Chapter 531: Voldemort's Killing Move
Chapter 531: Voldemort's Killing Move
In a clearing in the Forbidden Forest.
Felix looked at the thestrals he had lured with a half-head of bloody dead cow, feeling very satisfied.
"Hagrid told me the secret, and it seems you really like it", Felix said. The two thestrals bent down, exposing their thin, bony necks as they tore into the dead beef, "He also said you're very smart, so you should understand what I'm saying... I need your help with something small."
The thestrals remained silent, quietly enjoying their meal. Although they were omnivores, eating grass, fruit, and meat, it wasn't every day they got fresh beef. As Felix spoke, another thestral cautiously peered out from the forest, eyeing its two companions and the unfamiliar wizard, hesitating whether to join them.
The sound of eating continued to attract the new thestral, which soon joined in.
Felix seized the opportunity and reached out to stroke the mane of the nearest thestral. He felt a tough, thick skin covering a frame of bones, devoid of any meat.
The thestral lifted its head uneasily, its silvery eyes staring at Felix.
"Keep eating, keep eating", he said with a smile, patting its bald head. His eyes had a predatory gleam, like a wolf looking at a rabbit. The thestral flicked its black, long tail and continued to tear at the dead beef with its sharp teeth.
The new thestral was initially panicked, spreading its massive wings in alertness. However, when neither Felix nor the other thestrals paid it any attention, it seemed to realize its behavior was pointless. The food on the ground was far more important. So, when Felix touched its smooth, hairless body, it only snorted.
Felix smiled faintly, and his body began to transform.
...
"I still can't accept it. To me, this seems more like Beedle the Bard's mockery of the Deathly Hallows legend. In the end, none of the three brothers escaped Death, even the third brother with the Invisibility Cloak merely faced Death calmly. Their powers are even less effective than a Philosopher's Stone, which at least allowed Nicolas Flamel to live for over six hundred years!"
Hermione, Luna, and Ginny walked along a path at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, still arguing about their recent topic.
"That's because they didn't receive the recognition", Luna said in a distant voice.
"What kind of recognition?"
"I don't know", Luna said dreamily, "It might be some kind of ritual, or a predetermined method of use, or perhaps", she gazed blankly at Hermione and Ginny's eyes, "according to my father, you need to possess all three Hallows to harness their power."
Hermione's face showed strong disagreement, but she asked calmly, "You mean the strange symbol you showed us?"
"Maybe", Luna said.
"Let's talk about something else", Ginny quickly interjected, showing little interest in the topic, "Luna, do you have the bone whistle?"
"I do", Luna said happily, pulling out a thin rope made of grass stems from her neck, which held a grayish-white whistle.
Hermione glanced at it, "Is this the one Hagrid gave us?"
"Yes", Luna said, "It can summon the creatures Hagrid raises, but there are no dangerous creatures at the edge of the Forbidden Forest. I sometimes use it to attract Unicorns and thestrals... and Firenze." She peered around nervously, "Don't tell Firenze, he wouldn't be happy."
"Can Centaurs hear this sound?" Hermione asked with interest, finding this a fascinating fact.
"Of course", Luna said seriously, "But he might not be nearby. We can try a few different spots."
They passed through a thicket and faintly smelled blood. Luna pushed aside a large branch, revealing a group of six or seven thestrals gathered in the clearing.
"Wow, what good luck", Luna said.
"Someone has been here", Hermione said, staring at the half-skeleton of the dead cow on the ground, muttering to herself, "Was it Hagrid? But it's unlikely he would focus on other animals right now. He's dealing with a huge problem..."
Luna had already hopped onto the clearing, enthusiastically greeting the thestrals.
The thestrals were familiar with her, only lifting their eyes to glance at her before returning to their meal, allowing Luna to stroke them.
Ginny stared at the piece of beef on the ground. She couldn't see the thestrals, only the chunks of meat detaching from the bones and disappearing into the air, followed by a bone-chilling chewing sound, "This feeling is terrible. It's like there's an invisible mouth full of sharp teeth in the air, and you never know when you'll walk right into it..."
"That thestral is strange", Hermione said. Luna turned to look at the unique thestral—lying quietly on the ground, somehow they could see a serene demeanor on its bony face. Its eyes were half-closed, showing no surprise or unease at their arrival.
"Are you new? I don't think I've seen you before", Luna squatted in front of it and asked softly.
The thestral glanced at her and closed its eyes completely, seemingly uninterested in responding.
Luna skillfully picked up a handful of grass from the ground and offered it to the thestral, but the thestral turned away, its eyes filled with disdain.
"Oh, are you not hungry?"
"Luna, the book says thestrals are very dangerous, even though Hagrid claims to have tamed these ones in the Forbidden Forest", Hermione said. She had little faith in Hagrid's assurances of safety, especially after thinking about the Acromantulas and Grawp he kept in the forest.
The bone whistle Hagrid had given her was tucked away in the innermost pocket of her beaded purse, and she didn't think she'd ever need to use it.
"But I feel like it's very friendly", Luna said, her pale eyes blinking as she looked at the thestral lying on the ground. "Don't you?"
The thestral suddenly opened its large mouth, revealing a mouthful of sharp teeth, and let out a growling "woof woof" sound, startling the three of them. Ginny stumbled backward, staring blankly at the air. "What's going on?"
Even the thestral that had been eating stopped and looked over.
"They're very friendly, aren't they?" Hermione asked sharply.
Luna didn't answer, instead examining the thestral closely. "That's strange, you give me a completely different feeling. There were a lot of pesky flies buzzing around your head... but they're gone now." Luna said, looking puzzled.
"Let's go, Luna. We'll go somewhere else... or maybe come back another day", Hermione said, pulling Luna and Ginny away. Luna looked back at the unique thestral with longing. "Maybe I can be friends with it. It might be the king of the thestrals in the Forbidden Forest..."
As they left, the thestral stood up and walked into the depths of the forest with the others, its gait distinctly different.
"See, its way of walking is also unique."
After a while, Felix emerged from another part of the Forbidden Forest, wiping away the nonexistent sweat from his forehead, feeling that today's events were extremely bizarre.
The next two weeks passed quietly, except for one afternoon when he and Snape met in the corridor. Snape warned him, "I told that person about the Elder Wand. He didn't let me participate in what came next, so he must have other plans."
Upon hearing this, Felix took the opportunity to return to Diagon Alley and thoroughly inspected Sword Fort. The entire defense system was running well, everything seemed normal.
As September drew to a close, the weather began to cool. It was another weekend, and Felix and Valen appeared in the Great Hall, each wearing a scarf. Valen sat on a stack of thick books, enjoying a steaming hot pumpkin pie, which Felix had already cut into pieces for him.
After finishing this, Felix noticed that the Great Hall was abuzz with conversation, and people were looking at him with strange expressions.
"What's going on?" he called out to a student who was about to leave the table.
The student first glanced curiously at Felix's chest, waist, and pockets, as if looking for something, then handed him a newspaper. "You might want to read the front page, Professor Hep", the student said.
Felix opened the newspaper, and the headline on the front page of the Daily Prophet surprised him: "Top Ten Wands in History."
"Chirp! (Let's read it together!)" Valen called out.
So Felix spread the newspaper on the table, and they both read it carefully:
"Wands are undeniably important to wizards. Since the creation of wands, there have been countless legends of powerful wands, and people love to discuss these tales. In people's minds, a powerful wand and a powerful wizard are closely linked, but whether it is the wizard who makes the wand famous or the wand that shapes the wizard's power remains a mystery.
However, it is well-known that Mr. Ollivander, the most renowned wandmaker in Europe, once said: 'The wand chooses the wizard.' Wand lore also suggests that every wand is unique, leading us to wonder: Are there truly exceptional wands? They are like hidden treasures, quietly lying in velvet boxes in wand shops, waiting for a worthy owner?
The author has reviewed extensive materials and has compiled a list of the ten most famous wands in history, ranking them by the influence of their owners for your reference.
Note: Some great wizards' wands are not well-known because they never emphasized the role of their wands in their achievements, so they are not included in this list.
Tenth: The Deathstick, unknown length, Elder wood, core material unknown;
Its owner was the notorious Dark Wizard Lorcius, who killed the fearsome wizard Barabbas Deverill through underhanded means, obtained his wand, and named it the Deathstick. He then conquered all his enemies. It is said that after each victory, Lorcius would fondly stroke his new wand and proclaim it the embodiment of death. His famous quote was: 'Face me, death.'
He met his end in a tavern, and the identity of his killer remains unknown. Due to his cruel and tyrannical nature, many claimed to have killed him, but none could produce the wand.
Ninth: The Old Hammer Wand...
Eighth: Godelot's Wand;
This wand gained its fame because its owner regarded it as a partner and even a mentor. Using the wand's power and his own knowledge, Godelot wrote The Most Venomous Magic. Godelot referred to his wand as "my most evil and enigmatic friend."
Seventh on the list is Salazar Slytherin's wand, made of snake wood with a Basilisk horn core, of unknown length.
In this case, the wizard and the wand were equally renowned. Their combination terrified other wizards of the time. It is said that in his youth, Slytherin wielded the snake wood wand and commanded serpents. Many wizards admired his courage, but few dared to approach him (except for his friend Gryffindor). At some point, the wand transformed into the shape of a cane. According to historical illustrations, the cane was entwined with a Basilisk, and when the Basilisk opened its eyes, the enemy would die.
The wand's current whereabouts are unknown. Note: Among the four founders of Hogwarts, only Salazar Slytherin has living descendants, so the wand may have passed down through one of his branches.
Sixth on the list is the Fate Wand, of unknown length, wood, and core.
The wand's owner was an unknown wizard who was active for an even shorter time than Lorcius. A hooded Dark Wizard challenged the most renowned duelists of the time over a period of just three months. Few survived, but the challenges suddenly stopped after three months. Rumors suggest that a body resembling the challenger was found in a dirty ditch, though this cannot be confirmed.
During a battle where he killed a powerful opponent, he spoke in a low voice: "I am with fate." Thus, his wand became known as the Fate Wand.
The wand's final whereabouts are unknown.
Fifth on the list is Morgan le Fay's wand (Morgana), with unknown wand information.
Arthur's half-sister and Merlin's enemy, she ruled Avalon as a queen. Much of her power came from her own magical abilities.
Fourth on the list is Merlin's wand, made of English oak, with unknown length and core.
Merlin's reputation speaks for itself.
Third on the list is Gellert Grindelwald's wand, with unknown information.
The wand's fame is largely due to its owner. It is rumored that the Dark Lord once described his wand as 'the best of them all.' Given the actions he took afterward, this claim is quite convincing.
The wand disappeared after the epic battle in 1945, possibly destroyed in the fight, or perhaps it is in the custody of the British Ministry of Magic, or hidden by a saint.
Second on the list is the wand of 'He Who Must Not Be Named,' thirteen and a half inches long, made of yew with a Phoenix Feather core.
It is well known that wands with Phoenix Feather cores are rare and powerful, each one being an excellent work. 'He Who Must Not Be Named's' wand has a Phoenix Feather core. According to wandlore, a yew wand grants the wielder control over life and death, complemented by the Phoenix Feather's strength and adaptability. This undoubtedly makes the wand capable of carrying immense power. It's no wonder the wand chose him; it was almost a precise prophecy.
It is speculated that the wand was destroyed fourteen years ago.
First on the list is the Elder Wand, of unknown length, made of elder, with an unknown core.
The name comes from a fairy tale in The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Many people remember it and may have even fantasized about owning this invincible wand in their childhood, though they often forget these childish dreams as they grow older.
However, some continue to research the authenticity of the Elder Wand even as adults. They claim that Beedle based his stories on a lot of real history, and that the Elder Wand's true story might be derived from one of the wands mentioned above.
The Elder Wand is placed first because it seems to have very broad criteria for choosing its owner. Anyone who kills the current owner can gain the wand's allegiance. In other words, anyone who possesses it can wield its power.
The Elder Wand's whereabouts were unknown for a long time, but a recent rumor suggests that Felix Hep, the Hogwarts professor of Ancient Runes, who gained fame at the Quidditch World Cup final, once referred to his wand as the Elder Wand. Whether this is a nod to the fairy tale or if he truly possesses the legendary invincible wand remains unknown.
In the Great Hall.
Felix clutched the newspaper, with only one thought in mind: he wanted to swear.
Voldemort's killing blow came unexpectedly.
It's important to clarify a few points from the original story: the fairy tale "The Tale of the Three Brothers", the authenticity of the Elder Wand, and the legend of the Deathly Hallows are three separate matters, and fewer people know about each as you go deeper.
Specifically:
- Many wizards have read The Tales of Beedle the Bard but consider it a fairy tale.
- Some people know that the Elder Wand is real.
- A few people know about the bloody transfer rule of the Elder Wand (or have deduced it).
- Only a select few know about the concept of the Deathly Hallows.
