Chapter 539: Desert Tyrant Baby and the Ancient City
Chapter 539: Desert Tyrant Baby and the Ancient City
In the Unova Region, within the Wilderness Scenic Area, a vast desert stretched as far as the eye could see. The sky was obscured by a swirling mass of yellow sand, and the ground was covered in a golden blanket of fine grains. It was as if the entire world had been painted in shades of yellow.
Jinghe and his companions had made their way through Flying Cloud City and now stood at the edge of this desert, ready to venture into its depths.
"Navigation is ready, Rotom!" Rotom exclaimed confidently.
Jinghe, however, remained skeptical. He had experienced Rotom's navigational skills before, which often led them into rivers and seas.
But with the sandstorm raging, it seemed they had no choice but to trust Rotom, at least for now. It had successfully pinpointed the location from Da Ye's phone call.
"Yoji!" exclaimed Tyrogue, brimming with excitement as they entered the desert.
A desert! This was the territory of the Desert Tyrant Baby, and Tyrogue was determined to show its prowess. It stood tall and proud at the forefront, ready to lead the way.
Not only Tyrogue, but Herona's Sharpedo also displayed confidence in this desert terrain. Technically, this was also the domain of the 'Land Dragon', Sharpedo's type.
At least there's Sharpedo, Jinghe thought with relief.
"Let's go," he said, and the three of them, clad in protective sand gear, ventured into the endless desert.
To be honest, when they first entered the desert, Jinghe felt a sense of novelty. This was probably his first time in a desert in both his lives.
However, after walking for a while, the novelty wore off. Everywhere they looked, there was nothing but yellow sand, even in the sky. The scorching heat added to the monotony of the surroundings.
It was then that a disagreement arose.
"Yoji!" Tyrogue pointed confidently at a sand dune ahead, indicating the path they should take.
"No, we should go left, Rotom!" Rotom's navigation suggested they take the left side of the sand dune.
"Hao!" Sharpedo huffed, giving them both a sidelong glance. It exhaled two puffs of white mist from its nose and then pointed to the right.
Right!
Three guides, three directions.
Considering various factors, Jinghe and his companions headed right, towards a small gully between two sand dunes.
Suddenly, the sand in the gully began to shift and swirl, forming miniature whirlpools. The entire sandy ground started to tremble, and before they knew it, a group of Rufflet appeared in their path. Rufflet, Scraggy, and Scrafty!
"Rufflet, the Intimidate Pokemon, is a Ground-type and Dark-type Pokemon with a very aggressive nature. It's known as the 'Sand Tyrant.' If you encounter one in the desert, be extremely cautious!" Rotom's tone carried a hint of schadenfreude.
Jinghe and his companions turned to Sharpedo.
Sharpedo's face turned red with embarrassment. It crossed its arms and averted its gaze.
"Hao!" it grunted.
Tyrogue clenched its tiny fists, having heard Rotom's description clearly.
How dare these Rufflet call themselves the 'Sand Tyrant'? In front of the Desert Tyrant Baby, no less! Sharpedo could tolerate it, but Tyrogue, the Desert Tyrant Baby, would not stand for it!
As Tyrogue spoke, it stomped its foot, and the ground rumbled. A wave-like vibration emanated from where it stood, and a crack appeared beneath its foot.
Stomp?
Sharpedo took a step back, surprised by the force of Tyrogue's stomp. Even the Rufflet across from them were taken aback.
Such strength from a tiny Pokemon!
"Yoji!" Tyrogue boasted, clenching its fists and tilting its head proudly.
The Rufflet glanced at Tyrogue and then at Sharpedo behind it.
"Hao!" Sharpedo narrowed its eyes, its gaze turning fierce.
If they couldn't beat them, they'd better run!
The Rufflet, Scraggy, and Scrafty quickly retreated into the sand, leaving the trio alone.
"Yoji~" Tyrogue boasted, winking at Jinghe.
I'm so brave, right? So brave!
As the Rufflet group left, the sand on both sides of the gully began to collapse, making it impassable.
They turned back, deciding to follow the direction Rotom had initially suggested.
However, as they passed the sand dune Tyrogue had pointed to earlier, the ground shook once more. A massive figure burst out of the thick sand, accompanied by a mighty roar.
"Hao!" A gray, rocky body and robust physique revealed a mighty Onix!
"Yoji!" Tyrogue was furious. A wild Onix had emerged from the sand dune it had chosen, proving its guidance wrong as well. It jumped high into the air and punched the charging Onix with all its might.
Boom!!
The seemingly small object packed a powerful punch, directly knocking the Onix that had burst out of the sand dune onto the ground!
After that hit, Onix was completely dazed.
What just happened?
If it hadn't been for that punch that stunned it, Onix would have thought it was just a tiny bug.
How could such a small creature have so much strength?
More importantly...
Why was the little guy staring at it with such burning intensity?
It was as if he had just seen a delicious meal.
Jinghe's expression was peculiar.
Was Onix going to be delivered right to Tyrogue's doorstep?
But soon, Jinghe remembered something else.
He turned to Herona and Gardelia and said, "You two are in luck."
Huh?
A few minutes later.
Onix, with a teary-eyed look, swiftly weaved through the desert, moving as if it were on solid ground.
It was even faster than its speed on flat terrain.
On its head stood a Tyrogue, a Gramps, and a Rotom Pokedex.
Gramps leaned on Onix's horn, hands on his hips, wearing a pair of windproof goggles, exuding an air of ease.
Tyrogue sat cross-legged in the center of Onix's forehead, surrounded by a pile of minerals, constantly throwing them into his mouth, accompanied by a "crunch, crunch" sound that made Onix break out in a cold sweat.
As for the Rotom Pokedex, it was currently navigating with a sense of self-satisfaction.
"Turn right ahead, watch out for the sand pit, Rotom~!"
Onix obediently followed Rotom's directions.
Meanwhile, Jinghe and his friends were sitting on the largest rock on Onix's back, enjoying the convenience of their new mode of transportation.
Jinghe had suggested getting a "mode of transportation" for the desert, and Onix was proving to be an excellent choice. Not only was it slow enough to feel like a sand yacht, but it also moved smoothly and steadily.
"This is what we call adapting to the local conditions," Jinghe said as he handed freshly squeezed fruit juice to Herona, Gardelia, and Meloetta.
"Melo, Melo~!"
In the past few days with Jinghe, Meloetta had sampled various delicious treats.
Herona stirred the straw in her cup, and the crystal-clear fruit juice, expertly mixed by Jinghe, was sweet and refreshing, especially with the ice cubes from Ice Nine Tails. It was a delightful drink in the desert.
Sipping the juice, Herona relaxed and half-closed her eyes as she spoke, "I heard that in the Unova Region's Wilderness Scenic Area, an ancient capital city lies buried, built thousands of years ago, and a legend related to it is well-known throughout Unova."
"You mean the legend where the two princes represent truth and ideals, and their collision?" Gardelia asked.
Herona nodded; as a mythology scholar, she had also studied some Unova history.
Jinghe took a sip of the fruit juice but remained silent.
In fact, there were numerous versions of the Unova legend involving the black and white dragons and the clash of truth and ideals.
For example, the ancient city they were heading towards was said to be the capital of the two princes' kingdoms, and this desert in the Wilderness Scenic Area was the result of the dragons' clash.
This was why, in some versions, the "Dark Stone," which Zekrom transformed into, was said to be sleeping in the ancient city.
But there were other stories.
Similar to the movie "Victini and the Black/White Heroes: Zekrom/Reshiram," the setting changed to Eindoak, and there was even an incident involving Victini.
Consequently, rumors suggested that the "Light Stone," which Reshiram transformed into, was slumbering within the "Earth Sword" in Eindoak.
However, there were also tales claiming that both the "Light Stone" and the "Dark Stone" were located in the Dragon Spiral Tower.
Just these two versions alone placed the ancient city and Eindoak thousands of years apart in history.
Moreover, Jinghe had even encountered Zekrom, so it seemed unlikely that it was still asleep.
Perhaps Reshiram had also awakened long ago.
With so many versions, Jinghe only had a general understanding of the plot and couldn't make accurate judgments.
In any case, the biggest problem in the ancient city at the moment was a single Fire Moth.
Or perhaps they wouldn't even encounter it.
"Dive ahead, be cautious! Dive ahead, Rotom!" Rotom's prompt came through.
The next second.
A thunderous roar filled the air as the desert's surface seemed to split open, and Onix, with Jinghe and his friends still aboard, plunged into the sand.
"Huff, puff, puff—"
Gramps leaned against the wall, spitting out mouthfuls of sand.
He shot an annoyed glance at the "weak and helpless" Onix and the "attention-seeking" Rotom.
"This navigation is complete. Your destination is below you. Thank you for using Rotom Navigation. Rotom~"
Jinghe and his friends shook the sand from their clothes. If it weren't for their sand-proof suits, they would have been in a similar situation as Gramps after the Onix's sudden dive.
As for Tyrogue, the sand was just a snack. He was still hungry for more.
The Onix cowered in the corner, afraid to move or speak, while Jinghe and his friends surveyed their surroundings.
They found themselves in a dimly lit corridor, with Rotom's Pokedex providing little additional information.
"Bronze Bell, flash!" Gardelia commanded, releasing her Pokemon.
Ding!
The bell's crisp sound accompanied a slight tremor, and its surface emitted a bright light, illuminating the area.
"Is this the Ancient City?" Herona asked, feeling the ancient atmosphere of the corridor's walls.
"Is Da Ye down there? In the depths of the Ancient City?" Jinghe asked Rotom.
"We've lost signal, Rotom!"
Rotom indicated that the signal disappeared upon entering the area.
How could they find Da Ye in such a vast Ancient City? This wasn't the Casual Ruins of Sinnoh's Casual Town, where routes were well-explored and detailed maps existed.
"But, knowing Da Ye's personality..."
Rumbling sounds echoed in the distance.
Jinghe and Herona exchanged glances, both aware of Da Ye's impulsive nature.
Following the noise seemed like the best course of action.
As they walked, they observed their surroundings while searching for Da Ye.
Herona borrowed the Rotom Pokedex to record her observations and findings.
The Ancient City was dilapidated, with some tunnels well-preserved, while others had unstable floors. A misstep on a loose stone could send one plummeting downward.
Some areas had already collapsed, forming downward-flowing sand passages.
Fortunately, the noise Da Ye made continued, growing louder as they ventured deeper.
Finally, after jumping down a sand pit, they reached a more open area with sturdy pillars, revealing an ancient castle.
The inner city of the Ancient City!
And in the distance, they spotted the fiery-haired troublemaker.
"Ooh, ooh, ooh! Flame Monkey, Fire Punch!" Da Ye shouted excitedly, clenching his fists with enthusiasm.
Before him stood a Flame Monkey, its body pulsating with flames, the orange firelight illuminating the area.
At Da Ye's command, the Flame Monkey punched with fiery fists, smashing a rock-like object.
Bang!
The rock shattered under the Flame Monkey's punch, breaking into pieces.
But the scattered stones didn't remain silent. Instead, they emitted a rustling sound, trembling, and reassembled into a humanoid shape.
"Still got some fight left? We can keep this up all day!" Da Ye rubbed his nose, addressing the rock.
"Kuu!"
The Flame Monkey's eyes widened, seemingly unaccustomed to such an opponent.
Jinghe and his friends, witnessing the entire scene, felt a bit...
"Gramps," Jinghe called out softly.
"Hngga~"
Gramps chuckled, disappearing into the shadows.
Moments later, several sharp cries echoed from the corner's shadows, followed by—
Bang, bang, bang!
Three Crushing Coffins were tossed in front of Da Ye and the Flame Monkey.
The Pokemon inside looked bewildered, seemingly surprised at being found and thrown out so quickly. The rock giant, too, crumbled.
"Huh?"
Da Ye and the Flame Monkey exchanged glances, then turned abruptly.
"Teacher Jinghe! Big Sis!" Da Ye exclaimed joyfully.
He ran towards them.
But the next moment—
Woooo—
In the vast space, a strong wind blew, and wails seemed to come from all directions. Ghost-type energy swirled, and dark mist appeared.
"Hngga." Gramps rubbed his chin.
Ghost-type energy?
"Da Ye, what did you do?" Jinghe asked, unable to contain his curiosity.
Why were the Ghost-type Pokemon in the Ancient City so hostile towards him?
"I didn't do anything," Da Ye said, perplexed.
Moreover, wasn't this place always like this?
