Chapter 514: The Cursed Hospital (12)
Chapter 514: The Cursed Hospital (12)
In the end, Feng Bu Jue still didn’t manage to purchase the beer.
After all, the task bar clearly specified “Chilled Beer.” If he brought back a warm can, he’d likely fail the objective.
Moreover, even if he wanted to buy the beer and immediately return to complete the task, he needed a viable route. The corridor he’d used to reach the first floor earlier was one-way, and with his current physical condition, there was no way he could jump back. He needed to find another way out.
So, Feng Bu Jue temporarily refrained from interacting with the vending machine and instead chose to explore elsewhere.
This hospital had no basement levels—the only facility built underground was the Blood Bank, which was why its location was marked on the first-floor blueprint.
Feng Bu Jue, who had memorized the map, knew this well. He exited through the northern door of the dining hall, swiftly traversed the corridor, and headed straight toward his destination. After three minutes, he arrived at the freight elevator’s door. A line of text was written on the wall beside the elevator: “Basement Levels Blood Bank.”
Feng Bu Jue glanced at the floor display above the elevator, which currently read “1F.” He stepped back half a pace, turned sideways toward the elevator door, grabbed his cleaver in one hand, and pressed the elevator button with the other.
With a ding, the doors opened to reveal an empty cabin. The thick metallic walls and floor weren’t reflective surfaces, and the overhead lighting functioned normally. At first glance… there seemed to be nothing amiss.
To be cautious, Feng Bu Jue quickly pulled out his sunglasses and cameras for a detailed inspection. Even ghosts appeared absent.
After confirming safety, he stepped inside.
The elevator had two control panels at diagonal corners. Both featured standard buttons—open, close, emergency stop. The floor buttons numbered three: “2F,” “1F,” and “B1.”
“Hmm… Can’t reach 3F?” Feng Bu Jue didn’t press B1 yet. Instead, he pressed 2F to test if he could ascend.
The doors closed smoothly, and a low rumble echoed around him. A few seconds later, the doors slid open to reveal the corridor wall marked with “2F.”
Feng Bu Jue scanned both directions with his cameras before stepping out. He followed the corridor briefly, quickly locating a fork. He remembered passing this junction earlier during his escape from Chad’s pursuit and assassination attempt, though he hadn’t turned here back then.
Now retracing his steps, Feng Bu Jue quickened his pace. Minutes later, he returned to the T-junction where the 2F map was posted.
“Perfect. This clears up the layout of the first and second floors,” he muttered, studying the map for several dozen seconds—not to solve puzzles in his mind this time, but to memorize and reinforce his memory.
Within a minute, he turned and left to avoid lingering too long and attracting Chad again.
Next, he returned to the elevator he’d initially used at the scenario’s start, hoping to reach the third floor. But when he pressed the elevator button, a system prompt appeared: [This elevator is malfunctioning and unavailable.]
“Hmph… Fine,” Feng Bu Jue shrugged.
With no choice, he backtracked, trotting back to the elevator connected to the Blood Bank.
Inside the elevator, Feng Bu Jue still didn’t head to the Blood Bank. Instead, he rode to the first floor, rushed to the dining hall, and used his Monster Kingdom Coin to purchase a can of Chilled Beer from the vending machine.
Without delay, he hurried back, the beer still cold. He took the elevator to the second floor, sprinted down the corridor, and reached Room 216.
Gasping for breath, he pushed the door open.
“Hey, did you find my key?” Viktor was the first to speak.
“Haa… haa…” Feng Bu Jue leaned against the doorframe, panting heavily. “Don’t waste my time!” He snapped impatiently before resuming his panting.
Feng Bu Jue was accustomed to running at superhuman speeds in games. Using Lester’s body now left him feeling near death.
“Earlier, during Chad’s pursuit and assassination attempt, the chase wasn’t long enough to notice… but now, after prolonged running, it’s obvious,” he thought. “Lester’s stamina is terrible! He’s worse than me in real life!”
“By the way, I still haven’t received my two bags of Type B blood,” Count Belmont added from his hospital bed. “I can’t smell any blood.”
“Where have you been all this time?” Viktor shrugged, turning to Feng Bu Jue. “Time is money, you know?”
Feng Bu Jue ignored him. Once his breathing steadied, he immediately approached Harpermr.’s bedside and handed him the task item.
“Chilled Beer, Harpermr.”
Harper trembled as he raised an arm toward the can. But the moment he intervened to grab it… his movement was lightning-fast, just like when he’d seized Feng Bu Jue’s wrist earlier.
With one hand, Harper opened the chilled beer and downed the entire can in one gulp.
“Ahhh…” He exhaled in satisfaction, followed by a loud belch.
Feng Bu Jue stood by the hospital bed, silently watching and waiting. When he handed over the beer, he’d exited the game menu, confirming the side quest in the task bar was now marked complete.
“Thank you, young man,” Harper finally spoke after a pause.
For a few seconds, Feng Bu Jue wondered if Harper would even give him a reward.
“Hehe…” Feng Bu Jue chuckled, though he kept it to himself. He’d never stoop to phrases like “It’s my duty” or similar clichés.
“Here, this is my token of gratitude,” Harper said, pulling a key from under his pillow and offering it.
“Again?” Feng Bu Jue felt like vomiting at the sight of keys. Still, he accepted the so-called “reward,” examining it closely:
[Name: Dean’s Office Key]
[Type: Plot-Related]
[Quality: Common]
[Function: Opens the Dean’s Office door]
[Can Be Taken Out of Scenario]
[Background: Running errands for an old man? That’s only fair.]
“If this game had a save function, I’d beg Ouink to kill Chad for me, then sleep in a corner of this corridor tonight…” Feng Bu Jue muttered after reading the description.
“By the way… The Dean’s Office should be on the third floor, right?” He mused while pocketing the key.
“Yes,” Harpermr. surprisingly replied. “It’s in the southern part of the third floor.”
“Oh…” Feng Bu Jue assumed this was another quest trigger. “You gave me this key… Did you need me to do something in the Dean’s Office for you?”
Unfortunately, he overestimated. Harper’s dialogue shifted abruptly: “That beer was delicious…”
“Hmph…” Feng Bu Jue thought, “So you only wanted to hint at the Dean’s Office location…”
[Current Task Updated, Main Quest Updated] Suddenly, a system prompt echoed.
Feng Bu Jue froze. “Main Quest change?”
He immediately opened his menu, checking the task bar. The original main quest [Hold Your Post Until Dawn] was struck through, replaced by a new directive: [Defeat the Dean and Escape the Hospital.]
“Haha!” Feng Bu Jue burst into laughter, finally feeling proactive.
“What are you laughing at? Go find my key!” Viktor’s shrill voice cut in.
“This one?” Feng Bu Jue smirked, pulling out [Victor’s Key] and waving it.
“Yes! Give it to me!” Viktor stretched his hands like a child demanding a toy.
“Hmph…” Feng Bu Jue sneered, stepping toward the door cautiously. “I know your secret… You despicable opportunist… Ergot distilled liquor… Cheap to produce but deadly to races addicted to alcohol, right?”
“Are you trying to blackmail me?” Viktor, ever the goblin, was unusually perceptive.
“If I were you,” Feng Bu Jue avoided a direct answer, “after acquiring a unique resource for wealth, I’d hire powerful mages to shield my cellar with an unbreakable magic barrier. I’d keep only one unique magic key on me…” He shook the key. “So this isn’t just a key—it’s your entire stock of ergot distilled liquor and its recipe.”
These claims lacked concrete evidence. They were Feng Bu Jue’s deductions based on [Blood Wraith Must Die] and [Victor’s Key] item backgrounds, along with Monster Kingdom lore.
Yet… he seemed to have guessed right.
“You scoundrel! You’re ruthless! What do you want?” Viktor reluctantly conceded.
Upon hearing this, Feng Bu Jue inwardly rejoiced but maintained his composure. “What do you have?”
“I have a teleportation stone to the third floor,” Viktor replied.
“What?” Feng Bu Jue blinked, realizing instantly it was likely a side quest reward. “Anything else?”
“Money,” Viktor answered. “You want more? By the way… I have a niece who doesn’t mind marrying other races…”
“Equipment! Equipment! Equipment!” Feng Bu Jue roared.
“Are you insane?” Viktor snapped. “Where would I get equipment? I’m a reseller—I find buyers before acquiring goods. I keep only money, no inventory… Err, I mean goods.”
“Money’s useless!” Feng Bu Jue yelled. Monster Kingdom currency, as indicated by the Coin’s background, was notoriously unreliable.
“Fine! You want ‘stuff,’ right?” Viktor retrieved two items from his nightstand, offering them. “This and the teleport stone—are you trading?”
“Tch… Just one extra item, huh…” Feng Bu Jue muttered. “Might as well.”
“Trade, definitely,” Feng Bu Jue agreed without hesitation. “Your key’s useless to me anyway.” He stepped forward, exchanging items.
“You scoundrel! I’ll file a complaint!” Viktor grumbled, tucking the key into his robe.
Count Belmont chuckled mockingly, “Haha, you shady merchant—this is karma.”
The two bickered anew.
Meanwhile, Feng Bu Jue examined the two items in his hand before exiting the room.
Before heading to the third floor, he had one side quest left. Since other task lines pointed toward the Dean, the reward from Count Belmont was likely tied to the main quest—he couldn’t afford to overlook it.
