Chapter 53: Jerry's Plan
Chapter 53: Jerry's Plan
At two in the morning,
Jerry's door was slowly pushed open, and a tall figure bent over, tiptoeing in like a thief.
It was his adoptive father, Hass.
"Could it be that I'm just overthinking this?"
Hass looked at Jerry, who was sprawled out on the bed with half the blanket kicked off, and couldn't help but mutter to himself.
He picked up the blanket and covered Jerry again, then tiptoed out of the room, closing the door behind him.
As soon as Hass left, Jerry slowly opened his eyes.
"It looks like I need to find a way to completely eliminate Hass's suspicions!"
Earlier, while on the sofa, Jerry had kept the "Brain Booster" function active, making his senses extremely sharp. He easily noticed Hass's unusual behavior.
So, to be cautious, he didn't go out to earn Little Red Stars like he usually did.
Sure enough, Hass came to check on him that night.
This meant that Hass had his doubts about Jerry's identity again.
Actually, Jerry wasn't entirely distrustful of Hass. From the school bus hijacking incident, it was clear that Hass valued his and Elsa's safety more than his duty as a police officer or his sense of justice.
Even if Hass knew Jerry was a wizard, he probably wouldn't tell anyone or take him to the police station for registration.
However, Hass was just an ordinary person. For an ordinary person, the less they knew, the safer they were.
If Hass found out Jerry was a wizard, even if he didn't say anything, there was no guarantee that others couldn't extract that information from him.
If it wasn't one of Jerry's enemies, it might be fine. But if it was someone with a grudge against Jerry, then Hass and Elsa would be in danger.
So, for now, it was best to dispel Hass's doubts and not tell him anything.
But how could he completely dispel Hass's suspicions?
He hadn't learned the "Obliviate" spell yet.
After some careful thought, he began to form a plan in his mind!
The next day, at the dining table in the living room.
"Dad, why do you have dark circles under your eyes?"
Elsa, munching on a crispy, golden-fried dumpling with ice flowers, pointed at Hass's eyes and asked innocently.
Hass took a sip of porridge and stammered, saying that a colleague had called to report on a case, so he had gone to bed late.
Jerry, sitting nearby, chuckled to himself.
Despite staying out until three in the morning and waking up at seven, Jerry only slept for four or five hours each night.
But because of the "Mind Enhancer", he always entered deep sleep, making his sleep efficiency far superior to that of an average person.
And children naturally had better mental resilience.
Hass, being nearly forty and in his middle age, naturally wouldn't have much energy after staying up until two or three in the morning.
"Dad, since you and Miss Berry are together now, why don't you invite her to have dinner at home tonight?"
Hass was taken aback for a moment, then he smiled with relief.
"Sure, son. It's Friday today, so I'll get off work early. I'll make a reservation and take you and Belle out to eat."
Since the children already knew about his relationship with Belle and approved of her, it was indeed time for Belle to meet them in a more formal capacity.
However, Jerry quickly shook his head and advised:
"No need to go out, it would be a waste. I once read a quote that says, 'The highest form of hospitality is a home-cooked meal.'
Miss Berry is about to become one of the most important members of our family. It would be more meaningful to have dinner at home!"
"But?"
Hass hesitated. He couldn't cook, so the family dinner would be all on Jerry.
"Mom, do you think the food I make isn't as good as what we get at restaurants?"
Jerry, seeing Hass's hesitation, pretended to be upset.
Hass quickly waved his hands.
"Of course not! Who could match the food my son makes? Alright, I'll let Belle know. Thanks for doing this!"
"Not at all. Remember to call home when you're off work tonight. I'll start preparing the ingredients in advance so that everything will be ready when you and Miss Berry get home!"
If they went out to eat, the plan would be ruined.
Time: 5:30 PM.
"Ring ring!"
The house phone suddenly rang in the living room.
"Jerry, Dad's calling you!"
Jerry, who was preparing ingredients in the kitchen, heard his sister Elsa's shout and quickly walked into the living room.
"Dad, you're off work. Got it, I'll start right away!"
After hanging up, Jerry grinned and approached Elsa.
"Elsa, do you want to eat some Magic Ice Cream that can replenish your mana?"
"I want to, I want to, but you and Dad said I can't eat it now, right?"
Elsa, who was riding a magic broom and "flying" under the air conditioner, lit up at Jerry's words but then looked puzzled.
Because she was losing her baby teeth, Jerry and Hass had restricted her sweet food intake, especially before meals. Jerry had set this rule a long time ago.
"Cough, cough. Isn't it because your big brother misses you and hasn't seen you eat it in a while? So, do you want it or not?"
Jerry coughed awkwardly.
"Yes!"
Innocent Elsa still trusted Jerry.
After all, Jerry had secretly made her coffee yesterday without Dad knowing.
"Good, but you can't tell Dad that I went out to buy ice cream for you, or there won't be any more in the future!"
Seeing that he had sealed the only loophole, Jerry took out his guitar case from the room and hurriedly left.
Time: 6:30 PM.
Hass, who had already picked up Belle, was driving his police car with a happy heart through the city streets.
Suddenly, the car radio broadcast a news report.
"Hello, everyone. This is your favorite reporter, Lucy. It's 6:30 PM, and we've received reports from citizens that Mr. Wizard, after the fire incident, has appeared again.
He's currently riding a flying broom and has just rescued an elderly person who fell into the river. Let's give him a round of applause!"
Hearing this news, Hass's heart skipped a beat, and he pressed the gas pedal.
"Oh, dear, why are you driving so fast?"
Belle, sitting in the passenger seat, was startled by the sudden acceleration.
"It's getting late, and I'm afraid Jerry will have the food ready before we get there. That wouldn't be good!"
Hass explained casually.
Belle nodded, looking touched.
"I never thought Jerry would be so considerate at school and also take on all the household chores at home. He's only eleven!"
After her reflection, she complained to Hass.
"You should have told me earlier. I could have gone over and helped!"
"Jerry didn't want that. He said he wanted to cook a whole Chinese meal as a gift to celebrate your arrival. Besides, you don't know how to cook Chinese cuisine!"
Hass explained.
"That's true. I might not even cook as well as Jerry. Do you think I can be a good mom?"
Belle suddenly felt a bit melancholic.
