Chapter 529: Baoshu, the Little Trickster
Chapter 529: Baoshu, the Little Trickster
"Hmm? Is it you, Sister?"
Tan Er’s little head couldn’t quite figure it out.
Meng Qianqian said, "Tan Er, you’ve already been exposed, at least to Xiao Rong’er."
Tan Er propped her cheeks with her fists, puzzled. "But I was very careful!"
Meng Qianqian pondered, "That maidservant, Hong Xiu, is no simpleton."
Tan Er pouted and thought for a moment. "Alright."
"They’re putting on a show for me..." Meng Qianqian shook her head. "But something still doesn’t feel right. Was it really that easy for me to see through it? Is this all Xiao Rong’er’s got?"
Tan Er listened intently to Meng Qianqian.
Meng Qianqian murmured, "Is it really Gongsun Ziyu? This seems like an improbable move. Prince Jin Manor wouldn’t agree, and His Majesty wouldn’t be pleased."
Tan Er said, "It’s either you or Gongsun Ziyu, but Gongsun Liuying would never marry!"
Meng Qianqian nodded in agreement. "Her ambitions are as high as the sky; she would only marry a true royal heir."
Tan Er huffed. "Her ambitions are as high as the sky, but her life is as thin as paper!"
Meng Qianqian said to Tan Er, "Don’t give me any more messages for a few days. I’m afraid Xiao Rong’er might take the opportunity to target you."
Tan Er shook her head. "I’m not afraid of her!"
Meng Qianqian smoothed her hair. "I’ll find a way to have Baoshu take you under her wing."
Tan Er hugged Meng Qianqian’s arm. "No, Sister, let me stay at the Thousand Mechanisms Pavilion. I want to be with you! I don’t want to leave!"
Meng Qianqian whispered, "You’ve successfully completed your mission to protect Wuyou. Now it’s time to protect Baoshu."
Tan Er pouted. "Baoshu doesn’t need my protection. You just want to send me away so I don’t get involved in the danger! I don’t care, wherever you are, I’ll be there!"
Meng Qianqian sighed helplessly. "You, my dear."
---
Before long, it was the night before the wedding. The Thousand Mechanisms Pavilion was decked out in lights, bustling with activity.
Gongsun Liuying sat quietly in her room, where the Phoenix Crown and Silk Robe sparkled on the table.
She reached out to touch it.
Suddenly, the door opened, and a cold figure walked in.
Gongsun Liuying turned her head, her eyes flashing with surprise and suspicion. "It’s you?"
Meng Qianqian smiled. "I’ve come to bring my elder sister a wedding gift."
Gongsun Liuying didn’t bother to respond, subtly withdrawing her hand from the wedding dress.
Meng Qianqian smiled meaningfully. "It seems you’re quite satisfied with your wedding attire. No need to rush; you can put it on as soon as the sun rises tomorrow."
Gongsun Liuying said haughtily, "I don’t need your fake sympathy."
Meng Qianqian replied, "I’m genuinely here to give you a wedding gift."
Gongsun Liuying turned her head and glanced at Meng Qianqian’s empty hands. "This is your sincerity?"
Meng Qianqian smiled. "Elder sister has given me so many jewels and trinkets. I couldn’t fulfill your wishes, so I’ve decided to give you a gift of immense value."
Gongsun Liuying mocked, "You couldn’t afford even one of my hairpins with all your wealth. You must have a misunderstanding about ‘immense value.’”
Meng Qianqian said gently, "Why don’t you come and see for yourself?"
Gongsun Liuying asked curiously, "Come and see?"
Meng Qianqian said, "I’ve taken care of the people outside. Would you like to go out for some fresh air?"
Gongsun Liuying hesitated for a moment, then walked to the door, half-believing, half-doubting.
Seeing that no one stopped her, she left the courtyard unimpeded.
"How did you bribe them?"
"With the jewels you gave me."
Gongsun Liuying said coolly, "You’re quite adept at using other people’s gifts."
Meng Qianqian smiled. "Elder sister, let’s go."
Gongsun Liuying sneered. "Fine, I’ll see what you’re up to. If your gift doesn’t satisfy me, I’ll be very angry."
Meng Qianqian remained silent, only giving her a bright smile.
The two of them walked deeper into the compound.
Gongsun Liuying, however, remained calm, never once asking where Meng Qianqian was taking her.
"We’re here."
Meng Qianqian said.
Gongsun Liuying looked at the dark, abandoned courtyard and asked curiously, "Yan Xiaojiu, what’s your game?"
Meng Qianqian pushed open the half-closed gate. "Elder sister, your wedding gift is inside."
"Try anything tricky, and you’re dead!"
Gongsun Liuying said coldly, then stepped into the courtyard.
She had lived in the Thousand Mechanisms Pavilion for so long, yet she had never known there was a courtyard like this within the sect. It seemed unoccupied, but the flowers and plants looked as if they were regularly tended to.
The main hall contained only simple tables and chairs.
Meng Qianqian activated the mechanism and pointed at the floor. "The gift is in the cellar. Shall I go down first and scout the way for Senior Sister?"
Gongsun Liuying sneered, "Yan Xiaojiu, if I were to fear you even in the Thousand Mechanisms Pavilion, I would have been a poor excuse for the pavilion's young mistress all these years."
Meng Qianqian stepped aside. "Then, Senior Sister, please."
Gongsun Liuying descended into the cellar.
The pungent smell of incense made her dizzy, and she covered her nose.
Her eyes fell upon the walls lined with strange talismans, and on the ground, a massive totem was painted in cinnabar.
She looked up and saw two lanterns hanging from the ceiling beams, their eyes like those of malevolent spirits.
A chilling and terrifying aura enveloped her, making her shiver.
A ghostly shadow appeared on the wall in front of her, and she spun around in alarm, only to see Meng Qianqian. She quickly regained her composure.
"What trick are you playing?"
She asked coldly.
Meng Qianqian's lips curved into a smile, and with a flick of her finger, she shot down the lanterns from the ceiling beams.
She held one in each hand and presented them to Gongsun Liuying. "This is my gift for Senior Sister. Please accept it with a smile."
Gongsun Liuying frowned. "Are you mad?"
Meng Qianqian's smile faded slightly. "Please accept it with a smile."
Gongsun Liuying took one of the lanterns and looked at it. She discovered that it bore a set of birth characters.
"These are... my birth characters."
"Exactly."
Meng Qianqian said.
A strange feeling welled up in Gongsun Liuying's heart as she picked up the other lantern. "Whose birth characters are these? What are you trying to do?"
After a moment, as if realizing something, she laughed sarcastically. "Yan Xiaojiu, you’re not planning to perform the Enchantment of Enmity on me, are you?"
Meng Qianqian smiled. "The Enchantment of Enmity is beneath the status of a young mistress. What’s performed in this cellar is the Wushan Prohibited Art."
Gongsun Liuying's expression stiffened.
Meng Qianqian stared straight into her eyes. "You keep saying you are the Phoenix Daughter. Do you know where your Phoenix Daughter destiny comes from?"
Gongsun Liuying's eyelashes trembled.
Meng Qianqian's lips curved slightly. "That's right, you stole it. The original owner of these birth characters is the true Phoenix Daughter you stole from. By seniority, you should call her Senior Sister."
Gongsun Liuying's pupils dilated, and she clenched her hand. "You're lying!"
Meng Qianqian said calmly, "If Senior Sister doesn't believe me, you can ask your mother. She went to great lengths to trick the two of you into the Thousand Mechanisms Pavilion, even causing her own premature labor. I doubt she would forget that."
Gongsun Liuying took a step back, her chest heaving. "You..."
Meng Qianqian smiled. "Senior Sister, isn't this gift priceless?"
The cold light of the night pearl reflected in Meng Qianqian's smiling eyes, adding an even more terrifying aura.
Gongsun Liuying felt a sudden unease. "Who are you really?"
Meng Qianqian didn't answer her and turned to leave the cellar.
"Stop right there! I’m talking to you! Who gave you permission to leave?"
Gongsun Liuying reached out to grab Meng Qianqian but suddenly felt a sharp pain in her chest, and a sweet, metallic taste rose in her throat.
She bent over and spat out a mouthful of blood.
"It's impossible... my destiny is my own... I didn’t steal anyone’s destiny!"
"I was born to be the Phoenix Daughter!"
"Yan Xiaojiu! You dare to scare me and disrupt my mind! I won’t fall for it!"
---
Xiao Rong'er had just finished checking the dowry again, and she looked exhausted.
As soon as she entered the room, she saw her eldest daughter sitting dazedly in her own room.
At her feet were two extinguished lanterns.
Xiao Rong'er glanced at the lanterns and found them familiar, but she didn’t think much of it at the moment.
She sat down beside her daughter. "Why are you here? Does your father know?"
Gongsun Liuying slowly raised her head and looked at Xiao Rong'er.
When she saw her daughter's red, cold, and fierce eyes, Xiao Rong'er was startled. "Liuying, what happened?"
Gongsun Liuying placed the lanterns on the table.
Xiao Rong'er finally recognized them.
Her face changed instantly. "Where did you get these? How did you take them down? Hang them back up quickly!"
She picked up the lanterns and started to leave.
Gongsun Liuying, expressionless, said, "So it’s true."
Xiao Rong'er paused, feeling as if she had fallen into an ice cellar.
She took a deep breath to calm herself and turned to her daughter with a loving smile. "They are lanterns for blessings, just like the eternal lantern, but they are for the living."
Gongsun Liuying said, "The Eternal Lantern is not for blessings; it is to guide the spirits of the dead."
Xiao Rong'er's eyes flickered, and she smiled. "Ah, yes, yes. Mother has been so busy these past few days."
"Is this person still alive?"
Gongsun Liuying asked coolly.
Xiao Rong'er was taken aback for a moment, then looked down at the lantern in her hand, realizing that her daughter was referring to the owner of another set of birth characters.
She walked back to her daughter and sat down beside her, coldly and mercilessly saying, "Dead."
"That's good."
Gongsun Liuying said.
Xiao Rong'er opened her mouth, unsure how to respond. "Liuying, actually, Mother—"
Gongsun Liuying said calmly, "It's fine. I've been waiting here for an hour, and that's enough time for me to think it through."
Since the matter was out in the open, Xiao Rong'er decided to be honest.
She held her daughter's hand and said seriously, "I'm glad you understand. Mother promises you, you will always be the Phoenix Daughter!"
Gongsun Liuying asked, "Did Yan Xiaojiu also use the forbidden art?"
Xiao Rong'er shook her head. "In theory, she shouldn't. This kind of forbidden art isn't something anyone can perform, even your father—"
She stopped abruptly. "She shouldn't have the ability. Mother once tried to kill her, just like stabilizing your fate back then. Unfortunately, she's quite resilient and even found herself a protective charm!"
She was referring to Bao Zhuzhu, the little darling favored by Emperor Liang.
Gongsun Liuying's eyes darkened. "Mother, what is your plan?"
Xiao Rong'er gave a subtle nod to Hong Xiu outside the door.
Hong Xiu nodded and stood guard vigilantly.
Xiao Rong'er sighed. "It's best you don't know the plan. That way, when it all comes to light, you won't be implicated. Mother will take full responsibility for everything."
Gongsun Liuying asked, "Mother, do you plan to have Ziyu marry into Prince Jin's Manor in my place?"
Xiao Rong'er was taken aback. "You—"
Gongsun Liuying said, "Mother took my wedding dress to Ziyu's courtyard and had her try on my jewels and accessories. I'm not stupid. I think all of this is just a ruse."
Xiao Rong'er inhaled sharply, once again marveling at her daughter's sharp intelligence.
What was wrong with her daughter compared to Zhongli Yuan's?
It was just a matter of being born at the wrong time, eight years too early. Who knew whose fate it would be in the end?
Xiao Rong'er sighed. "You're right. The one I truly intended to bind to the wedding palanquin is Yan Xiaojiu."
Gongsun Liuying thought for a moment. "She won't be that easy to manipulate."
Xiao Rong'er said confidently, "Mother has a way!"
---
In the middle of the night, a gentle spring rain fell, soft and tender like a woman's hand.
Meng Qianqian, Female, holding an oiled paper umbrella, passed by the entrance of Mingxin Hall.
She gazed at the red lanterns adorned with the character for "joy", her eyes calm and composed.
Gongsun Yanming, it's time to settle our accounts.
Where should we start?
Your eldest daughter has already lost her Phoenix Daughter fate; that's just the interest.
Guess what you'll lose this time?
---
Prince Jin's Manor.
King Miao got up early.
Ever since he tricked Emperor Liang, he felt completely refreshed.
Just thinking about being a lifelong father made him feel that enduring a few more of Emperor Liang's antics wasn't so bad.
"Father and son can't hold a grudge overnight. What can a father argue with his son?"
"Ouch, my old back."
This was the "injury" left by the stones, and there was no doubt it was Emperor Liang's doing.
"When did that old man shatter the stones... Next time we meet, I'll assert my father's authority!"
"Early in the morning, with whom are you asserting your authority? Do you want me to tell Grandmother?"
Lu Yuan strolled into his courtyard.
King Miao put his hands on his hips. "It's asserting father's authority! You don't understand!"
He wanted to make that old Emperor Liang know that he was still his father!
King Miao asked irritably, "What are you here for? Have you finished your martial arts practice?"
Lu Yuan said, "Not today."
King Miao said sternly, "You must practice every day!"
Lu Yuan said lightly, "Prince Jin's Manor and the Thousand Mechanisms Pavilion are getting married. We should go for the wedding wine."
King Miao waved his hand. "Pfft, it's not like you're marrying my precious granddaughter! What's so great about their wedding wine? I'm not going!"
"Grandpa."
A small, round head peered out from behind Lu Yuan.
King Miao's expression changed in an instant. He scooped up the little one and held her in his arms. "Grandpa's little great-grandson is here! Let Grandpa see, have you gotten any fatter?"
Bao Zhuzhu shook her head earnestly. "Baby isn't fat, baby is cute to the max!"
"Hahahaha!"
King Miao laughed heartily.
Bao Zhuzhu asked, "Grandpa, we're going for the wedding wine."
She wanted to make new friends, and once Grandpa and Grandma got married, she'd receive plenty more pocket money!
What a clever little thing she was!
King Miao said cheerfully, "Let's go! Grandpa will take you!"
Lu Yuan's lips twitched. The maternal grandfather who used to pick him up and drop him off every day and give him sugared haws was truly a mistake...
Hahaha, King Miao, aren't you afraid of running into Emperor Liang again?
A vote for the imperial ticket, the King Miao ticket, and the Baby ticket! (End of Chapter)
