Chapter 54: Dragon Blood and Bad News
"Yes, I heard from George that Ivan's Transfiguration Spell skills are good enough to take the Owls." Harry couldn't help but interject.
He thought Hermione was already excellent, and if she still complained, he and Ron wouldn't have a chance.
Ivan noticed that Hermione was still not in high spirits and tried to persuade her again.
"It's not good to be so tense before exams. You should balance work and rest and relax a bit. Otherwise, it might affect your performance."
Harry and Ron immediately put down their books and nodded in agreement. They thought Ivan was right; studying all the time was too tiring.
Ivan ignored them and continued.
"Norbert is almost fully trained, and Charlie will be here in a couple of days to take Norbert away. Since it's a holiday today, we can go see him."
For the past week, Hermione had been spending all her time in the library revising, sometimes even forgetting to eat. Ivan wanted to use this opportunity to help her relax.
"No, I don't want to see a dragon. I still need to review Detailed Guide to Basic Transfiguration." Hermione stubbornly shook her head. She wanted to be the best in every class, and Transfiguration was no exception.
In other areas, it was one thing, but in her strongest subject, exams, she didn't want to be outdone by Ivan.
Harry and Ron, on the other hand, had long since put aside the dull History of Magic books and started asking about Dragon Training.
Ivan didn't hide anything and told them about his and Hagrid's experience with Norbert, making sure to keep his voice low enough for Hermione, who was reading, to hear.
Since they were sitting in a corner of the library, as long as they didn't speak too loudly, Ivan wasn't worried about being overheard by others.
When they heard that Norbert had grown larger than a table and could follow commands to jump, flip, and breathe fire, Harry and the others were very excited to see it in person.
Ivan continued, while subtly observing Hermione. The speed at which she turned the pages of her book had noticeably slowed, indicating she was somewhat intrigued.
"Norbert can already fly. Don't you want to try the feeling of riding a dragon?" Ivan pressed his advantage, using his final argument.
"It's so close to the castle. What if someone sees us?" Hermione finally couldn't resist and asked.
"We can go in the evening, fly low, and be careful. We shouldn't be seen", Ivan smiled.
Hermione nodded, instinctively wanting to continue her revision, but after a couple of seconds, she slammed her book shut and glared at Ivan. Her mind was now filled with thoughts of dragons, and she couldn't focus on her revision materials.
A few hours later, Ivan sat on a chair outside Hagrid's hut, lazily giving commands.
"Norbert, jump!"
"Norbert, flip over!"
"Norbert, breathe fire! You're a big boy now, two hundred pounds, and you need to learn to cook your own fish."
On the lawn not far ahead, a large and fearsome Norwegian Ridgeback was happily rolling on the ground, following Ivan's commands and breathing hot flames at the Grill. It then used its sharp-toothed mouth to grab the Grill, flapped its wings, and ran on all fours to Ivan, placing the two Grilled fish in a bowl. After Ivan sprinkled Taste-Enhancing Potion on the fish, the dragon gobbled them up.
Ivan reached out to gently stroke Norbert's large head, feeling a sense of awe. No wonder it was a Fire Dragon; it grew so fast. In just over a month, its size had multiplied several times.
"Wow, that's really cool!" Ron, who had been watching with envy, reached out to try and pet Norbert's wings like Ivan had, while Harry and Hermione also looked envious.
"Don't move!" Ivan suddenly shouted.
Ron's body trembled, startled. When he came to his senses, he was about to say something, but then he noticed Norbert's large head just inches away, with sharp teeth dripping with yellow, murky saliva.
Ron realized that Ivan's warning wasn't directed at him and was so frightened that he fell straight to the ground. Harry quickly rushed over to help him up.
"Hard", Ivan said, tapping Norbert's big head to make him retract his sharp teeth. The hard scales hurt his fist a bit.
"Ivan, didn't you tame it already?" Ron asked, still shaken.
"How long has it been? It's only been a short while. I can only say there's been some initial success", Ivan shook his head. Although Norbert was obedient to him now, this was due to the authority he had established with a combination of discipline and treats.
If Norbert grows larger and realizes that his dragon trainer isn't as powerful as he thought, this relationship could easily crumble.
However, for now, controlling Norbert wasn't a problem. After a series of calming and warning gestures, Ivan said to the group, who were both afraid and eager to pet the dragon:
"You can touch it now."
Ron, who had been scared just a moment ago, was hesitant to approach. Harry, however, was braver and extended his hand.
"Hermione, you should try it too", Ivan said, looking at Hermione, who was hesitating.
Hermione had intended to refuse, as it was too dangerous, but she couldn't resist the temptation to pet the young dragon. She placed her hand on Norbert's head. Although the hard scales felt a bit rough, the little witch was very excited, and her lips curved into a smile.
Despite Norbert's discomfort with the unfamiliar short people touching him, he didn't dare to flap his wings and knock them away because Ivan was right there.
Ivan carefully observed Norbert's expressions and movements during this time, ensuring he wouldn't suddenly attack before relaxing a bit.
Over the past month, using the pretext of Dragon Training, Ivan had successfully collected enough dragon blood. The fusion Potion in the Room of Requirement was already brewed, and all he needed to do was add the dragon blood to complete it.
However, when he thought about the item evaluation he had seen while collecting the dragon blood, Ivan frowned.
Magic Item: Dragon Blood
Description: This is dragon blood extracted from a young Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon. Its activity and magic power are inferior to that of an adult Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon, but it has the same potential.
Although Ivan had anticipated this, he was still somewhat disappointed when he received the information.
Fortunately, the description indicated that the blood of a young Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon had the same potential as an adult, meaning he just needed to spend more time developing it. This reassured Ivan.
He decided to add the dragon blood to the Potion that night.
Just as Ivan was lost in thought, a sharp dog bark suddenly echoed from the Forbidden Forest. Moments later, a large dog, limping and bleeding, ran towards Ivan from the nearby bushes.
