Chapter 54: Harvest Day
Chapter 54: Harvest Day
"Yes, I encountered it when it was still a Caterpie." Naoki explained, "Later, it evolved into a Metapod, and it's been waiting here for its next evolution ever since."
"Evolution..." Yosuke recalled the information he had read before and said, "If I remember correctly, Metapod is one of the fastest-evolving Pokemon. When did it evolve from Caterpie to Metapod?"
Naoki thought for a moment, "About half a month ago."
"Oh." Yosuke replied, "Then it won't be long now. It should evolve into a Butterfree in just a few days! Hmm, Butterfree can spread pollen and feed on nectar, which would also be a great help with your ranch work!"
Fast growth, suitability for beginners, and ease of training—these were the advantages of Bug-type Pokemon.
However, there were also some drawbacks.
For example, their lifespans were typically shorter than those of their trainers.
Many trainers would choose Bug-type Pokemon as their starter Pokemon, and often felt sad when they passed away.
But, birth, aging, sickness, and death were all part of life, a process that both humans and Pokemon went through.
With that in mind, Yosuke clicked his tongue in realization.
Naoki stepped forward to check on the Metapod's condition, reaching out to touch its hard, green shell.
Compared to half a month ago, the shell had become even harder, and its color had transformed from light green to a deep shade of green.
These were all signs that the Metapod was about to evolve.
A Butterfree...
Naoki thought to himself, hoping for the Metapod's swift evolution. With that, the ranch would become even livelier.
The Metapod was at a crucial stage of its evolution, and the hardness of its shell prevented it from moving or eating. It relied solely on the nutrients stored in its body from its Caterpie days to renew its cells.
During this process, no external force could help it; it had to break out of its shell on its own to become a Butterfree that could soar through the skies.
The two of them went inside, and Naoki poured Yosuke a cup of tea before heading out to tend to the farm.
Seeing him start work, Golurk, who had been waiting nearby, immediately ran over to help. Soon, they were joined by Lycanroc and Haxorus, who were eager to lend a paw or a claw.
Yosuke stepped out as well, looking at the vast stretch of land before him with a sense of anticipation. "I'd like to help too!" he exclaimed.
"This work is quite demanding," Naoki replied with a slight raise of an eyebrow, offering a gentle reminder.
Yosuke had never done farm work before. His hometown was a modern metropolis called Kiangan City, located in the northern region of Galar.
But that didn't deter him from wanting to experience life on a ranch.
Seeing his enthusiasm, Naoki didn't discourage him.
Yosuke reached into his pockets and pulled out four Poke Balls.
With a flash of white light, a Dewott, a Centiskorch, a Galarian Corsola, and a Beartic appeared on the ranch, ready for action.
"Everyone, let's help Naoki with the harvest!" Yosuke declared.
With that, the four Pokemon joined the ranks of the harvesters.
Before long, piles of turnips, potatoes caked with soil, garlic cloves, chubby white radishes, glistening cucumbers, and plump, juicy tomatoes formed small mountains beside the fields.
By the time they finished harvesting all the ripe crops, both the humans and Pokemon were covered in dirt.
As the last cucumber was plucked, Yosuke plopped down on the grass, exclaiming, "Whew, ranch work is tough!"
In comparison, Naoki had much better endurance, perhaps due to his long hours of working. He didn't collapse immediately.
He thanked Yosuke and his Pokemon for their help and said with a smile, "You've all done a great job. Take a break while I prepare lunch!"
"Yay!"
Yosuke and his Pokemon cheered in unison.
There was fried pork cutlet and rice, along with three new dishes Naoki created using the freshly harvested crops.
One was a simple cucumber dish, another was tomato and scrambled eggs, and the last was a spicy and fragrant boiled meat dish. Naoki had sliced the pork loin, adding chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, ginger, scallions, and other ingredients to create a mouthwatering masterpiece.
The finished dish was a sight to behold, with tender meat, fresh vegetables, and a bright red broth. The spicy and numbing aroma filled the air, and the meat slices glistening with chili oil looked incredibly tempting.
Naoki couldn't help but swallow his saliva, and as he lowered his head, the information for the three dishes appeared.
[Cucumber Salad (D)
: A simple and easy-to-make basic dish, perfect for cooling off during the summer. Cooking Effect: Endurance against heat, Level 1.]
[Tomato and Scrambled Eggs (C)
: A homely dish with a sweet and sour blend of flavors. The tenderness of the eggs and the unique texture of the tomatoes create a perfect fusion. Cooking Effect: Increases appetite.]
[Boiled Meat Slices (B)
: Delicious boiled meat slices with a spicy, fragrant, and numbing flavor. One bite will have you breathing fire. Cooking Effect: Fireburst.]
Hmm?
Naoki's gaze shifted to the boiled meat dish.
The next second, the specific contents of the cooking effect appeared.
[Fireburst: Fire-attribute Pokemon exclusive. For a short period, moderately increases the internal fire-attribute energy and slightly enhances comprehension of fire-attribute moves.]
This is...
Naoki was slightly taken aback.
Just then, Yosuke, enticed by the aroma, rushed in, too hungry to care about his exhaustion.
"What's that smell? It's amazing!"
When he laid eyes on the boiled meat dish, his mouth immediately began to water.
"What dish is this?"
Naoki: "Er... it's called boiled meat slices."
"Boiled meat slices?" Yosuke was curious, having never heard of or seen this dish before.
Naoki didn't offer much explanation. With so many people, there wasn't enough space inside, so he instructed Golurk to move the table outside and then brought out the prepared dishes.
The surrounding Pokemon were instantly attracted by the overpowering aroma.
Naoki clearly saw Yosuke's Flash Cannon's throat move as it desperately swallowed its saliva.
"Let's eat!"
Yosuke picked up his cutlery and dug in.
Naoki secretly observed the only Fire-attribute Pokemon present, Flash Cannon.
It picked up its cutlery, likely taught to it by Yosuke, and took a bite of the boiled meat slice coated in chili oil.
After chewing a couple of times, its face turned bright red.
The fire-attribute energy within its body surged, and Flash Cannon's eyes widened as it puffed out its cheeks, seemingly enduring something.
After a few seconds, it seemed to have reached its limit, and it abruptly lifted its head. The next second, a scorching beam of red-hot fire shot into the sky from its mouth.
Yosuke: "?!”
A moment later, Flash Cannon lay on the grass, panting heavily, completely drained.
"What happened to you, Flash Cannon?!" Yosuke asked anxiously.
Flash Cannon stuck out its tongue and gently shook its head.
Too... spicy!
Naoki coughed lightly and said, "Perhaps the spiciness stimulated its internal fire-attribute energy, causing it to erupt uncontrollably."
After a pause, Naoki asked, "Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?"
Flash Cannon gradually calmed down and shook its head. Instead of feeling unwell, it felt refreshed and relaxed.
Naoki: "..."
It seemed like Flash Cannon's luck wasn't good this time, as it didn't learn any new moves.
