Chapter 539: Seamless Casting
### Chapter 539: Seamless Casting
When Ivan finished the last word, the chair shot forward at an astonishing speed and slammed into the magical barrier created by Protego.
Protego was never particularly effective against physical attacks. After the heavy impact, it held for less than half a second before shattering with a loud bang.
Grace, who had just regained her senses, couldn't avoid the collision in time. She was hit from behind and tumbled across the ground, though she didn't lose her fighting ability, she was left in a rather disheveled state.
"You were too tense, Grace! You focused all your attention on me and neglected the potential risks around you, which is a major taboo in combat!" Ivan pointed out her mistake in battle without hesitation.
Earlier, while watching her duel with the male wizard, Ivan had already noticed that Grace's spellcasting skills were decent, but her combat experience was lacking.
Someone like Sirius Black would never make such a rookie mistake.
However, this wasn't just a problem with Grace; it was a common issue among most wizards in the Wizarding World!
To put it bluntly, as Britain's only school, Hogwarts primarily focuses on teaching students how to use magic to make their lives easier, with a bit of Defense Against the Dark Arts to learn how to counter Dark Magic and handle dark creatures.
Actual wizard duels are rarely covered in class.
This is why, when Lockhart organized the Duel Club, almost all the young witches and wizards in the school participated.
After all, there were very few opportunities for practice otherwise!
While Grace and her group had spent time in Knockturn Alley and experienced some battles, they were essentially self-taught, and their combat techniques were mostly improvised.
This might suffice for everyday use, but when facing powerful wizards, their lack of proper training would easily expose their weaknesses.
Ivan inwardly shook his head. This was perhaps what the Ministry of Magic wanted—Muggle-born wizards with weaker combat abilities were easier to control.
However, Ivan didn't want his subordinates to be in the same situation. He scanned the crowd of onlookers and explained:
"As I mentioned earlier, Protego isn't hard to counter. It can only repel directed spells. If the attack is physical and driven by magic, it's much harder for Protego to be effective!"
"So, if you time your spellcasting well, even a simple Summoning Charm can turn the tide of battle!"
"I'm sure no one here is unfamiliar with the Summoning Charm, right?" Ivan added.
The onlookers laughed at his words. The Summoning Charm was one of the most basic spells, easy to learn, and even underage young wizards could use it with ease.
However, using the Summoning Charm to create an impact that could break through Protego was indeed a novel idea. Few people would think to apply this kind of magic in combat.
As Ivan continued his explanation, Grace had already picked herself up from the ground, her face flushed with embarrassment.
She had hoped to make a good impression on Ivan, but she hadn't anticipated being so easily defeated by a simple Summoning Charm.
This made Grace feel extremely frustrated. It was just a momentary mistake, and she hadn't been able to showcase her true strength at all.
But soon, Grace remembered that she hadn't surrendered, which meant the battle was still ongoing. She looked at Ivan, who was still explaining things without the slightest hint of caution. She gritted her teeth and, with a burst of determination, quickly waved her wand.
"Expelliarmus! (Expelliarmus)"
A crimson beam flashed through the air.
Ivan turned around the moment he heard the sound. Without a hint of panic, he casually waved his wand, and the crimson beam that was inches away from him dissipated into nothingness. He then looked at Grace.
The young witch, who was not much older than a child, was so frightened that she almost couldn't hold her wand steady. Her sudden attack had been a momentary lapse in judgment, driven by a desperate desire to turn the tide. Now, as she calmed down, she realized that her actions had been a serious offense.
Ivan's reaction was unexpected. Instead of reprimanding her, he even praised her.
"Grace did well! Since one side hasn't surrendered, the battle isn't over. If it can lead to victory, an ambush is also a good choice!"
Ivan, of course, wouldn't blame Grace for suddenly attacking. In a fight, any means were allowed, and enemies certainly wouldn't announce their attacks.
"Let's continue!" Ivan said.
Grace let out a slow breath, adjusted her state, and cast a Protego on herself again before launching her attack.
Ivan kept his promise and didn't use any unconventional magic throughout the duel. Even his counters were basic spells.
However, this didn't mean Grace could handle it easily. Ivan combined many small spells, and the resulting power was almost as strong as high-level spells.
He could effortlessly use and counter the magic she cast with every move.
Grace felt that she had only managed to hold on this long because Ivan was deliberately holding back. Her Protego had shattered several times, and each time, Ivan waited for her to recast the protective charm before resuming his attack.
What made Grace even more despairing was that while fighting her, Ivan continued to explain various spells, detailing their characteristics and how to counter them, as if he was only half-focused on the battle.
The emotional turmoil made Grace even more flustered, and she soon exposed a vulnerability.
"Diffindo! (Slicing Spell)" Ivan seized this opportunity and quickly waved his wand.
A magic beam instantly struck Grace, but it was blocked by her Protego.
However, before the spell could be deflected, another crimson beam followed, instantly breaching the limits of her Protego and hitting her directly.
Grace felt as if she had been hit by a raging bull. She was thrown backward, and her wand flew out of her hand, spinning through the air and landing in Ivan's grasp.
The onlookers, who had been watching the duel, burst into applause as Ivan secured his victory.
Although Ivan hadn't used any overwhelmingly powerful spells during the battle, his mastery of basic spells and their combinations was truly eye-opening. The fluidity and grace with which he cast spells were almost artistic.
Anyone could see that achieving such a level of skill wasn't as easy as Ivan made it look. It required an extremely high level of magical control.
