Chapter 523: Lu Er's Apology (2)
Chapter 523: Lu Er's Apology (2)
Lu Er continued, describing Lu Dabai and Dabainiang's reaction to the incident, "Your father and mother gave me a good scolding after they found out. They said they would find a good daughter-in-law for Lu Yun."
She smiled as she added, "Lu Yun is lazy by nature, but as long as we find him a fierce wife who can keep him in check, he'll work under her whip."
It was impossible to expect him to be as diligent as Shan Zi, but as long as he could be controlled and made to finish his assigned tasks, that would be good enough. In the past, whenever Peng Jia encouraged him, he would slack off with her.
Lu Jiaxin interjected, "Being fierce alone isn't enough. The girl must also have good conduct and come from a decent family."
Lu Er agreed, indicating that Dabainiang shared the same sentiment. Thus, they decided on the niece of Dabai's elder brother-in-law, "That girl is pretty and has a lively and capable personality. Your Dabai elder brother-in-law watched her grow up, so they know her well and there won't be any mistakes."
Lu Jiaxin remained silent on this matter. Firstly, she hadn't met the girl, and secondly, when it came to marriage, as long as the parents approved and the parties involved agreed, that was enough. Although Lu Yun was marrying for the second time, he had no children and came from a good family. Lu Er herself was also an open-minded person, so a bride from such a family wouldn't be a bad choice.
Lu Jiaxin brought up the matter of Tang Sufin's instigation, "I heard that Second Brother was very dissatisfied about this?"
Lu Er scolded Lu Jia, "Don't pay any attention to him. He's always confused and hasn't had a moment of clarity. Jiaxin, let me tell you something from the bottom of my heart. It's not always a good thing to give too much. Things are just fine as they are now. With the house, we've established a foundation in Si Jiucheng, and with the shop, they have a means to support their family. That's more than enough."
Then she continued, "Jiaxin, when I heard that Third Uncle still had money and valuables, I thought that after his hundred years, the money could be left to Shan Zi, and the valuables could be given to you."
"It's not that I have a high level of enlightenment or that I don't love money. I just feel that if Third Uncle hid it so deeply, it must be a treasure. Something similar happened in the village a couple of years ago. A family had a treasure, but the younger generation wasn't careful and let the cat out of the bag. Fortunately, the item was stolen, but the people were unharmed."
"Their treasure was said to be an incense burner from the Qing Dynasty. With Third Uncle's personality, what he hid must be even better than that Qing Dynasty incense burner. Some people would do anything for money, even murder and arson. Once the news gets out, I worry for the safety of Shan Zi's family. So, even if Third Uncle doesn't give these things to you, we won't want them after he's gone."
Lu Jiaxin looked at Lu Er with newfound respect, and sincerely said, "Second Aunt, Second Brother must have accumulated good karma in his past life to be able to marry you."
It was truly admirable that she could connect an incident in the village to their own family, demonstrating such a keen sense of crisis awareness. And even more so, to be able to restrain her desires and make such a difficult choice.
Lu Er shook her head, "Don't praise me like that. I learned all this from dealing with your Dabai. Jiaxin, you don't have to worry about what your Second Brother thinks. He has no say in this family now."
If he continued to create problems, not only would Jiaxin develop a rift with them and become distant, but the eldest son and daughter-in-law would also grow apart from them.
Lu Jiaxin said, "Second Aunt, if you had acted like this earlier, you wouldn't have had to endure the humiliation from the Peng family."
To be blunt, if Peng Xiangye's father had died while saving the Lu family, it would have been reasonable for the Lu family to provide more support. But the man hadn't died, nor had he suffered any disabilities. He had only lain in bed for a couple of months, and the compensation they had already received was more than enough.
Lu Er let out a bitter laugh, "There were many considerations in the village, and with your grandparents making the decisions, I didn't dare go against them."
Now, she no longer had such worries. Her in-laws had passed away, and her eldest brother and sister-in-law supported her in suppressing the Lu Family Clan.
Lu Jiaxin nodded. Now that Lu Er was the decision-maker in the second branch of the Lu family, if anyone from the main branch dared to cause trouble, they could be sent back to their ancestral home.
Lu Jiaxin understood. When your in-laws are in charge, trying to dominate your husband would only make your life difficult. In such situations, you had to learn to feign weakness. Lu Er was indeed a clever woman. It was a pity that she was born in the wrong era; otherwise, she would have been a formidable career woman.
Lu Er brought up the topic of Xiao Qiu again. Ever since she was scammed, Xiao Qiu had been focused on earning money, and she even planned to take over another shop. "Someone introduced a potential suitor to her, but she wasn't interested and said she would consider marriage after she turns 23. Right now, she just wants to make money and buy the shop."
Lu Jiaxin thought it was a good idea. As far as she knew, Xiao Qiu had already bought a house—a flat with four rooms. Her next goal was to buy the second shop.
In the past, Lu Jiaxin might have given the clothing shop to Xiao Qiu, but she had changed her mind. A favor given could be repaid with gratitude or grudge. If Xiao Qiu ever needed help, she would consider it depending on the situation, but giving her money or a house was out of the question now.
"Having your own money gives you confidence. If the man's family treats you badly, you can just move into your own house and not put up with their attitude."
Lu Er nodded and then brought up Lu Tao's matter. "Taozi has found a partner. She is the niece of his leader. Her father is a leader in the Education Bureau, and her mother is a corporate executive. She comes from a good family, but she's an only child. I asked your eldest brother to find out more, and he said that she's good in all aspects, except that she has a bit of a temper."
Since Lu Jiaxin hadn't met the young lady, she didn't feel it was right to comment. "If you're unsure, ask Lu Tao to arrange for you to meet her and observe whether she's just being temperamental or if it's true love. Second Aunt, rumors aren't always true. You know how I was gossiped about in the residential compound."
Sometimes, what you hear might not be the truth, and even what you see might not be the whole truth, let alone when you haven't even met the person.
Lu Er shook her head. "If we meet formally, it will be difficult to object later. I want to go and find out more myself, and then look for an opportunity to get in touch with that young lady."
After she finished speaking, she explained, "Jiaxin, Peng Xiangye has already exhausted me. I can't handle another daughter-in-law with a bad temper."
Lu Jiaxin thought this was reasonable. Marriage involved two families, so it was only right for Lu Er to be cautious. "If that's what you want, then go ahead. Otherwise, if the young lady turns out to be unsuitable, you'll regret it."
Although Lu Er hadn't said it explicitly, Lu Jiaxin could tell from her words that she regretted not stopping Peng Xiangye from marrying Lu Yun.
"Then I'll arrange things at the store."
Lu Jiaxin felt that she should do it discreetly. "Don't tell Lu Tao. It's better to catch them off guard to see their true colors. Also, don't let Second Brother know, or he'll definitely tip them off."
Lu Er was initially taken aback, then let out a bitter smile. "I wouldn't have thought of that if you hadn't reminded me. Jiaxin, thank you!"
Lu Jiaxin invited Lu Er to stay for dinner and sent her back home after the meal. After she left, Lu Jiaxin couldn't help but sigh. "Raising a child brings a lifetime of worries."
She wondered if Lu Er would have the same worries if she had children in the future. Well, as long as she raised her children to be independent, she probably wouldn't have such concerns.
Just then, the phone rang, and Miao Na answered it with a smile. "Boss, it's Mr. Nie's call."
"Ah Zhan..."
Miao Na's shoulders shook at the sickeningly sweet tone in Lu Jiaxin's voice. She quickly retreated from the living room, unable to bear the mushiness.
