Chapter 53: You Scratch My Back, I'll Scratch Yours
Chapter 53: You Scratch My Back, I'll Scratch Yours
On Thursday noon, Tanimura Toshihiro approached Mu Yue.
"Ms. Hanyu, the students of Class 1-1 are really out of line. They're disrupting my classes to the point where I can't teach properly," Tanimura complained.
He admitted that he had underestimated the students of Class 1-1 when he said he didn't mind their behavior before.
After teaching them for an entire afternoon, he felt mentally exhausted and just wanted the school day to end sooner.
Tanimura didn't have any classes with Class 1-1 on Thursdays, but he did on Friday mornings.
To prevent a repeat of the miserable experience he had on Wednesday afternoon, Tanimura sought out Mu Yue in advance, hoping to leverage her influence among the students to help him out.
"Ah, these kids. They promised me they would behave," Mu Yue sighed, sympathizing with Tanimura's plight.
"Don't worry, Teacher Tanimura. I'll definitely talk to them this afternoon and tell them not to go against you," Mu Yue assured him.
Hearing Mu Yue's words, Tanimura breathed a slight sigh of relief, but he still seemed a bit apprehensive as he said, "Ms. Hanyu, could you perhaps drop by my class when I'm teaching on Friday? I'm afraid they won't listen to me otherwise."
If all his lessons with Class 1-1 for the rest of the year turned out to be as torturous as the one on Wednesday, he wasn't sure if he could last until the bonus season.
It was one thing to be rejected by a student or two, but to have an entire class turn against him was truly unbearable.
"No problem," Mu Yue nodded in agreement.
"With your assurance, Ms. Hanyu, I can rest easy," Tanimura said with a grateful smile.
After their conversation, Tanimura turned and headed back to his office.
Mu Yue watched Tanimura's retreating figure and thought to himself that Tanimura's three years of teaching had been for naught, as he seemed to have no grasp of the students' psychology.
By forcing her to intervene and suppress the students, Tanimura was only making them resent him more. In the students' eyes, Mu Yue was helping out a struggling colleague, and they might even view her as considerate and kind.
On the other hand, Tanimura was seen as incompetent and lacking self-awareness, trying to assert his authority as the homeroom teacher over them.
Mu Yue pondered the situation further and wondered if he had misjudged Tanimura.
After all, this was a ninja school, and the circumstances were different from his past life. If Class 1-1's academic performance wasn't so exceptional, Tanimura might not have found himself in such a predicament.
Shaking his head, Mu Yue decided not to dwell on these trivial matters anymore and made his way back to his office.
Since Tanimura had requested his help, what else could he do but agree? He certainly didn't want to be labeled as stingy or uncooperative. So, being the model colleague that he was, Mu Yue readily consented and prepared to follow through on his promise.
Back in the office, Mu Yue resumed practicing calligraphy.
"Hey, Teacher Mu Yue, you got a new pen?" Ueda Aya noticed that Mu Yue was holding a different pen than before.
"Yeah, it was a gift from a student," Mu Yue smiled and nodded.
"That's so nice. I've been teaching for several years and never received a gift from my students," Ueda said enviously.
Hearing this, Ikegaya Isamu, who had been listening to their conversation, saw an opportunity to strike. "Ueda, you should also consider Teacher Mu Yue's teaching skills and popularity among the students. Comparing yourself to him shows a lack of self-awareness."
Ueda fell silent, realizing that the truth hurt more than lies.
Seeing Ueda's glum expression, Ikegaya felt a surge of satisfaction.
"Maybe the students in Ueda-sensei's class are just more introverted and too shy to give gifts," Mu Yue said, trying to ease the tension.
"You always know what to say, Teacher Mu Yue," Ueda smiled, even though she knew it was just a comforting remark. Still, who didn't like hearing nice things?
Kimura Sando, witnessing this exchange, thought that Ikegaya's perpetual single status wasn't without reason.
As the time for the next class drew near, Mu Yue left the office and made his way to the classroom.
Instead of starting the lesson right away, he first addressed the issue that Tanimura had brought to his attention.
"We didn't disturb him during his teaching. We only spoke to him after he stopped to advise us," Kazumi Izumo said, feeling wronged by the accusation.
They hadn't caused any disruptions during class. Although the teacher's teaching skills left much to be desired, no one had voiced any criticism during his lessons. They had all listened attentively and diligently practiced the techniques he taught, even completing the training exercises with dedication.
Everyone was aiming for good scores in the upcoming practical assessments and were thus receptive to the training.
"You must not disturb Teacher Tanimura's class or speak ill of him," Mu Yue instructed, without directly answering Koichi's question.
He wanted to imply that Tanimura had complained without explicitly saying so, letting the students know that Tanimura's behavior had prompted his lecture.
"We understand," the students nodded in agreement, although they weren't sure how they would behave in the future.
Mu Yue nodded and smiled, then began the lesson.

After school, Mu Yue trained his disciples as usual and returned to his home in the main city in the evening.
This time, it wasn't Mu Yue freeloading a meal; it was his turn to enjoy a meal at the Namikaze household.
"We've had so many meals at your place, and we feel bad about it. So, today, you can take a break and enjoy our cooking," Minato said, leading Mu Yue to his home.
Minato and Kushina worked together, each preparing two dishes.
Minato and Kushina asked Mu Yue to taste their cooking first. Mu Yue wanted to say that they should all eat together, but seeing the eager look in their eyes, he knew what he had to do.
Mu Yue first tasted the grilled fish that Minato had prepared.
To be honest, this grilled fish was nothing like what Mu Yue had in mind. It wasn't even a whole fish; it was just a palm-sized piece of fish meat that had been marinated and sprinkled with salt before grilling.
"This dish preserves the original flavor of the ingredients very well, and it's delicious," Mu Yue praised.
However, Mu Yue didn't just give empty flattery. He also pointed out some shortcomings, such as not timing the grilling perfectly.
Mu Yue gave similar feedback for the remaining four dishes, sometimes emphasizing the positives and other times pointing out what could be improved.
"Hehe, our cooking isn't bad, is it?" Kushina smiled happily.
She was delighted that her handmade dishes received recognition from Mu Yue, a culinary master.
"I, along with Minato, have been practicing making braised pork. You must come and taste it next time," Kushina said.
Mu Yue nodded and smiled, jokingly insisting that he must taste their creations to inspect the progress of his two students.
As they ate, they chatted happily.
Minato also shared with Mu Yue that he had recently heard other Jonin ninjas talking about him. Apparently, some children had complained that his teaching wasn't as good as the special jounin teachers' at the school.
When this topic came up, Kushina praised Mu Yue's teaching skills. Although she hadn't seen him teach at the Ninja Academy, she had witnessed his culinary instructions firsthand.
At this point, Mu Yue didn't remain overly humble. Instead, he praised Minato and Kushina, saying that Minato would undoubtedly be a well-liked teacher if he became one, and Kushina...
In this pleasant atmosphere, they enjoyed a delightful dinner and achieved their respective goals.
