Chapter 53: Promotion and a Raise
Chapter 53: Promotion and a Raise
By the time Xueheng emerged from the bathroom, an hour had passed.
He walked into the living room and saw Cat curled up on the sofa, looking dejected.
"Huh? You're back to your cat form?" Xueheng exclaimed in surprise.
On the sofa was not the beautiful black-haired cat-eared girl, Ning Fengwan, but a black cat with four white gloves.
"Mhm," Ning Fengwan mumbled, burying her cat head in the gap of the sofa, her voice muffled.
She didn't know how to face Xueheng anymore.
The intimate contact in her human form... and then the accidental touch with the unsheathed holy sword.
It was all too stimulating for a girl who hadn't even held a man's hand before.
Just thinking about it made her want to bang her head against the wall.
Ning Fengwan extended her cat paws to cover her face.
"Little Wan, how did you change back? Can you change again?" Xueheng walked over and sat down on the sofa next to her.
"Call me 'Cult Leader'..." Ning Fengwan replied listlessly, then sighed. "...I don't know. After I calmed down just now, I turned back into a cat."
"Now I can't turn back into a human. It's so strange."
She felt a bit disappointed but also secretly relieved.
If she could permanently return to her human form, she would have no reason to stay with Xueheng any longer, and she would have to resume her role as the Dragon Cult's leader.
Although she had briefly transformed back due to some special condition, the situation was still unstable, and she needed to continue staying with him for the time being.
"Hmm... I recently met someone who knows a lot about divine artifacts. I'll go and ask her about it tomorrow," Xueheng said thoughtfully.
Ning Fengwan nodded but didn't ask how Xueheng knew such a person. She just looked at him with her emerald-like vertical pupils, her gaze complex.
An awkward silence filled the room, and the tension between the two gradually thickened.
Xueheng had been pretending to be nonchalant since he left the bathroom, but he was starting to feel uncomfortable.
He cleared his throat and said awkwardly, "I'm going out for a walk."
Then he stood up, took the keys, and left the house.
After hearing the door close, Ning Fengwan lay on her back on the sofa, staring blankly at the ceiling.
Scenes from the bathroom flooded her mind, and she began to toss and turn on the sofa, unable to get comfortable.
...
The next morning, Xueheng woke up, threw off the covers, and glanced at the cat still sleeping by his side, a smile tugging at his lips.
The previous day, they had both taken some time to calm down, and by the time Xueheng returned home, the awkward atmosphere had dissipated, and their interaction returned to normal, at least on the surface.
As for how things would develop from here and how the events of last night would unfold, only time would tell.
As usual, Xueheng made breakfast, and his [Cooking] skill finally reached Level 4, according to the panel's notification.
After his morning jog and a quick shower, Xueheng set off for Qing University.
Without any detours, he made his way straight to the seventh floor of the university library.
In the dimly lit, old library, the same girl sat quietly, immersed in a book, exuding a serene aura.
Today, she wasn't wearing the tight white T-shirt and jeans from before. Instead, she had on a black shirt with a beige and gray plaid overshirt, knotted at the waist to showcase her slender figure, paired with black skinny pants that hugged her long, slender legs, and simple white canvas shoes.
Xueheng found the outfit intriguing and stole a few glances before reaching into his bag and taking out The Crown of a Villainess.
"And here are the [Ordinary Glasses]," Xue Jing said as he placed them on the table in front of Wu Youqing.
"Boss, mission accomplished." Xue Jing sat down in the chair and smiled.
Wu Youqing closed the book in her hands and blinked, her lavender eyes shifting to Xue Jing.
"You've worked hard. You did very well this time."
Her voice was soft and appreciative.
"I didn't expect someone else to intervene. I'm sorry that this unexpected turn of events put you in danger." There was a hint of apology in the girl's expression.
Xue Jing shook his head and replied, "You're not a fortune-teller; how could you possibly foresee everything? I chose to join the company and signed the contract, so I was prepared for these kinds of risks. This level of danger is to be expected, so don't worry about it."
Wu Youqing nodded, her voice gentle as she said, "That's true... However, due to the special circumstances of this containment mission, I will upgrade its rating to C+ level, and your share of the compensation will also be increased accordingly."
She reached into the bag on the adjacent seat and pulled out a file, handing it to Xue Jing.
"The man you killed yesterday has been embalmed, and his identity has been confirmed."
Xue Jing took the file and opened it.
On the cover was a passport-style photo of the man he had killed the day before.
His name was Zhu Yingkun, and he was from Yuancheng, one of the three inner ring cities of the Fifth Urban Circle.
"This man was a C-level Containment Agent working for the Xu Containment Company."
Wu Youqing leaned forward slightly, resting her elbows on the table as she spoke to Xue Jing.
"But when I contacted Xu Containment yesterday, they assured me that they had not assigned Zhu Yingkun to carry out this particular containment mission. They claimed that he acted entirely on his own."
"It's a messy situation that can't be easily untangled, and I don't think Xu Containment is trying to shift the blame."
"It doesn't seem likely that a containment company would send someone all the way from an inner ring city to contain a C-level divine artifact here."
The girl's soft voice carried a hint of intrigue as she spoke to Xue Jing, her hair falling forward and framing her face, releasing a subtle, pleasant fragrance.
"Nevertheless, I will make sure that Xu Containment compensates you in some way."
Xue Jing nodded, "It's your decision."
After all, he hadn't suffered any losses, and he had taken care of the opponent himself.
"Speaking of which, Zhu Yingkun's autopsy report is a bit strange," Wu Youqing said, fixing her gaze on Xue Jing with a meaningful look.
"Aside from one of his eyes being destroyed, there were almost no external wounds on his body, but his internal organs seemed to have been devoured, leaving no trace."
"Even the cause of such injuries couldn't be determined..."
Xue Jing stroked his chin thoughtfully, "Hmm... Can I keep it a secret? Please, big sister."
He wasn't sure how others would perceive Shadowflame, a skill akin to a superpower, so he thought it best to keep it under wraps for now.
Wu Youqing nodded, unconcerned, "If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. Everyone has their secrets. As long as you have the corresponding containment abilities, that's enough for me."
She reached into her bag again and pulled out something else.
It was a black card similar to an ID, made of a material resembling obsidian that reflected the dim light of the lamp.
On the front was a white sketch of 'Death of God', intricately detailed.
On the back were a few lines of text:
[Wu Corporation for Divine Artifact Containment and Research Ltd.]
[Specially Appointed C-level Divine Artifact Containment Agent - Xue Jing]
