Chapter 53: Lanchi's Grand Harvest
Chapter 53: Lanchi's Grand Harvest
Cardinal Lanchi's footsteps were as light as a gentle breeze, his figure blurred in the dim corridor lighting, like a messenger emerging from the pitch-black depths of the gallery.
Unlike the vast majority of demon students, the demonic traits on Lanchi's body were all white, giving him an elegant and harmless appearance, akin to that of a medical or support-oriented special demon.
However, in the eyes of the unfortunate demon student Bachael, who had been caught by Lanchi and Hyberrian, this pure white radiance within the abyss only evoked endless strangeness and dissonance.
For Bachael, as a victim, knew very well the crazy and sinister things this white demon had done in the exam room!
"Why did you run?"
Lanchi stood beside the demon student Bachael, his gentle voice like a gentle breeze skimming across a lake, yet carrying an unshakable seriousness.
How dare you ask me that?
As soon as Bachael heard Lanchi's question, sparks of anger flashed in his eyes, and his teeth ground so hard they emitted a faint creaking sound! If it weren't for this jerk, he could have taken a peaceful exam for two hours and earned at least one credit coin!
Now, however, he had to navigate this perilous gallery, facing the constant threat of death.
But just as Bachael's anger surged, it was instantly snuffed out by fear and a strong will to survive.
To stay alive, even with his pride, he dared not provoke the two beings before him, despite being only a second-tier demon.
This clarity and will to live were precisely why he had managed to survive thus far and even escape the notice of the two demon examiners.
"If you don't have any credit coins, you will be immediately executed if the Director of Instruction finds you wandering the corridors during class time!"
Without pausing to explain further, Bachael anxiously gestured to both sides of the gallery, pleading with Lanchi as if asking him to let him go and find a classroom.
Lanchi observed Bachael's panicked state and, though he only partially understood this response, he now comprehended why other demon students would rather risk their lives in a classroom than loiter in the corridors.
"Do you want this?"
Lanchi took out several coins, similar to black gold in appearance, from his pocket and dangled them in front of Bachael's eyes, asking.
The coins he held were about half an inch in diameter, expertly crafted, and felt substantial.
Despite their deep black color, they reflected a reddish glow in the dim corridor lighting, like molten lava within the abyss. The emblem of the Demon Academy was engraved at the center, surrounded by intricate devil-scripted runes, preventing any possibility of forgery.
Lanchi guessed that these must be the credit coins Bachael mentioned, but instead of directly asking if they were, he phrased his question differently.
"?!”
Bachel stared at Lanchi in disbelief, wondering how he had come to possess so many credit coins! Nonetheless, he nodded vigorously.
Lanchi understood from Bachael's reaction.
These coins were plucked from the bodies of demon students they had left behind in the exam room, most of them the efficient spoils of Hyberrian's thievery in her rogue form.
"Explain all the school intelligence you know, and I'll give you one credit coin. How does that sound?"
After ensuring Hyberrian's safety by tossing her a coin, Lanchi held up another and, through the radiant light it cast, looked at Bachael and asked.
"Of, of course!"
Bachael eagerly nodded, accepting the deal.
Demons generally kept their word when it came to transactions, and this Bachael seemed to carry an air of nobility, perhaps from a prestigious family of this era's demon world. For demons, transactions held the importance of upholding family honor.
"Let's begin. To save time, start with the important rules and regulations, and skip the parts I tell you to."
Cardinal Lanchi flipped the promised credit coin to Bachael with his thumb as he spoke.
In order to prevent Bachael from realizing his ignorance of the school's rules, Lanchi chose to let Bachael divulge the information himself.
"Okay."
Bachael, fixated on the credit coin, worried that the Director of Instruction might appear at any moment, and hurriedly spoke up, "You can earn credit coins by successfully passing the courses in the classrooms. During other times, you need to spend a large number of credit coins to survive in this school."
"The classrooms have various teaching methods and exam-like modes, all of which are places where you gamble with your life to learn. As for the functional areas, such as the library, cafeteria, and infirmary, they are generally not dangerous but require spending credit coins."
"The school only operates at night for 12 hours each day, with five 2-hour courses and four 30-minute breaks. Only during these 30-minute breaks will the corridors of the classrooms connect to the corridors of the functional areas. Every morning at 6 o'clock, you must pay a minimum of five credit coins to the school and receive five graduation credits. Once you accumulate 4,800 graduation credits, you can graduate from this Hell Corridor Academy and receive your diploma from the Demon World..."
Lanchi nodded frequently as he listened to Bachael's words.
He now had a basic understanding of the school's operating rules.
Although the Hell Corridor Academy appeared to be entirely indoors, it was actually composed of countless intricate corridors that shifted at fixed times, making it difficult even for older students to quickly find their desired locations.
The doors to the classrooms where one could obtain credit coins had different numbers of imprint patterns, indicating the current difficulty of the classroom, with the lowest being 1 and the highest being 3. This number also represented the minimum number of credit coins one could earn upon passing the class.
For example, the previous demon exam room had a difficulty level of 1, so passing it would guarantee at least one credit coin. Outstanding performance might also lead to additional rewards.
"For instance, although the passing grade for the demon exam room is 50 points, there might be special rewards for an incredibly high score of 90."
Bachael continued without pause.
As for the extremely exaggerated score of 100, Bachael couldn't even imagine what kind of hidden reward that would trigger, as no student had ever achieved it.
In the case of Lanchi, who had directly dismantled the exam room, even if he passed, he wouldn't be able to receive a credit coin from the demon teacher as usual.
However, upon further reflection, Bachael instantly understood where Lanchi had gotten all this loot!
This newly-hatched classmate's behavior of stealing coins was far more efficient than honestly taking the exam!
"What about classrooms with difficulties 2 and 3?"
For the first time, Lanchi interrupted Bachael's flow of words and asked a question.
He did some mental calculations. If one were to choose classrooms with a difficulty level of 1 for all five classes and not consider any extra rewards, they would earn exactly five credit coins.
After paying the mandatory five coins the next morning, they would have to start from scratch again, striving to attend all five classes.
Bachael was obviously the type of student who barely scraped by, with little to no surplus.
Only those with exceptional skill and boldness, daring to choose difficulty level 2 classrooms, could consistently earn more than five credit coins per day. They would have a surplus and might not need to attend all five classes or even spend time in the functional areas.
