Chapter 539: Avengers Battle the Demon (Second Update)
Chapter 539: Avengers Battle the Demon (Second Update)
"Peggy, did you hear me?
Witch can save you. You'll be fine. Whether you want to live again or continue living as you are, Witch can help you."
Steve approached Carter's bedside, holding her hand and gently explained.
However, when Carter heard Steve's words, she smiled and shook her head, using the last of her strength to slowly give her answer:
"Thank you, but Steve, I choose neither. I've had a good life. I've had my children and my family.
What matters is you, Steve. I want you to move on from the past, look forward, and find your own happiness."
"But Peggy, I—"
Steve's voice choked up when he heard that Carter didn't want to continue living. He wanted to persuade her.
However, before he could finish his plea, Carter's hand, which she had raised with great effort, interrupted him by placing it on his cheek:
"Steve, don't try to convince me. This is a decision I made long ago. Even when Nick wanted to use S.H.I.E.L.D.'s biotechnology to help me extend my life, I refused.
One shouldn't be too greedy. I'm already very happy to have seen you again in these last few years before I leave this world. Just stay with me until the end, and that's enough."
"Alright, Peggy. I'll stay with you until the end."
Steve held Carter's hand, clearly deciding to respect her choice.
Jerry, who had been standing beside them, sighed quietly.
It's not something an ordinary person can do—knowing they can reverse aging and return to their youth but still choosing to accept death without hesitation.
At least, Jerry knew he couldn't do it. If he could live, he would want to live forever. He believed there were still many unknown secrets in this world and this universe that needed exploring.
He had much more Magic to learn and higher levels to reach.
However, he respected Carter's choice. Everyone's experiences and thoughts are different, and so are their decisions.
Carter's acceptance of death, Jerry believed, was partly due to her higher moral resolve, and partly because she had moved on from her feelings after Steve's disappearance.
In the Mage Apprentice world, Jerry had seen two TV series specifically about Agent Carter, which were made after Steve was frozen.
Carter did indeed use her work to numb herself for a long time after Steve's disappearance, but she was eventually healed by others, found new love, got married, and had a son and a daughter.
She achieved both career and personal success.
The only regret, perhaps, was not seeing Steve one last time, but now that regret was finally resolved.
So, even if Carter were to return to her youth, she wouldn't be the same Carter from back then, and the possibility of continuing with Steve would be gone.
Carter must have understood this herself.
"Peggy!!!"
After delivering her final words, Carter soon passed away with a smile.
The famous Captain America shed tears for the woman he loved most.
Although Carter was no longer the same Carter, Steve, who had been frozen for seventy years, was still the same Steve. His love for Carter had never changed.
Although Carter is now an elderly woman with white hair.
"Steve, I'm sorry for your loss!"
Half an hour later, when Carter's body was taken away by her niece, Jerry approached Steve, who was still immersed in grief, and offered a few words of comfort.
After composing himself, Steve thanked Jerry:
"Jerry, I'm sorry to have wasted your trip!"
"To be honest, it wasn't a wasted trip. I also found it quite moving."
Jerry shrugged, thinking that this outcome wasn't so bad. After all, in the future, Steve could use the time machine to travel to a parallel universe, to the timeline where he was first frozen. There, he could dance with the Carter who had been waiting for him and live a happy life.
He remembered the movie: after that Carter's passing, Steve returned to the main universe, bringing back the shield from the parallel universe.
Thinking of this, he suddenly remembered the Pym Particles, which could enter the Quantum Realm. That was a valuable resource.
His Time Magic could also take him back in time, as could the Time-Turner, but neither could go back as far as the Pym Particles.
Of course, that wasn't what he was most interested in. What intrigued him was the ability to enter the Quantum Realm using Pym Particles, and he was very curious about the Quantum Realm.
He wanted to explore the Quantum Realm and see if it could help enhance his Magic.
"Steve, have you recently seen someone who can shrink their body to the size of an ant?"
He remembered that, according to the current timeline, Ant-Man should have already visited the Avengers and stolen the Signal Disguiser.
Steve looked at Jerry with some surprise:
"Yes, his name is Scott. He calls himself Ant-Man. He came to the base to steal something and ran into your sister. Your sister used her Enlargement Magic to prevent him from shrinking, and we caught him.
Later, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Tony confirmed that he was a former professor who had resigned from S.H.I.E.L.D. and had come to retrieve a Signal Disguiser he had invented. So, they let him go.
Why do you ask? Do you know him?"
"I don't know him, but I need to talk to him about something."
Jerry smiled but didn't elaborate further.
Steve didn't press the issue, only reminding him:
"Tony has all the information on Scott. He's planning to invite him to join the Avengers. If you need to find him, you can ask Tony for his contact information."
Jerry nodded, then said a few more words to Steve before teleporting back to the villa in New York.
The Quantum Realm wasn't urgent. Dr. Pym probably hadn't yet invented the machine that could safely enter the Quantum Realm to rescue his wife.
First, he needed to finish the charade in two days, then go to Wakanda to get some Vibranium, and use the Uru Metal Thor brought back from Asgard to upgrade the twelve sets of Golden Armors.
The next day, Jerry went to London again to attend Carter's funeral.
The following day, the highly anticipated world war between the Avengers and the Abyssal Demons finally began as planned.
