Chapter 534: The Full Celebration of Lili'uokalani Town, the Start of the Forest Trial!
Chapter 534: The Full Celebration of Lili'uokalani Town, the Start of the Forest Trial!
Alola Region, Melemele Island, Lili'uokalani Town.
Nestled within the vast expanse of tropical rainforest, this small town had a scattering of houses connected by winding country lanes, with palm trees lining the roads for a scenic touch.
At the town center stood a stage constructed from wooden planks, adorned with white totem-like patterns that exuded a primitive charm.
Beside the stage, large bonfires blazed brightly, their dancing flames adding to the festive atmosphere.
Were it not for the modern-dressed people around him, Naoki would have thought he had stepped into an ancient tribal settlement.
"So this is Lili'uokalani Town?" Naoki wondered aloud as he strolled through the town with Golurk by his side. They didn't stand out much among the crowd of trainers with their Pokemon partners—from Lycanroc to Oricorio, and even a Kommo-o.
It was around dusk, when weary workers would typically head home to prepare dinner. Yet, curiously, the residents of Lili'uokalani Town and these trainers seemed to be gathering at the town center.
"Let's follow and see what's happening, Golurk!"
"Agas!"
Weaving their way through the crowd, the duo soon reached the base of the stage.
As dusk bathed the land in a golden glow, several individuals clad in primitive attire and wearing odd masks with intricate patterns, their necks adorned with tooth necklaces, suddenly appeared on the stage. They began a vigorous and peculiar dance in the light of the setting sun and the bonfires.
At first, Naoki was perplexed by this unexpected turn of events. But then, as he studied the patterns on the dancers' masks, a name suddenly sprang to mind.
—Kapu-Kokeko! He now knew exactly where he was!
This was the celebration stage of Lili'uokalani Town, the very place where the guardian deity of Melemele Island, Kapu-Kokeko, was revered! In the game, the townspeople held a grand celebration here at dusk on certain days to honor Kapu-Kokeko.
Through this ceremony, they sought the deity's continued blessings and a mutually beneficial relationship.
As the dance concluded, an elderly woman with white hair and a stooped posture, dressed in traditional ethnic clothing, slowly made her way onto the celebration stage. She began to hum an ancient, melodious tune before officially commencing the ritual.
"Oh guardian deity of the island, please continue to bless and protect the people living here as you have done in the past! Please accept our humble offerings, and witness the Pokemon battle we present to you!"
With those words, two trainers stepped onto the stage, each commanding their Pokemon to engage in an intense battle.
Naoki, having arrived at just the right time, found himself intrigued by this unique ceremony honoring Kapu-Kokeko.
"I wonder if Kapu-Kokeko is watching from somewhere nearby," he mused.
He glanced around, searching for any signs of the deity in hidden spots, but unfortunately, his efforts proved fruitless.
The Alola region stood out from others due to the abundance of legendary Pokemon that called it home.
Aside from Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma, there was the Kapu family, each ruling over one of the four islands: Kapu-Kokeko of Melemele Island, Kapu-Tetefu of Akala Island, Kapu-Bulubu of Ula'ula Island, and Kapu-Kapu of Poni Island.
The Kapu family differed from other legendary Pokemon in certain respects. For one, they lived alongside humans on the islands and would even appear before select individuals, choosing them.
In the Alola region, those chosen by a guardian deity would become the Island King or Island Queen of their respective land.
Furthermore, one could not refuse this honor without incurring the wrath of the deity.
Naoki's destination on this journey was none other than the Island King of Melemele Island—Hala. Only the Island King possessed the authority to initiate the Island Challenge, and upon completing the trials set by him, one could earn the Z-Ring and Z-Crystal.
Back at the celebration stage, the Pokemon battle was drawing to a close.
As one Pokemon fell to the ground, the fierce battle concluded.
A stout, dark-skinned man with white hair and a cheerful demeanor strode onto the stage, clapping his hands together.
"What a splendid battle! I'm sure the guardian deity is delighted!"
Hala applauded the two young trainers, a broad smile on his face.
The trainers, though slightly embarrassed, couldn't hide their excitement.
Night fell, casting the entire Alola region into darkness.
Hala, accompanied by the two trainers, addressed the gathered townspeople, "Alright, today's celebration has come to a successful close. It's getting late, so everyone should head back and get some rest!"
Kapu-Kokeko never made an appearance, and although the onlookers couldn't hide their disappointment, they had no choice but to disperse.
Hala bade everyone farewell with a smile, and just as he turned to head home, a voice called out to him.
"Wait, Mr. Hala!"
Hala turned to see a young man, taller than him, approaching with a Pokemon by his side that Hala didn't recognize.
Hala paused, "And who might you be?"
"I'm Naoki," Naoki introduced himself. "I'd like to request your guidance in commencing my island challenge."
Five minutes later, in Hala's residence...
The Island King Hala held a cup of tea in his hand as he appraised the young man before him.
"So, you wish to participate in our Alola region's island challenge?"
"Yes, here is my Island Challenge Credential," Naoki placed the credential he had obtained earlier at the Royal Dome on the wooden tea table in front of him.
Hala took the credential and examined it closely, confirming that it was indeed an authentic Island Challenge Credential.
Usually, these credentials were issued to outsiders. In the Alola region, there were multiple ways to obtain such a credential.
For instance, one could earn the recognition of an Island King or Queen, who would then bestow the credential upon the trainer, marking the start of their island challenge.
Alternatively, it could be awarded to those who made significant contributions to the Alola region.
As for local trainers, they were automatically qualified to participate in the island challenge from birth.
"I see! It seems we have yet another talented youngster!" Hala exclaimed with a hearty laugh.
He continued, "Allow me to introduce myself formally. I am Hala, the Island King of Melemele Island. Since you've chosen to begin your challenge on Melemele Island, it falls to me to present you with the trial for this island!"
"However, it's quite late now, so how about this! Come back here tomorrow at 8 in the morning, and I will announce the details of the trial for Melemele Island."
"Alright," Naoki nodded politely and thanked Hala before taking his leave.
That night, Naoki did not return to Paniola Town. Instead, he spent the night at the ranch on Akala Island.
The next morning, as the sun rose above the horizon, Naoki arrived punctually in Lili'uokalani Town.
Hala was already waiting for him.
Well-rested after a good night's sleep, Hala greeted Naoki with a smile, "Your timing is impeccable! Something has come up on Melemele Island, specifically in the forest near Hau'oli City, where there's a Pokemon Cafe."
"According to reports from nearby Pokemon and residents, the cafe has recently run into some problems and has had to suspend its business, causing quite a bit of inconvenience. I hope you can go there to investigate and help resolve the issue."
"This will be the trial I set for you!"
Pokemon Cafe in the forest...
Wasn't that a location from the anime? Although it was called a cafe, the owner was actually a Pokemon named Oranguru.
This Oranguru was very intelligent. It would serve drinks to customers and listen to their complaints, helping them solve their problems.
Speaking of which, the Pokemon Ranch and the World Tree Tavern on his ranch were both inspired by this very Pokemon Cafe!
Could it be that the cafe has stopped operating? Did something happen to the Oranguru?
After a brief moment of contemplation, Naoki nodded, "Alright, I'll go take a look."
Hala smiled, his eyes narrowing, "Then it's all up to you."
The distance between Hau'oli City and Lili'uokalani Town wasn't very far.
Mounted on Golurk, with Rotom-Phone's navigation, Naoki reached the forest in less than five minutes.
Naoki had expected to spend quite some time searching for the forest cafe, but to his surprise, the Pokemon Cafe in the Forest had its own landmark on the map app! All he had to do was select "Go There," and the Rotom-Phone would automatically navigate him to the destination.
Naoki was amazed. He tapped on the landmark, and a line of text popped up on the screen.
[Pokemon Cafe in the Forest: A cafe run by Pokemon, famous for its delicious pineapple juice. A great place to unwind! Note that the staff and most of the customers here are Pokemon!]
Naoki: "..."
Was this the power of the internet?
I wonder if the Naoki Ranch has its own landmark as well?
Naoki quickly switched to the Paniola Region and selected the Paniola Town area. True enough, he spotted the landmark for his ranch on the map.
[Naoki Ranch: A ranch that raises many Pokemon, known for its production of rock salt and two types of fresh milk. Additionally, there are many special Pokemon trials here, but be warned, the ranch owner is incredibly strong, so come prepared for a challenge!]
"Indeed."
Naoki glanced at the description of Lili'uokalani Town once more.
[Lili'uokalani Town: The birthplace of the Bounty Culture, this was once an ordinary small town that gradually prospered with the arrival of Tapu Koko. The Bounty Shrine on the back mountain is highly recommended for a visit!]
"...The chief of Freeze Condensation Village would definitely cry if he saw this."
After a moment of silence, Naoki instructed Golurk to continue following the navigation.
Weaving through the jungle and venturing deeper, they hopped down a steep slope, beyond which a uniquely shaped treehouse appeared amidst the dense foliage.
The house was built on a sturdy tree, with wooden stairs connecting it to the ground.
This was the heart of the forest, surrounded by towering, ancient trees with vines dangling from their branches, creating an aura of a hidden realm.
"Pokemon Cafe in the Forest, we've arrived!" Naoki dismounted from Golurk and climbed the wooden stairs to the treehouse, knocking on the door.
"Anyone here?"
"Knock, knock!"
However, just as he knocked twice, the wooden door swung open, and Naoki caught a glimpse of the interior.
In the dim light, there was a wooden bar counter and several tables and chairs. Behind the counter stood an Oranguru.
On the table next to it were an Illumise and two Sleep Powders, illuminating the shop with the light from their bodies.
Near the back, a Coalossal was using its fiery breath to cook a pot of soup.
However, aside from the Oranguru, all the other Pokemon wore forlorn expressions.
Upon hearing the door open, they turned their heads in unison, looking towards the entrance.
The Oranguru spoke up, "Yare yare." (The store has temporarily stopped serving customers.)
Through the Everstone ability, Naoki understood the Oranguru's words and was taken aback for a moment before shaking his head and explaining, "No, I didn't come for juice. I'm here to investigate and resolve the issue of the Pokemon Cafe in the Forest suspending its business as part of the Island Challenge assigned to me by Island King Hala."
Hearing this, the Pokemon in the cafe perked up.
The Illumise looked delighted, the Sleep Powders were eager, and even the Coalossal poked its head out.
The Oranguru paused, fanning itself as it studied the human before it with intelligent eyes.
"Youyou?" (You can understand Pokemon speech?)
Naoki smiled and nodded. "That's right, and I can also heal Pokemon!"
Golurk nodded vigorously. "Agas!"
The Oranguru seemed to understand, and with a fan in its hand, it explained, "Yare yare." (If we drive it away, it will eat all the other food in the forest, causing the other Pokemon living here to go hungry.)
This tree fruit garden was planted by the Oranguru itself, so even if the fruits were eaten, it wouldn't affect the forest or other Pokemon.
The only impact would be on the cafe's ingredient supply, as without the tree fruits, they couldn't make juice.
