the response squad halted, in another area, Mr. Chu arrived by car near the designated zone, where they had prepared a base.
In fact, the Committee had similar bases in various areas of Central City. Entering the base, he climbed to a high point and used a telescope to observe the nearly stabilized rift in the distance.
With a cold, stern expression, Mr. Chu said, "Chen Bitong indeed has a problem. This time, we will act before the Administration Bureau, taking the lead in dealing with this person."
He continued, "Old Hu, take your team up there. Can you handle it?"
Old Hu was a nearly two-meter-tall man dressed in black, with broad shoulders and an upper body that formed an inverted trapezoid, giving the impression of a shorter stature.
He wore a pair of black leather gloves and a mask covering only the lower half of his face, his eyes deep-set, and his skin pale. His hair, uncut for a long time, hung down to his neck and back.
In a hoarse voice, Old Hu said, "Boss, we're old acquaintances. I'll take care of him."
Mr. Chu said, "Remember to bring Ah Han with you."
Old Hu didn't object and asked, "Boss, what charges should we list for Chen Bitong's arrest?"
Mr. Chu replied, "A person like Chen Bitong can't bear any charges. Once you handle him, we'll find a suitable reason for his death."
"Understood, Boss."
Old Hu, seeing that there were no further instructions, immediately turned and left.
At this moment, Mr. Chu addressed the four individuals who had been defeated by Yu Lie, "You four, follow Old Hu and take his orders."
"Yes, sir," they said, bowing slightly before following Old Hu upstairs.
After descending the stairs, Old Hu encountered a group of mercenaries waiting there, led by a robust man. Upon seeing Old Hu, he approached and said, "Uncle Hu."
Old Hu glanced at him and said, "Let's go and deal with Chen Bitong." He took the lead, with the two groups quickly following behind.
Before the rift, Chen Bitong stood there, gazing at the flickering light above, lost in thought.
At this moment, he was dressed in a military overcoat, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and a half-face mask. The air currents emanating from the rift were powerful, causing his clothes to flutter, but it was not enough to move him an inch.
Yu Lie glanced at his back a few times. Suddenly, the rift above flickered, as if something was stirring. He couldn't help but become vigilant.
After a short wait, numerous black dots appeared above the rift, followed by a group of unusually large and ferocious flying birds that burst out.
In fact, many small creatures had already emerged, highly aggressive, but they had been dealt with. This batch, however, seemed to be fleeing, paying no heed to anyone as they flew directly into the air.
In a 1619 book, there is no mistake!
Yu Lie immediately realized there might be something behind them.
He focused his gaze on the rift above, and after a while, he saw a dark shadow slowly emerge from behind the rift. Then, a horse with a headgear appeared, its sturdy hooves stepping onto the brick ground outside, emitting a solid, resonant sound.
As the horse moved forward, a tall, fully armored cavalryman slowly came into full view.
Yu Lie was startled. Was this... the cavalry of the former imperial court? Could it be that Chen Bitong had done something to bring the people of the former imperial court here? Was Chen Bitong colluding with the former imperial court?
At this moment, he was unaware of the scene unfolding outside the Ji Yang District, or he would have been even more shocked and vigilant.
However, even if he knew, there was nothing he could do at this moment.
Fang Zhixin asked, "Major Yu, what do you think?"
Yu Lie composed himself and said coldly, "I only acknowledge Teacher Chen himself. Whatever he does, there must be his reasons."
"Major Yu, are you ready?" asked Fang Zhixin.
The cavalryman's face was covered by a face plate, making it hard to discern his features. Only a pair of sharp eyes could be vaguely seen through the cracks in his armor.
After emerging, he pulled on the reins to stop the horse. He first looked at the jade stakes in front, but his gaze slowly shifted to Chen Bitong. After staring for a while, he nodded at him and then extended his hand.
Fang Zhixin took out a metal plate from his bag, and even from its appearance and the cloud and thunder pattern on the side, it exuded a strong classical aura.
He walked forward and handed the item to the cavalryman.
The cavalryman appeared extremely arrogant. Even with Fang Zhixin offering him the item, he didn't dismount immediately. After taking it and examining it, he patted the dragon-nosed horse beneath him, and the horse immediately neighed loudly, a sound that could be heard from several kilometers away.
At that moment, there was movement within the rift again. Another cavalryman emerged, followed by one after another, until twelve of them appeared—a standard squad of the former imperial court's attack cavalry.
Upon seeing the cavalrymen, Fang Zhixin politely nodded at the squad leader in front of him. It seemed as if he was about to leave, but as he turned, he drew a weapon from his waist, and a sharp light flashed across the squad leader's body.
The knight, still holding the metal plate, froze for a moment. But in the next instant, the horse's head and the knight's upper body, from the chest up, slid down from above.
"Attack!" Fang Zhixin shouted simultaneously.
Yu Lie was puzzled, unsure why they seemed friendly one moment and attacked the next. But he had no time to ponder the reason; as Fang Zhixin's shout rang out, he stomped his foot and charged towards one of the cavalrymen.
The cavalrymen did not panic at their squad leader's sudden death. Instead, the front line quickly advanced, assuming an offensive position while providing cover for their teammates retreating towards the rift.
In a flash, Fang Zhixin reached the rift first. He fully extended the weapon in his hand, revealing a nearly two-meter-long, whip-like flexible longsword. With a single swing, he drew several arc-shaped trails of blood.
The cavalrymen who tried to charge at him or those who had passed by him, one by one, had their heads and bodies severed into segments, finally falling to the ground in pieces before the rift.
