Chapter 532: The Squirrel
Chapter 532: The Squirrel
Remus Lupin's return meant that the mischievous mascots had all been brought under control, and the other adult wizards were gradually returning to their tents.
Arthur Weasley followed Lupin into the tent, and upon seeing that his children were all safe, he let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank goodness, none of you got hurt. How could I face your mother if anything happened to you?"
"Dad, have the wizards who cursed the mascots been caught?" Ron asked.
"No, not yet. In fact, we haven't even figured out who did it!" Mr. Weasley said.
"What about Bill and Charlie?" Ginny stood on tiptoe to look behind them and asked.
"Bill is injured, and Charlie is looking after him."
Mr. Weasley waved his hand. "Come on, we should head back. Let's get a few hours of sleep before we get the Portkeys tomorrow and head home."
The Weasley children quickly got up and followed their father out. As they were about to leave, George leaned close to Wade and winked.
"Don't worry, we've all agreed. No one will say a word about the cabinet."
The others also made a gesture of swearing, and Wade smiled and nodded.
In fact, after his visit to Mr. Flamel, Wade wasn't sure how Nick Lamer had contacted the Ministry of Magic, but his cabinet, which he had expanded with the Undetectable Extension Charm for alchemical research, had been registered with the Ministry in all countries.
So even if someone discovered the expanded space inside the cabinet, it wouldn't be considered illegal.
Of course, the Ministry staff had no idea how large Wade's cabinet actually was. In their understanding, it was probably no bigger than a small storage room for materials.
After that, the other adults also came to collect their children, leading them away. The adults all looked tense and exhausted, and they didn't have the energy to chat. They just nodded and left in silence.
In the end, only Lupin, Wade, Harry, and Hermione remained.
Before going to bed, Harry asked, "When will Sirius be back?"
"I don't know. He might have discovered a Dark wizard's trail and followed it."
Lupin's brow was furrowed with worry. He said gently, "He hasn't contacted me yet. I'll let you know as soon as I hear from him."
Sirius often did this, and Harry couldn't help but sigh at the concern his godfather always caused. "Remus, you should get some rest too."
"Okay." Lupin smiled and watched as the children went to their respective bedrooms.
That night, despite everyone being exhausted, few managed to sleep.
Wade lay in bed fully clothed, turning over, and could still hear the faint, distant sobs.
Not everyone had the chance to sleep peacefully. The violent goblins and Veela had been brutal, and some had lost loved ones.
The Ministry of Magic, in a rush, couldn't provide enough Portkeys, and the few wizards capable of creating them were prioritizing the injured to be sent to the hospital.
So, some of the lightly injured, those who were terrified, and the families of the deceased were left in the nightmarish camp, temporarily accommodated by the Ministry.
The sobs came and went, and the sound made Wade's head throb.
He tossed and turned, thinking everyone else had fallen asleep, and then got up to get a butterbeer from downstairs. After hesitating for a while, he didn't drink it and instead took a can of coffee.
He sipped his coffee as he stepped outside the tent, sitting in the same spot where he had chatted with Bill earlier. He tilted his head back to look at the sky, where a few dim stars were hidden among the clouds.
"Hoot—hoot—hoot—"
The deep, slow hoots of an owl came from a distance, unaccompanied by any other animal sounds, making them sound particularly eerie and lonely.
As if in response to this call, a profound and indescribable sense of melancholy rose in Wade's heart, as if it were gnawing at his heart, making him feel cold.
Wade recalled this night from the original story... He couldn't remember if anyone had been killed, but he didn't think so. What stood out most was the Dark Mark that had risen into the sky.
But now...
Wade was lost in his thoughts when something suddenly flashed in front of him, catching his attention.
He steadied himself and looked at the weedy ground in front of him. After a moment, a squirrel poked its head out of the grass, its round eyes cautiously examining Wade, ears perked forward, and small paws tucked in front of its chest.
Wade: "..."
He rubbed his eyes and looked again, only to find the squirrel had boldly run up to him, its fluffy tail held high, a serious expression on its face as it let out a series of crisp "squeaks."
Wade slowly blinked, with only one thought in his mind—should he pretend not to recognize it and catch it for a bit of fun?
To give it to Harry as a pet... it would be quite amusing...
As the conflict between his sense of morality and the desire for mischief raged in Wade's heart, the squirrel in front of him quickly gave up on communicating through "squeaks" and used its little paws to write a message on the ground:
【I am Sirius Black, transformed into this form. Take me to Dumbledore.】
Wade: "..."
He felt a moment of regret, then reached out and picked up the squirrel, looking into its black eyes. "Are you really Sirius?"
The squirrel nodded solemnly, its big tail swaying behind it.
"I understand. I'll take you to Dumbledore right away."
Wade said, placing the squirrel on his shoulder and putting a communication bean in his ear. "Contact Albus Dumbledore."
A moment later, he heard the sound of the connection being established.
...
"Bang!"
"Look at what your Irish team mascot did! Was this a performance or a murder?"
"They were beloved by everyone in our country, and they were fine during the match. They must have been tampered with!"
"That's right! It's your British Ministry of Magic's fault for not ensuring the safety of our beloved mascots! You must give us an explanation!"
"Our mascots didn't go berserk and attack the audience!"
"That's because they didn't even qualify for the match!"
"Gentlemen, gentlemen, we shouldn't be arguing about who's to blame. We need to discuss how to resolve this and find out who cursed the mascots."
"In my career, I've never encountered anything like this! We've lost twelve Veelas! Do you know what a huge loss that is?"
Before Wade could even approach the large, ornate tent, he heard the intense arguments coming from inside.
Dumbledore quickly stepped out of the tent, his face still showing a mix of helplessness and fatigue.
