Chapter 538: The Progenitor Appears, Arceus' Trial!
Chapter 538: The Progenitor Appears, Arceus' Trial!
Poni Island, Seafolk Village, 3:00 PM.
In search of Kapu-Fin, Naoki arrived at this seaside town in the southwestern part of Poni Island with Golurk.
The town, true to the Alolan style, was unlike any conventional settlement—Seafolk Village turned out to be a massive wooden ship!
At the center stood a lush green tree, its trunk seamlessly integrated with the architecture, its verdant canopy shading a small portion of the vessel.
Numerous ports extended outward from both sides of the ship, with several peculiarly shaped vessels moored at their ends.
There were Agantis ships, Bruxish ships, Magikarp ships, and Barbacle ships...
It was the afternoon, and the locals relaxed leisurely around the town while children aged around four or five played and chased each other.
The sky was clear, and the sea sparkled in the warm sunshine. The calls of Wingull echoed from a distance, and wave after wave of ripples formed on the shimmering water, gently lapping against the shore.
The air was filled with a leisurely and tranquil atmosphere, as if this place were a utopia.
"What a beautiful place!" Naoki couldn't help but exclaim.
At this time, many places in the Alola region, besides Melemele Island, remained untouched and retained their traditional way of life.
As Naoki and Golurk ventured into the town, they witnessed the locals and Pokemon greeting each other with "Alola," immediately immersing them in the unique local culture.
The village was small, and most residents knew each other. The sudden appearance of a stranger, therefore, drew curious glances their way.
Some bold and friendly locals even took the initiative to greet Naoki.
"Alola! Are you a foreigner?"
Naoki turned to the girl who had spoken. She wore traditional Alolan clothing, her skin tanned from the sun, and her big eyes sparkled with curiosity as she looked at him.
He smiled and nodded, "Alola, yes."
Hearing this man speak their greeting, the girl became even more surprised.
Naoki raised an eyebrow at her reaction and asked, "Isn't this the customary greeting in the Alola region?"
"Yes, it is!" The girl nodded. "You've learned it too, Alola!"
"Alola!" Naoki repeated.
He knew that in Alola, this phrase was a way of saying "hello."
Golurk, standing beside him, tried to imitate the greeting, "Agas!"
The girl giggled at the Pokemon's attempt, her heart warming to the man and his Pokemon. She enthusiastically invited them, "This is your first time in our Seafolk Village, isn't it? If you'd like, let me show you around!"
"Huh? Really?" Naoki was delighted by the locals' warmth.
"Of course!" The girl introduced herself. "My name is Chylari, and I'm an Eevee expert! Come on!"
"Then I'm in your care!" Naoki smiled, grateful for the offer as he was completely unfamiliar with the area.
Following Chylari, he began his tour of the village.
She pointed to the northwest, toward a Bruxish-shaped vessel, and explained, "That's the town's restaurant! You can bring your Pokemon there for dinner in the evening. They serve delicious seafood noodles!"
"The Agantis ship next to it is a gathering place for Trainers. The ship's body is as hard as steel, so many Trainers often come here to battle their Pokemon!"
Naoki listened with interest. Then, noticing the Magikarp ship on the other side, he asked, "What about that ship over there?"
Chylari turned to look in that direction and replied, "That's the village's ferry terminal. The Magikarp ship on the east side can take you to Heahea City, Konikoni City, and the Thrifty Megamart, while the ship on the west side goes to Eggbember Island!"
"I recommend a trip to Eggbember Island. It's an untouched islet off the coast of Poni Island and a special conservation area of Alola. The island is home to many adorable Eggs and Alolan Eggbember trees!"
Alolan Eggbember trees... those were Grass- and Dragon-type Pokemon.
They would be perfect for Dudu, Naoki thought.
The village was small, so it didn't take long for Chylari to finish introducing the famous sites and facilities.
She turned and asked innocently, "But, big brother, why have you come here?"
"Me?" Naoki smiled. "Actually, I'm here for the Island Challenge, but since Poni Island doesn't seem to have an Island King yet, I plan to find the guardian deity, Kapu-Fin, and receive a trial from it."
Upon hearing this, Chylari covered her mouth in surprise. "The Island Challenge? Big brother, you're amazing!"
Naoki was puzzled. "What's so amazing about that?" He recalled that children from the Alola region could participate in it too!
Chylari replied with admiration, "Because only very skilled Trainers can take on the Island Challenge! They get to battle the Island Guardians, earn Z-Rings and Z-Moves, and gain the recognition of the Island Kings!"
Naoki thought about this carefully upon hearing her words and realized that it was indeed true.
Just like challenging Gyms and collecting badges, not everyone could pass the Gym challenges.
"However, as long as you're diligent and give it your all, even if you can't defeat the Island Guardians, your spirit will surely gain their acknowledgment." Naoki said.
"Mhm!" Chylari nodded happily, then volunteered, "Big brother, do you want to find the guardian deity, Kapu-Fin? In that case, let me help you! Let's go to the elder; he must know where Kapu-Fin lives!"
As she spoke, Chylari pulled Naoki and ran to a wooden hut in the center of the village.
She tiptoed and knocked on the door. "Elder Heisen, there's a guest here to see you!"
Soon, the door opened, and a bald elder with a thick white beard under his nose stepped out.
"What is it, little Chylari?"
Chylari said, "This big brother here has come to take part in the Island Challenge, and he wants to find our guardian deity, Kapu-Fin, to complete the guardian deity's trial!"
"What? The Island Challenge?" The elder was shocked and quickly looked at the man beside him.
Naoki showed him his Island Challenge Certificate. "This is my proof of participating in the Island Challenge. I've completed the trial of Melemele Island."
The elder took the certificate and glanced at it, then said with difficulty, "But... there isn't an Island King on Poni Island yet, and the guardian deity hasn't appeared in a long time..."
The Island King was chosen by the guardian deity, but ever since the previous Island King passed away, Kapu-Fin had never shown itself in the town again.
"Ah? What do we do then?" Chylari worriedly asked.
The elder thought carefully and then provided a possible location for Kapu-Fin.
"However, there's a Ruins of Abundance in the southeast corner of Poni Island, a place used to worship the guardian deity, which people in the past called the Land of Life's End. You can go take a look there. A few days ago, there were tourists who spotted the guardian deity nearby. Maybe the guardian deity will sense your intentions and appear."
Ruins of Abundance? Having received a clue about Kapu-Fin's whereabouts, Naoki nodded and then expressed his gratitude to Chylari and the elder.
"Thank you very much, Elder Heisen, and Chylari, thank you for showing me around the village. These are specialties from my hometown as a token of my appreciation!"
Naoki took out several bottles of Life Milk and Energy Blocks from his backpack and gave them to the elder.
"Goodbye!"
Chylari stared blankly at the gifts in her arms. Before she could recover from her surprise, she saw that Naoki had already left with his Pokemon.
Poni Island, east of Poni Gauntlet.
Following the map app's navigation, Naoki smoothly arrived at the ancient ruins where Kapu-Fin was worshipped.
He calmly looked around but did not find any trace of Kapu-Fin.
Naoki carefully recalled what he knew about Kapu-Fin.
As far as he knew, Kapu-Fin, unlike Kapu-Riki, did not like Pokemon battles. It cared deeply for the land of Poni Island, and whenever anyone engaged in activities that harmed the land, it would immediately punish them.
In the anime, Satoshi and Kagetomo angered Kapu-Fin by having a Pokemon battle at the Ruins of Abundance, which destroyed the land.
Thinking of this, an idea immediately popped into Naoki's mind.
That's it!
Since Pokemon battles could attract Kapu-Fin's attention, he would use this method to lure it out!
Naoki immediately took out a Poke Ball from his pocket.
A flash of white light appeared, and Barbudo's figure emerged in the ruins, looking confused at its surroundings. "Barbu?"
For this trip, Naoki had only brought with him Golurk, Barbudo, Flygon, and his riding goat Pokemon. The rest were sunbathing back at the ranch.
"Barbudo, let's have a battle with Golurk!" Naoki said.
Upon hearing this, Barbudo and Golurk were both stunned.
"Barbu?!"
"Agas?!"
"Of course, I'm not asking you to really fight. I just want you to put on a show and lure out the Pokemon named Kapu-Fin!" Naoki whispered, "Be careful and try to use low-power moves to avoid damaging this place."
The two Pokemon immediately understood Naoki's plan.
"Barbu..." Barbudo breathed a sigh of relief.
Golurk also looked enlightened.
"Then, let's begin!" Naoki said.
"Barbu!"
"Agas!"
Barbudo and Golurk immediately started an imitation Pokemon battle, full of dramatic gestures.
Barbudo swung his small hammer and charged forward vigorously, while Golurk assumed a serious expression and met him with a clenched right fist.
The two Pokemon collided, creating a loud "boom."
Golurk and Barbudo exchanged a quick glance, signaling each other.
The next second, a bolt of yellow electricity arced from Barbudo's body, enveloping Golurk.
"Agas!" Golurk cried out in feigned pain.
However, the electricity was all show and no substance. Barbudo's Electric-type attack was only ten volts strong and couldn't possibly harm Golurk.
Seeing Golurk's exaggerated reaction, Barbudo muttered under his breath, "Barbu..."
Golurk roared and turned to use "Close Combat" on Barbudo, sending him flying.
Golurk used minimal force, and Barbudo quickly stabilized his flight path, but then he remembered Naoki's instructions and dramatically tumbled backward, landing with an exaggerated expression of pain on his face and emitting a cry of agony.
"Barbu!"
Golurk: "...Agas." Will you stop already?!
Naoki glanced at the two Pokemon putting on a show and then turned his attention to their surroundings.
At first, everything seemed normal.
But as the mock battle between Golurk and Barbudo intensified, a thin veil of mist began to form around the ruins.
Kapu-Fin had taken the bait!
"Excellent," Naoki thought to himself, satisfied. He then instructed the two Pokemon, "Keep it up!"
From a hidden corner, Kapu-Fin watched with growing anger as the two Pokemon desecrated the land it cherished.
Such behavior warranted punishment!
"Fin-fin!"
Kapu-Fin let out an angry cry.
In an instant, the air became thick with mist, which continued to spread until it enveloped the entire ancient ruins.
"Golurk! Barbudo!"
In the blink of an eye, the surroundings were completely obscured by the white mist, and Naoki immediately called out to the two Pokemon, beckoning them to his side.
However, something strange happened. Despite being only a few meters apart, Naoki received no response from either Golurk or Barbudo!
His heart sank as he dashed in their direction, but even after searching for three minutes, he couldn't find any trace of the two Pokemon.
Instead, a door emanated a faint glow appeared in front of him.
Naoki: "?"
At that moment, Kapu-Fin, who had been manipulating the mist, suddenly sensed an overwhelming presence.
The mist it had summoned was spiraling out of control!
Kapu-Fin's eyes widened in surprise, and it clearly felt that some unknown force had intervened.
"Fin-fin..." Kapu-Fin couldn't believe what it was seeing as it looked down at its hands.
Just then, a majestic and genderless voice echoed in its ears.
"There is no need for alarm. Leave this place to me."
"Fin-fin?!" Kapu-Fin spun around, searching for the source of the voice.
"I am here." The voice sounded again.
Kapu-Fin turned to its right and saw a majestic figure bathed in sacred light.
Infinite power emanated from its body, and the radiance it exuded was so holy that it compelled one to bow in reverence.
In that instant, Kapu-Fin felt as though it had glimpsed the Light-Eating Creator, Necrozma, from a million years ago!
However, the aura this being exuded was markedly different from that of the Light-Eating Creator...
Kapu-Fin couldn't help but ask, "Fin-fin?" (Who are you?)
Arceus didn't turn, but its voice resonated in the air:
"I am Arceus, the creator of this world."
