Chapter 527: A Doctor's Duty
Chapter 527: A Doctor's Duty
The appearance of the Moto Mask in the Alola region had sparked a "gold rush," but it eventually faded away as the Moto Mask disappeared, returning the region to its peaceful state.
For a moment, the true identity of Moto Mask became even more mysterious in the hearts of the people.
And amidst this atmosphere, a new day dawned at Naoki's ranch.
As the first rays of dawn rose over the distant horizon, Naoki and his Pokemon awoke from their slumber, ready to embrace the day ahead.
After enjoying the nutritious breakfast prepared by Naoki's sister, the Eevees scampered out of the room, full of energy. They raced across the grass, basking in the warm sunlight as they played on the ranch's verdant fields.
"Slow down!" Naoki called out leisurely as he strolled behind them, carrying a basket.
The Eevees passed by the stable, and the two resident Ponyta and Rapidash, captivated by the lively scene, lifted their heads to watch, only catching a glimpse of the Eevees' retreating backs.
"Here, this is your breakfast for today!" Naoki emptied the basket of ice turnips and black turnips into their trough.
The Ponyta and Rapidash immediately averted their gaze, burying their large heads in the feed trough and happily munching away.
They no longer resembled the legendary Pokemon that once roamed the Crown Tundra; they seemed like any other ordinary horse Pokemon.
Seeing this, Naoki couldn't help but chuckle as he affectionately patted their heads.
It seemed that these two horses had truly settled into ranch life!
The Eevees continued their playful dash past the riding Gogoat's pen. The three Gogoat lay cozily on the grass, enjoying a lazy morning snooze.
Stirred by the commotion created by the Eevees, they opened their eyes slightly, then yawned lazily.
Just then, a tantalizing aroma of grass dumplings wafted through the air from a distance.
The three Gogoat turned their heads and spotted Naoki approaching.
"Here, these are your grass dumplings for today. You must be hungry. Come and eat!"
Naoki emptied the basket of grass dumplings into their trough, speaking casually without turning his head.
However, when he turned around, he was startled to see that the three Gogoat had somehow gotten to their feet and were now standing by his side.
"Meeeh~"
The Gogoat nuzzled his arm affectionately with their heads before making their way to the trough, eagerly beginning their breakfast.
The morning at the ranch was brimming with vitality. The grass was still dewy, and a gentle breeze caressed their faces, bringing a sense of refreshing tranquility.
Bees emerged from their hives and flew towards the flower fields to collect nectar, while Butterfree fluttered its wings, landing on the rooftop to bask in the warmth of the newly risen sun.
The part-time Dragonite arrived at the ranch one after another, carrying goods and flying off to various parts of the world guided by their Rotom Phones.
Early in the morning, Leeku the Ducklett began diligently practicing its Leek Spin, and next to the fields, a light shower suddenly fell—a result of Dragonite's Rain Dance move helping with irrigation.
The rain poured down, nourishing the crops between the furrows.
Diglett, taking a break from the underground, blinked as it watched this heartwarming scene. It could already envision the abundant fruits that these crops would bear when they matured.
Soon, Naoki would turn them into delicious dishes for them to savor.
Just thinking about it filled Diglett with anticipation, and its mouth began to water.
After feeding all the Pokemon on the ranch, it was already 7:30 in the morning.
Naoki returned home and found Tamago, the Happiny, waiting for him expectantly.
"Goo!"
"Alright, alright, I'll take you there today," Naoki said helplessly.
A few days ago, Tamago had expressed its desire to become a Pokemon Doctor and had asked Naoki to teach it the necessary knowledge.
But Naoki had been busy with the Royal Battle at that time and didn't have the time, so he had put it off until now.
Technically, Naoki should have been using his Champion's reward—the Alola Passport—to embark on the Island Challenge in the Alola region.
However, with the influx of people drawn to the region by the Moto Mask, Naoki decided to wait for the hype to die down a little before beginning his own Island Challenge.
Since he had some time, he figured he could take Tamago to the Pokemon Center in town for a little tour! With that in mind, Naoki prepared to ride Golurk over to see Nurse Joy.
But before he could even step out, several Trainers rushed in from outside.
"Mr. Naoki!"
Naoki was taken aback, recognizing the familiar faces of three young Trainers who had once challenged the ranch trial.
"What brings you here?"
The boy beside her chimed in excitedly, "Frostine! Mr. Naoki's Frostine is also very skilled at using the Finger Wag move, right? Last time, Frostine used Finger Wag and defeated my Pokemon with an amazing technique!"
Naoki's instincts immediately kicked in, but he maintained a smile on his face.
"Oh? You're talking about that, huh? Yes, my Frostine is indeed very talented with the Finger Wag move. But come to think of it, a very skilled senior taught me that."
Naoki chose to activate the Make-believe move!
"Eh?" Hearing this, the boy and girl before him were stunned. "So, Mr. Naoki, you're not Moto Mask?"
"Moto Mask? Isn't that the trainer who stopped the legendary Pokemon conflict?" Naoki exclaimed in shock.
The three of them scrutinized Naoki's expression and noticed he seemed genuinely surprised.
The girl among them looked dejected. "Ah... I thought Mr. Naoki was Moto Mask..."
"That's true. The Alola region is so far away from the Pasio region, and Mr. Naoki has so many Pokemon to take care of on his ranch. He couldn't possibly be away for that long," the boy added.
It would take a long time to travel from Alola to Pasio, even by plane.
"What a shame..." The boy suddenly recalled what Naoki had said earlier. "By the way, Mr. Naoki, you mentioned that a very skilled senior taught you about Frostine, right?"
Naoki nodded. "Yes, that was about seven or eight years ago. Back then, I was still traveling around the world, and I met a mysterious trainer in a forest."
"That person taught me some knowledge about Pokemon nurturing, and later, I applied it to raising Frostine."
"Eh? So, that person was Moto Mask?!?" Naoki widened his eyes, feigning sudden realization, and showcasing his "superb" acting skills.
"So envious!" The innocent boy couldn't help but feel jealous. They didn't notice anything amiss and instead aspired, "I wish I could meet Mr. Moto Mask too!"
However, the girl among them felt that something was slightly off. Perhaps it was a woman's sixth sense?
Seeing that Mr. Naoki seemed occupied, she bid farewell with her companions.
But the three of them didn't leave; instead, they started making inquiries around town.
Eventually, they successfully learned that there was an older man in town who went to Naoki's ranch every day at around 5:00 PM to collect goods.
"Let's ask that uncle!" the girl suggested.
They could ask him if he had seen Mr. Naoki at the ranch when he went to collect the goods, and they would have their answer!
The three of them soon found Zach, who was loading boxes onto a truck in the market.
Zach, wearing a shirt with a towel draped around his neck, took a drag on his cigarette and blew out a puff of smoke as he listened to the three trainers' inquiry. "Is Naoki at the ranch in the afternoon at 5:00?"
"Yes!" The boys and girls nodded vigorously.
"Of course, he is!" Zach clearly remembered those few days when he went to collect the goods, and Naoki had personally handed over the goods to him. He even directed Golurk and Motostoke to help move the Pokemon milk onto his truck!
"Hey, Naoki is such an honest guy," Zach waved his hand and grinned. "He stays at the ranch with his Pokemon all day. The most he does is attend an agricultural exchange once in a while, but that was a long time ago. There's no way he could have gone to the Alola region."
"I see..." The girl thanked Zach sincerely. "Thank you so much, Uncle."
The three of them bid farewell to Zach and turned the corner to a cafe, where they exchanged useful information.
"It seems our guess was completely wrong. Mr. Naoki isn't the mysterious Moto Mask," the girl said.
"Ah, what a shame. I thought we would be the first to discover Moto Mask's true identity," the boy added.
"Never mind. Moto Mask probably wears a mask to conceal his identity. Since that's the case, let's not disturb him," the girl concluded.
At the Pokemon Center in Mementos Town, Naoki alighted from Golurk, holding Little Fufu, and looked up at the Pokemon Center sign. "We're here!" he said to Little Fufu.
"Fuf?" Little Fufu looked up curiously at the peculiar building. It recognized the symbol—it was a Poke Ball used to capture Pokemon!
"This is the Pokemon Center, a place dedicated to treating injured Pokemon."
Nurse Joy and her Chansey stood behind the counter, organizing medical records for injured Pokemon.
Upon seeing Naoki approach, the Chansey wearing a nurse's hat looked up and offered a kind smile.
"Taabune~"
Hearing the sound, Nurse Joy looked up and was surprised to see Naoki. "Oh? Naoki, what brings you here today? Did a Pokemon get hurt?"
"No, none of my Pokemon are injured." Naoki looked down at Little Fufu in his arms and explained, "Little Fufu wants to become a Pokemon Doctor to treat the Pokemon on the ranch, so I thought I'd bring it here for a visit to see how real doctors and nurses work."
Nurse Joy understood immediately. "I see!"
She turned to Little Fufu with a gentle expression. "What a kind-hearted Pokemon! In that case, leave it to me and Chansey!"
"Taabune~" Chansey mirrored her trainer's gentle smile.
"Goo?" Little Fufu looked on curiously.
"Go ahead, let Chansey and me introduce you to the work of a Pokemon Doctor!" Naoki set Little Fufu down.
Chansey walked over, bringing Little Fufu along as she began to show it around the Pokemon Center.
Nurse Joy followed behind. "Mr. Naoki, would you like to come along too?"
"Then I won't refuse." Naoki followed with Goleduk in tow.
The Pokemon Center in reality was almost identical to the one depicted in the anime. It wasn't just a hospital for treating Pokemon but also a comprehensive facility that included a ward, restaurant, guest rooms, and a lounge.
Just like in the anime, passing trainers could enjoy free treatment for their Pokemon, meals, and accommodations.
Severely injured Pokemon were also provided with a room where they could receive intravenous fluids and be monitored until they made a full recovery.
At that moment, several Pokemon lay asleep in the ward, receiving intravenous treatments.
Little Fufu peered through the window, curious about the scene inside.
Nurse Joy explained, "Those Pokemon are here for treatment. They've suffered severe injuries. But tell me, Little Fufu, why do you want to become a doctor?"
"Taabune~?" Chansey helped translate Nurse Joy's question to Little Fufu.
"Goo..." Little Fufu's aspiration was simple: "Goo!" Because those Pokemon needed help!
"Taabune~" Chansey approved of Little Fufu's answer.
Nurse Joy understood Little Fufu's intention and continued, "But becoming a real Pokemon Doctor is very challenging!"
She went on to explain, "Aside from taking care of injured Pokemon, you also need to learn a lot of knowledge. For example, you must be able to identify different types of medicines, observe the condition of injured Pokemon to understand their situation, and then prescribe the right treatment."
"This is very important because using the wrong medicine won't just fail to cure them, it might even worsen their condition and put them in a critical state."
"Additionally, as a doctor, you must also train yourself. You'll need to use Sing to lull hurting Pokemon to sleep and Healing Pulse to heal their wounds."
"Goo!" Little Fufu was undaunted, thanks to Naoki's prior explanation during their journey.
No problem! Babbo the Dugtrio had already assured Little Fufu that there was nothing to worry about. If they encountered any injuries that were beyond their ability to heal, they could always get some Sacred Ash from the item shop.
With that, any Pokemon, no matter how severely injured, could be instantly healed!
"Good, you have great perseverance!" Nurse Joy was impressed by Little Fufu's determination.
She took Little Fufu on a tour of the center and then fetched a few books from her room to give to Naoki.
"These are the notes and insights I made during my training at the Nurse Academy. You can read them to Little Fufu, and Chansey can also help."
"If you have the time, you can bring Little Fufu to the Pokemon Center every day after 5:00 p.m., and Chansey will share some Pokemon nursing experience."
"Then I appreciate your help." Naoki took the notebooks from Nurse Joy.
He decided to repay her kindness by gifting her some watermelons and other farm produce later.
