Chapter 517: Potion of Potential
Chapter 517: Potion of Potential
The challenging ingredient in the creation of the Potion of Potential was indeed the Sniffing Snuffler plant.
This magical plant, once used as currency by wizards, was already a rare find in the time of Zygmunt Budge.
After Zygmunt discovered the plant's potential in potion-making, its value skyrocketed, pushing it to the brink of extinction.
Four centuries later, the Sniffing Snuffler could only be found in the magical gardens of Europe.
Naturally, attempts have been made to cultivate this valuable plant, just as there is a market for snake eggs from Runespoor breeding.
However, even the most skilled herbologists in the magical gardens have failed to master the art of growing Sniffing Snufflers; they are incredibly delicate and finicky plants.
American herbologists once spent a fortune "acquiring" young Sniffing Snuffler seedlings from the magical gardens. Despite their best efforts and resources, they managed to keep the plants alive but failed to reproduce them successfully. The leaves of their cultivated plants lacked the distinctive coppery sheen.
What they grew was not the Sniffing Snuffler but some peculiar imitation.
Eventually, alchemists studied these odd plants and managed to extract a liquid from them. This extract, when combined with a potion-maker's expertise, resulted in the creation of the Potion of Potential.
Nicholas shared this historical anecdote with Albert, revealing that he had been one of the participants in those early experiments.
Ironically, the American Magical Congress prohibited the creation of the Potion of Potential, but high-ranking officials within the Congress knew about and secretly supported these endeavors, allegedly spending over ten thousand Galleons on the project.
That was thirty years ago.
It was a tumultuous time with Grindelwald wreaking havoc across Europe; they might not have had the opportunity to obtain the Sniffing Snuffler seedlings otherwise.
"The Potion of Potential is banned in the magical world?" Albert guessed the reason for the prohibition.
"Yes, it's banned and considered a serious offense. In your British wizarding laws, it would land you in Azkaban," Nicholas replied with a peculiar expression. "After all, if it weren't prohibited, the Sniffing Snufflers in the magical gardens would likely be stolen within days."
"Makes sense. So, you gave it a new name," Albert said.
"Yes, it's now called the Magical Enhancing Potion," Nicholas said with a smile. "Of course, no one dares to sell it openly."
"After consuming this potion, one may experience temporary discomfort such as feverishness, weakness, blood vessel expansion, and a rapid heartbeat. It requires a certain tolerance for pain," he warned amicably. "But as long as you endure it, you'll be fine."
Without hesitation, Albert broke the seal and drank the Potion of Potential.
At first, he felt nothing, but as the liquid slid down his throat, it felt like he had swallowed some toxic brew.
His throat burned as if engulfed in flames, causing him to clutch his neck and cough violently.
Cela raised an eyebrow, glancing at Nicholas.
"That's one of the minor side effects of the Potion of Potential," Nicholas said calmly. "Katherine experienced the same thing."
Albert's body temperature began to rise, and Nicholas placed a bag of ice on his forehead to cool him down.
His heartbeat quickened, and he could feel his blood rushing through his veins as if his entire body were engulfed in flames, giving him the sensation of ascending to the heavens.
This unpleasant sensation lasted for about ten minutes before gradually fading away, leaving him completely normal again, though drenched in sweat.
"The reaction to the Potion of Potential was quite intense," Albert remarked as he took a deep breath. "I thought I was going to die for a moment there."
"The results should be impressive, though!" Nicholas asked.
"Indeed," Albert said as he felt the changes within him. With a casual wave of his hand, he summoned a glowing orb that floated above his palm. "My magical power has definitely increased.
"
Non-Verbal Magic!" Nicholas murmured, his eyes narrowing as he witnessed Albert cast the Lumos spell without uttering a word or using a wand. It was a simple spell, but many famous wizards struggled to perform it at Albert's level.
"It seems the potion has worked wonderfully," Nicholas commented.
"Not quite," Albert disagreed, extinguishing the glowing orb in his palm. "My magical power is inherently stronger than that of most wizards." With that, he set aside the topic for the moment. "I'm going to take a shower; this feeling is quite uncomfortable."
"I've already asked Jack to prepare it for you," Nicholas informed him.
The bathroom was spacious, enlarged by the Extension Charm, and resembled the prefects' bathroom at Hogwarts. The water temperature was just right, and Albert relaxed against the edge of the tub, opening the skill panel to check the effects of the Potion of Potential.
Indeed, he felt that his magic had noticeably strengthened since consuming the potion.
His Wizarding Bloodline had reached Level 5—an unexpected but pleasant surprise. However, it seemed that Level 5 was not the pinnacle for this skill.
If it weren't for the skill points, he wouldn't dare to imagine how much experience was needed to level up a typical Level 5 skill; it would be like falling into a bottomless pit.
While his magic had indeed strengthened, his overall strength hadn't improved much. He still needed to master more spells and undergo specialized training.
When Albert returned from the bathroom, he found Cela chatting with Nicholas in the hall, with Katherine joining them as well. She eyed Albert curiously, as if trying to discern something from his appearance.
"Are you skilled in potion-making as well?" she asked abruptly.
"Passable," Albert replied nonchalantly.
"I've already prepared the ingredients for the Pepper-Up Potion," Katherine said, still doubtful that Albert could brew such a complex potion, which, in some ways, was even more challenging than the Felix Felicis.
"I have Mr. Dagworth-Granger's improved recipe here," Albert said, noticing the confusion in their eyes and choosing not to hide the truth. "I offered him some suggestions last time."
"You gave a Master Potioneer suggestions?" Katherine couldn't believe her ears.
"Is there a problem?" Albert asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No, no problem," she quickly replied.
"This potion is still undergoing improvements, and the ingredients are slightly different," Albert explained as he picked up a quill and wrote down the required materials on a piece of parchment.
Katherine took the parchment and glanced at it. "Please wait a moment. I'll go prepare it right away." With that, she turned and left.
"Are you planning to follow in Nicolas's footsteps?" Nicholas asked, his brow furrowed as he realized something. "Nicolas's success was due to his possession of the Philosopher's Stone and the ample time he had to master various fields and achieve extraordinary accomplishments."
"Many people have said that to me," Albert acknowledged, taking a sip of his tea. "To be honest, I've never thought about becoming the next Nicolas."
Nicholas turned to Cela, hoping she would persuade Albert.
"Albert has only been in the wizarding world for a few years, and he is the most talented wizard in centuries," Cela explained. "So, I believe he has the talent and ability to succeed."
"A few years? Impossible! Are you saying he was a Muggle-born wizard?" Nicholas was stunned, unable to comprehend how the heir of the Wildsmith family could be a Muggle-born.
"I don't quite understand it myself, but Albert is indeed the heir of the Wildsmith family. The fact that he's here and entered into a contract with your granddaughter is the best proof," Cela said. In truth, she hadn't given it much thought, and whether Albert was a pure-blood or Muggle-born wizard held no importance to her.
"Do wizards marry Muggles?" Nicholas asked, his mind already jumping to conclusions.
While it was unheard of in the American wizarding community, Albert was born in Britain. In the British wizarding world, it was permissible for wizards to marry Muggles, so growing up in the Muggle world wasn't unusual.
