Chapter 513: Ivan: Sigh, It's Not as Bad as You Make It Sound!
Chapter 513: Ivan: Sigh, It’s Not as Bad as You Make It Sound! (Combined)
Ivan was experiencing his first time witnessing the death of a comrade, and his emotions were complex.
However, he was well aware that reality wasn’t a fairy tale, and in large-scale battles, it was impossible for no one to die!
At the same time, more questions flooded Ivan’s mind. He was eager to understand what had happened over the past few months.
Asia naturally noticed Ivan’s confusion but didn’t immediately provide answers, as this wasn’t the place to talk. She called for everyone to return to their base first before discussing further.
The Wizards nodded in agreement, and over twenty of them Apparated away from the spot.
Ivan was also pulled along by Asia to Apparate.
With a spatial shift, when he regained his senses, he found himself outside the doors of Borgin and Burkes.
Of course, it wasn’t called that anymore. The large sign now read "St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries."
The interior of the shop had changed significantly since his last visit. The front counter now displayed many potions, including Wolfsbane Potion. There were also a row of chairs and tables along the wall, likely for patients to wait their turn.
It looked like a private clinic!
When Ivan passed through a curtain, he discovered a different world.
In front of him was a spacious hall large enough to accommodate hundreds of people. The cabinets and shelves that the original master, Bogrod, had placed here had all been removed, making the space seem even larger.
As he stepped inside, several golden flames suddenly erupted from both sides of the hall. The floor was covered with dense bricks, and some Runic Inscriptions were intricately embedded into the brick patterns, forming a large Protective Array. Combined with the overall gray-black decor, the hall appeared solemn and dignified.
"Remember the deed you gave me? I had Dawgert find a way to secure the usage rights of this Magic Shop, and we decided to turn it into a temporary base!" Asia explained softly as she led Ivan inside.
Ivan nodded. Sirius Black had mentioned this to him a few months ago.
At the time, he thought Dawgert had tricked him, never imagining the shop would be used for this purpose.
Once they entered the hall, Asia stopped and turned to Fenrir and the others who were following.
"Fenrir, I need you to notify the others and have them come immediately! As for Dawgert—"
"I understand. I’ll take care of the injured and the captives!" Dawgert immediately grasped Asia’s meaning and took the wounded and several Dark Wizard captives to the treatment room.
More people? Ivan glanced at Asia in surprise. He had assumed the twenty or so people gathered here were all there were, but it seemed Asia had rallied more support than he had imagined.
After Dawgert left with a few others, Asia instructed the Wizards who had just returned from battle to rest in the hall while they waited for the others to arrive.
After making some simple arrangements, Asia turned to Ivan. "Let’s go upstairs to the inner room to talk!"
Ivan had no objections and followed Asia up the stairs to a room. The noise from below gradually faded, and he guessed that a soundproofing spell must have been cast here.
Just as Ivan was thinking this, Asia turned and embraced him, a faint lavender scent wafting into his nose.
Ivan was momentarily stunned but quickly recovered, returning the embrace. They had been apart for over half a year, and he missed Asia deeply.
Although they had only spent a few months together, Ivan genuinely felt Asia’s care and accepted his identity.
Deep down, Ivan felt a bit guilty. He knew he was taking the place of the real Ivan Hals and enjoying what rightfully belonged to the other.
After a moment of warmth, Asia released Ivan and affectionately bumped her forehead against his, asking about his experiences at school over the past half year.
She had been both surprised and amazed when she saw in the Daily Prophet that Ivan had been nominated for the Order of Merlin, First Class.
She was well aware of the significance of this medal!
Currently, in the entire British Wizarding World, only seven people had received the Order of Merlin, First Class, and all of them, except Ivan, were distinguished figures in their respective fields.
Ivan didn’t mind sharing his "great achievements" at school with Asia.
So, he half-truthfully recounted how he discovered Peter’s name on the Marauder's Map, how he used his knowledge of the Transfiguration Spell to uncover his identity, and how he “coincidentally” met Sirius Black, ultimately resolving an injustice that had lasted over a decade and sending Peter Pettigrew to Azkaban.
Asia listened quietly with a smile on her lips. She even praised Ivan generously when he described how he deduced Peter’s identity.
However, when she heard the names Sirius Black and Lupin, Asia couldn’t help but frown.
“Mom, do you know them?” Ivan quickly asked.
“They were once your father’s comrades,” Asia replied, somewhat irritably. She had always believed that during the last Wizarding War, if it weren’t for these people encouraging Hals to stay and fight the powerful Voldemort, they would have long since moved to the relatively safer North America.
Ivan was curious and wanted to ask more, but Asia immediately changed the subject.
“I saw in the newspaper that your Order of Merlin, First Class, was jointly nominated by Dumbledore and Fudge?” Asia was puzzled, unable to understand how Ivan managed to get the two most powerful figures in the Wizarding World to nominate him.
“Ah, this—” Ivan certainly couldn’t reveal that he had used Dumbledore’s identity to write to the Order of Merlin’s chairman. It wouldn’t be good to blame the old professor either, so he blurted out a lie.
“It was Minister Fudge who proposed it! He thought that by capturing one of the Dark Lord’s lackeys, Peter, I had corrected a long-standing mistake by the Ministry of Magic. He was also very grateful for my previous significant contributions to the Wizarding World, so he convinced Professor Dumbledore to nominate me together.”
Ivan rambled on, but Asia looked at him with a strange expression, not believing a word.
Since they would need to deal with the Ministry of Magic in the future, Asia had been asking Dawgert about the Ministry’s affairs recently. She knew that Fudge and Dumbledore didn’t get along well and even had significant conflicts.
Ivan shrugged. There was nothing he could do if Asia didn’t believe him. But then he thought of something and said with a touch of resentment.
“Unfortunately, due to the Ministry of Magic’s negligence, I managed to catch Peter Pettigrew, but he escaped from Azkaban.”
At this, Ivan became somewhat angry. He had gone through great lengths not only to clear Sirius Black’s name but also to prevent Peter from escaping as he had in the original timeline.
Without Peter’s help, Voldemort wouldn’t have recovered so quickly. Time was what Ivan needed most.
If he could delay things by five or ten years, Ivan was confident he could enhance his strength to surpass Voldemort. Then, even if the Dark Lord returned, he could eliminate him!
“It’s just a Death Eater. If he escaped, he escaped. We can deal with him later when we have the time!” Asia consoled him.
Unlike Ivan, she wasn’t too concerned about the whereabouts of a mere Death Eater.
In her view, Peter couldn’t cause much trouble, and the Dark Lord had been “dead” for over a decade. Now, he was like a stray dog, having lost all his power, and was a thing of the past.
Ivan silently shook his head but didn’t argue. The long peace had made most people forget the urgency of the war years. Few would now believe that Voldemort would return soon.
However, Ivan didn’t regret the actions that had made him an enemy of Voldemort.
From the end of his first year, when he thwarted Voldemort’s resurrection plans and left those two large dungbombs, their relationship had deteriorated to the point of no return. This was why he had specifically gone to the Black Family Manor to destroy a Horcrux.
“By the way, Mom, what exactly happened in Knockturn Alley these past few days? Why was Walker being pursued by those people? I saw an Auror; were they from the Wizarding Market?” Ivan asked.
“You’re right, they are the last resistance in Knockturn Alley!” Asia nodded and began to explain the situation.
Last night, she received a message that Notte and other leaders of the Pureblood Families were planning to meet at an estate to discuss how to deal with her.
After confirming the authenticity of the message, she brought a large group of people to launch a surprise attack and capture them all at once!
The last resistance? Ivan found Asia’s description a bit odd but didn’t dwell on it. Considering the recent events, he quickly guessed what was going on.
"So, the information you received was actually false, and they lured you there. Their true target was Walker and the others who stayed here?" Ivan guessed.
"Sort of, but not entirely", Asia sighed. The information was deliberately released, but the spokespersons of the Pureblood Families were indeed in that manor. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been fooled.
However, the other side was clearly prepared. After a fierce battle, they only managed to capture a member of the Nott Family, without gaining any significant advantage.
Then, she received a message through her communication device, informing her that Walker and others were under attack. She rushed over as quickly as possible, but unfortunately, she arrived too late to save the Wizard who had gone out with Walker to gather intelligence.
As for why they wanted to capture Walker, Asia believed it was to investigate how he could transform at will, even when it wasn't a full moon.
After all, Fenrir and his group had performed exceptionally well in previous battles. Their ability to fight and withstand attacks had been crucial in maintaining the upper hand against the enemy!
Ivan smiled, fully aware of how difficult it was to deal with a rational werewolf. Otherwise, he wouldn't have restricted the sale of the Improved Wolfsbane Potion.
*Knock knock knock*
As Ivan and Asia were chatting, a knock sounded at the door.
Asia frowned, annoyed that someone was interrupting her conversation with Ivan. Considering the person might have something important to say, she composed herself and said, "Come in!"
*Click*
Dawgert, with a smile on his face, pushed open the door and walked in.
The middle-aged man, who was usually disheveled, now had a thick, neatly combed brown hair that looked well-maintained. His usual drab, earthy black and gray Wizard Robes had been replaced with a red and black outfit. Most importantly, his demeanor had changed dramatically, making him look much more spirited and confident.
It was only then that Ivan could see a hint of the young, handsome Dawgert from the portrait.
"Asia, young Ivan, I hope I'm not interrupting anything", Dawgert said as he closed the door.
Asia reluctantly shook her head and asked, "How are the captives? Have they agreed to talk?"
"Those Dark Wizards were quite forthcoming. They spilled everything once I started questioning them. They even cried and begged to join us, it seems Ivan scared them quite a bit!" Dawgert glanced at Ivan, unable to resist asking, "Ivan, how did you do it? They said you killed three people, then turned into a Dementor and charged at them, and then transformed into a six or seven-meter-tall Giant."
During the interrogation, Dawgert almost thought they were delirious.
"Was it the effect of a Fear Curse?" Asia guessed, equally curious and having forgotten to ask earlier.
"No!" Ivan shook his head. Considering that his blood magic had already been exposed, he decided not to hide it from them. "How should I put it? I'm a special Animagus, capable of transforming at will!"
Ivan didn't mention the blood magic, opting for a more understandable explanation.
"Animagus?" Asia looked at Ivan with a mix of surprise and doubt.
She knew about Animagi, a high-level Transfiguration that could be dangerous to learn. Even she hadn't mastered it, yet Ivan had succeeded?
However, in her experience, most Wizards could only transform into one animal that matched their personality. They couldn't choose their form or transform into magical creatures.
"So, you really turned into a Dementor and a Giant?" Dawgert whistled, having thought Ivan had merely used some magic to deceive them.
"Not exactly. It was just a superficial transformation", Ivan sighed, shaking his head. He knew that unless he fully integrated the bloodlines of those magical creatures, he could only mimic a part of their attributes at a great magical cost.
Dawgert was speechless. From the information he had obtained during the interrogation, Ivan's Dementor form was immune to magic, and his Giant form could smash through a street wall with a single slap. How could this be considered just a superficial transformation?
