Chapter 545: Intentions
Chapter 545: Intentions
As the rift gradually stabilized, Fang Zhixin checked his watch and said, "The situation here should have been detected by the Government Hall and the Defense Department. At the latest, within twenty-five minutes, someone will arrive here, and it should be a response team."
He turned to Yu Lie, "Major Yu, these people will be relying on you to handle the situation. Are you ready?"
Yu Lie gave a cold laugh in his heart, but on the surface, he replied without hesitation, "Leave it to me."
After being reassigned to the Temporary Special Action Committee, he had been granted the authority to temporarily handle special tasks, allowing him to use extreme measures during missions and be exempt from military tribunal accountability afterward.
This meant that to ensure the success of the mission, any individuals or difficulties encountered during the task could be dealt with as necessary based on the task's difficulty.
Regarding Chen Bitong's situation, based on what Yu Lie had seen so far, it was clear that the matter had escalated to a level that threatened the safety of Central City. Naturally, this clause applied.
Therefore, to ensure the completion of the final task, even if it meant killing everyone present, Yu Lie was capable of doing so.
Fang Zhixin asked, "Major Yu, I've always wanted to ask you, why do you admire Teacher Chen so much?"
"Do I need a reason to admire Teacher Chen?" Yu Lie responded like a true fanatic, "Everything Teacher Chen has done, is there anything that isn't worthy of admiration? There are too many to count."
"I remember that someone from the Constable Guard Division once tried to recruit you, but you refused. Why, wasn't that a good opportunity?"
Yu Lie's heart skipped a beat, but he showed no concern on his face. "Don't associate me with those people. Even if I were assigned to the General Bureau, it would be better than doing security work."
Fang Zhixin said, "But what we're doing today is somewhat similar to security work."
Yu Lie responded decisively, "If it's for Teacher Chen, I'll do whatever is needed without question."
At that moment, a response team of around fifty people was swiftly approaching the area, guided by information markers.
However, just as they were about to enter the designated area, they encountered several vehicles blocking their path, with a man wearing a top hat standing in front of them. This aroused their vigilance.
Throughout their journey, they had been ambushed by unknown forces multiple times, causing significant delays.
But a sound came from the interdimensional connector, and a document for taking over that area was transmitted.
The team leader took a look and felt a chill. The document was stamped by the General Bureau.
Despite his inner apprehension, he had a duty to fulfill. He had to confirm the situation in person, so he got out of the vehicle and approached the man in the top hat.
Unexpectedly, the man was quite reasonable. Upon his request, the man showed his ID card and said, "You should leave. The matter ahead is beyond your handling capabilities. This area has been taken over by another department."
After confirming that the man was indeed from the General Bureau, the team leader did not intend to leave immediately. Although the General Bureau was notorious, they were also following orders. So, he cautiously said, "Sorry, we need to seek instructions from our superiors."
The man glanced at him and said, "Then go ahead and seek those instructions."
The team leader did not contact the Government Hall but immediately reached out to the Defense Department, inquiring about how to handle the situation.
Specialist Liang received this message and, combined with the previous intelligence, deduced that the location in question was likely where Chen Bitong had gone.
Indeed, this was not a task that an ordinary response team could handle.
He instructed, "Have the response team wait outside, remain alert to any movements within, and block off this area. Also, coordinate with the emergency team that will arrive shortly."
Upon receiving the formal order, the response team immediately retreated and deployed on the spot.
Meanwhile, on another road, Mr. Chu arrived by car near the designated area, where they had prepared a base in advance.
In fact, the Committee had similar bases in various areas of Central City. After entering, he climbed to a higher vantage point and used a telescope to observe the nearly stabilized rift in the distance.
With a cold and stern expression, Mr. Chu said, "Chen Bitong is indeed problematic. This time, we will act before the General Bureau and take the initiative to eliminate this person."
He continued, "Lao Hu, take your team up there. Can you handle it?"
Lao Hu was a nearly two-meter-tall man wearing a black coat. However, his shoulders were broad, and his upper body formed an inverted trapezoid, giving the impression of a shorter stature.
He wore a pair of black leather gloves and a mask that covered only the lower half of his face. His eye sockets were deep-set, and his skin was pale. He was hatless, with stiff and disheveled hair that fell down his neck and back.
In a hoarse voice, Lao Hu said, "Boss, we're old acquaintances. I'll take care of him."
Mr. Chu said, "When you go, remember to bring Ah Han with you."
Lao Hu did not object and asked, "Boss, what charges should we put on Chen Bitong's arrest warrant?"
"Mr. Chu said, 'A man like Chen Bitong cannot bear any criminal charges. After you deal with him, we will find a suitable reason for his death.'
'Understood, boss.'
Seeing that Mr. Chu had nothing more to say, Lao Hu immediately turned and left.
Mr. Chu then turned to the four men who had been defeated by Yu Lie and said, 'You four, follow Lao Hu and take his orders.'
'Yes, sir,' the four men bowed slightly and followed Lao Hu upstairs.
After Lao Hu left, a squad of mercenaries remained, led by a burly man. Seeing Lao Hu, he approached and said, 'Uncle Hu.'
Lao Hu glanced at him and said, 'Let's go. We're going to deal with Chen Bitong.' He took the lead, with the two squads quickly following behind.
Before the rift, Chen Bitong stood there, gazing at the flickering light above, lost in thought.
He was dressed in a military overcoat, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and had a half-face mask covering his face. The air currents from the rift were powerful, but they only fluttered his coat tails without moving him an inch.
Yu Lie glanced at Chen Bitong's back a few times. Suddenly, the rift above flickered, as if something was happening. Yu Lie became alert.
After a short wait, numerous black dots appeared above the rift, and then a group of unusually large, fierce-looking birds burst out.
In fact, many small organisms had already emerged, highly aggressive, but they had been dealt with. This batch was different; they seemed to be fleeing, paying no attention to anyone, and flew straight into the air.
Yu Lie immediately realized there might be something behind them.
He focused his gaze on the rift and waited. Soon, a dark shadow slowly emerged from behind the rift, followed by a horse with a masked head, its sturdy hooves stepping onto the brick and stone ground outside, making a solid thudding sound.
As the horse walked forward, a tall, fully armored cavalryman gradually came into view.
Yu Lie was shocked. Was this... the old imperial court's cavalry? Could it be that Chen Bitong had done something to bring the old imperial court's forces here? Did Chen Bitong have connections with the old imperial court?
At this moment, he was unaware of what was happening outside the Ji Yang District, or he would have been even more shocked and vigilant.
However, even if he knew, there was nothing he could do about it now.
Fang Zhixin spoke up, 'Major Yu, what do you think?'
Yu Lie composed himself and replied coldly, 'I only acknowledge Teacher Chen himself. Whatever he does, there must be a reason for it.'
'Major Yu, are you ready?' Fang Zhixin asked.
The cavalryman's face was covered by a face mask, making it hard to see his features, but a pair of sharp eyes could be glimpsed through the slits in his helmet.
After emerging, he pulled on the reins to stop his horse. He first glanced at the iron stakes in front, then his gaze slowly shifted to Chen Bitong. After staring for a moment, he nodded at Chen Bitong and extended his hand.
Fang Zhixin took out a metal plate from his bag, adorned with cloud and thunder patterns, exuding a strong classical style.
He walked forward and handed the object to the cavalryman.
The cavalryman was extremely arrogant. Even when Fang Zhixin handed him the item, he didn't dismount. He took the plate, glanced at it, then patted the dragon-nosed horse under him. The horse immediately let out a shrill whinny that could be heard for several kilometers.
At that moment, there was movement within the rift again. Another cavalryman emerged, followed by a continuous stream of riders until twelve of them had appeared—a standard old imperial court attack squad.
After seeing the cavalrymen, Fang Zhixin nodded politely at the squad leader as if about to leave. But as he turned, he smoothly drew a weapon from his waist and a flash of light streaked past the squad leader.
The cavalryman, still holding the metal plate, paused for a moment. Then, the horse's head and the upper half of the cavalryman's body slid down from above.
'Attack!' Fang Zhixin shouted.
Yu Lie was perplexed. Why had they been friendly one moment and then suddenly attacked the next? But there was no time to ponder the reason. At Fang Zhixin's shout, Yu Lie sprang into action, dashing towards one of the cavalrymen.
The cavalrymen didn't panic at their leader's sudden death. Instead, the front squad quickly advanced, forming an offensive formation while covering their retreating comrades moving towards the rift.
With a flash, Fang Zhixin reached the rift first. He fully extended his weapon, revealing a nearly two-meter-long, whip-like longsword. With a single swing, he drew several circular arcs of blood.
Those who tried to charge at him or pass through him ended up with their heads and bodies severed, falling to the ground in pieces before the rift.
