Liam’s preparations for Evelyn were not particularly complicated. By that evening, they had moved everything they needed to the ground. This included the box containing Imhotep’s internal organs, the box holding the Golden Book of the Sun found at the base of the Sun God statue, and the stone coffin containing Imhotep’s mummies, which they found at the base of the Reaper statue.
“What’s this?” Evelyn asked, looking at the half bottle of bright red liquid Liam handed her. She had just seen Liam and Hermione use a silver cup to pour the liquid into the bottle and take sips from it.
“It’s a stimulant,” Liam explained. “We need to work through the night. If everything goes smoothly, we should be able to resolve the potential Curse by noon tomorrow.”
For the rest of the night, Liam and the others built a three-tiered, circular altar that stood taller than two people. They placed the stone coffin, which was almost solid black smoke from Liam’s Heavenly Eye perspective, on top of the altar. Then, they began embedding Sunlight Crystals into the altar, taking out bag after bag of the crystals. To avoid a magical reaction, this process had to be done entirely by hand. Consequently, the five of them worked through the night and well into the morning, with Gill being the only one who stayed out to prevent the mummies from coming to life.
“Those aren’t just gems. There’s no need to pocket them,” Liam said helplessly during their meal, noticing that Jonathan’s pocket flashed like a camera’s flash when he sat down. “If you really like them, I can give you a whole bag of Sunlight Crystals, but please don’t take them from here. This is crucial for all our lives.”
After inspecting the altar, Liam ordered the robots to dig eight large pits around it, aligning them with the cardinal directions. They then filled these pits with 30 cubic meters of Sunlight Crystals.
“Alright, the final step is to open this coffin and expose the mummies, the source of the Curse, to the natural environment,” Liam said as the sun climbed to its highest point in the sky.
In his previous life, Liam had read about many time travelers who came to this world. Each of them, without exception, allowed Imhotep to be resurrected. They then engaged in various battles of wits and strength with him, ultimately paying a heavy price to defeat him. During this process, Imhotep caused the Ten Plagues, which killed countless innocent people.
Liam couldn’t understand how these time travelers, knowing the plot, could still allow this man to be resurrected. While Imhotep’s love story was sympathetic, after 3000 years of torment, he had become a thoroughly evil wraith. The stories made it clear that he treated humans with utter disregard, slaughtering the innocent at will. Liam believed that the best course of action was to eliminate him completely.
So, when Liam found himself in this world, he chose a straightforward and permanent solution. He had kept the key in his Spatial Bag all along. Perhaps due to the approval of the world’s will, he did not encounter the issues other time travelers faced, such as Evelyn somehow obtaining the key and reciting the resurrection spell under the influence of Cosmic Consciousness. As a result, Imhotep remained quietly in his coffin.
After calling the others, the five of them climbed the steps to the altar. Liam took the key from his Spatial Bag, examined it, and inserted it into the hexagonal slot on the coffin, turning it to unlock the trap inside.
“Let’s see what the source of this Curse really is,” Liam said, casting the Bubble-Head Charm over everyone with Hermione’s help. The four of them then lifted the coffin lid together.
“This, this can’t be possible,” Evelyn exclaimed, her voice filled with shock. Inside the coffin, the mummies, though with a large hole in the head and a wide-open mouth, were not the dried, withered bodies they expected. Instead, their skin and muscles were only slightly decayed, with most of the body still intact.
“No,” Hermione said. Even though she didn’t know much about archaeology, after following Liam through so many worlds and witnessing so many deaths, she realized that the body in front of her looked more like it had died within the last month, not three thousand years.
At this moment, Jonathan leaned over to search for possible gold and jewelry in the coffin but was disappointed to find nothing. However, after a thorough search, he noticed many long, deep marks on the inside of the coffin lid that had been lifted. “What’s this?”
“Finger marks,” Liam said, gesturing with his hand on the coffin lid. “Considering the mummy isn’t wrapped in linen and we found some ashes of decayed linen in the corner of the coffin, we can deduce that this mummy was still alive when they were placed inside. Hence, the linen was torn off during the struggle.”
As Liam finished speaking, everyone on the altar drew in a sharp breath. Even though Liam and Hermione had their hands stained with blood before, as Liam often said, killing was one thing, but such cruel torture was simply too much.
“And it’s not just that,” Liam continued, picking up a few black beetle skeletons from the ashes at the bottom of the coffin. “These are some kind of flesh-eating beetles. They not only locked this person alive in the coffin but also poured flesh-eating beetles inside.”
“Vermin Devouring Punishment,” Evelyn identified the situation accurately. “This is one of the most malevolent and irrevocable curses in ancient Egypt. According to records, they never used this punishment because legend says that anyone who suffered it would come back to life and bring great disaster to all of Egypt.”
With this, Evelyn turned to Liam and Hermione with a grim expression. “So, he is the source of the curse you mentioned. If he’s someone who has undergone the Vermin Devouring Punishment, he indeed qualifies as a great evil.”
“Death is just the beginning,” Hermione said, recognizing the ancient Egyptian text Imhotep had etched into the coffin lid with his fingers. She looked at Liam. “Could it be that he, like us, can return from death?”
"Like us?" Jonathan, who had been standing idly by, overheard Hermione's words and stared at Liam and Hermione in shock. However, Liam ignored his gaze and said to Evelyn, "Alright, we're going to perform a magical ritual to completely eradicate the evil. You and your brother are just ordinary people, so I suggest you retreat to the outside of the ruins."
“Alright,” Evelyn nodded and turned to leave with her brother, with Rose Crystal following to protect them. However, they didn’t go far, stopping behind a sand dune to observe the altar through binoculars.
Liam noticed this but said nothing. Instead, he and Hermione went to the altar and opened the two boxes containing the scriptures, then moved the Canopic Jars with Ansona’s internal organs to the side of the mummy on the altar.
“Do you feel it?” Liam asked Hermione after placing the two scriptures on either side of the altar.
“I feel it,” Hermione nodded. “When we opened the box, a trace of Death Aura marked us, but with our strength, it’s easy to erase.”
“No need to erase it,” Liam said. “Now, try to use the power of death to draw out everything in these ancient ruins that carries the same Death Aura. I can clear it all at once.”
Hermione nodded and made a gesture with her hands. Soon, a faint black mist flowed from her fingertips, spreading across the ground and seeping into the ancient ruins. Before long, a rustling sound began to emanate from the ground.
