Chapter 512: An Opportunity Long Predestined
Chapter 512: An Opportunity Long Predestined
"I wonder how that paper maniac managed to track me down. Was it a special ability, or mere coincidence..." Lu Chen mused to himself. "If it's been stalking me all this time, then things could get troublesome."
Having escaped from the Ghost Mire, Lu Chen believed he was out of harm's way. Yet, encountering a possessed cultivator with a maniacal spirit lurking within was an unwelcome surprise. He was grateful for his thorough preparations, which likely saved him from falling into a deadly trap.
Weaving swiftly through the jungle, Lu Chen kept a vigilant eye through the eyes of the Void Nightmare and the Cloud-Treading Lynx. After a long while without any sign of the maniac, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"It's about time I went looking for that old ghost, Xuan Yin," he decided. "He interrupted my claim on the treasure within the stone coffin, depriving my Spirit Infant Fruit of the nourishment it needed. I must settle the score with him." A cold smile played at the corners of Lu Chen's mouth.
Back at the Treasure Pavilion, the stall owner had been intimidated by Xuan Yin's cultivation and relinquished the mysterious stone coffin to the skinny old man, forcing Lu Chen to give up on his prize. However, a thorn remained embedded in Lu Chen's heart, and he instructed the Demon Ghost Vine to remember the old man's aura so that he could seize the next opportunity to reclaim what was rightfully his.
The Demon Ghost Vine was exceptionally sensitive to auras, especially those of spiritual plants. If the skinny old man was within a certain range, the vine would be able to locate him.
Gray tendrils of the vine emerged from Lu Chen's sleeves, their tips raised high as they gently pointed in a specific direction.
"Over there?" Lu Chen sought confirmation from the vine.
All the gray tendrils that had sprouted from the Demon Ghost Vine nodded in unison.
"Good. Looks like I can take back that stone coffin," Lu Chen thought. "If I recall correctly, that old ghost Xuan Yin also mentioned having a Fifth-Rank spirit plant unique to his sect. In that case, I won't hold back."
Lu Chen's cultivation was slightly stronger than the old man's. With careful planning and the array of Fifth-Rank treasures at his disposal, along with nearly sixty Fourth-Rank sword talismans, he felt confident in his chances, estimating a ninety-eight percent probability of victory.
Following the direction indicated by the Demon Ghost Vine, Lu Chen soon caught sight of the skinny old man through the shared vision of the high-flying Void Nightmare. He estimated the old man's speed and their likely point of convergence.
"Hmm?" The old man sensed the presence of another cultivator ahead and cautiously came to a halt, sweeping the area with his spiritual sense. A smile tugged at his lips, and he quickened his pace, resembling a vulture as he descended before Lu Chen.
"Well, well, if it isn't a familiar face," the old man cackled. "I didn't expect someone of your meager cultivation level, merely at the mid-stage of Foundation Establishment, to escape that ghostly quagmire."
"But your luck ends here," the old man continued. "That stone coffin I acquired from you at the Treasure Pavilion presented me with a significant opportunity. And now, right after escaping from the maniac's grasp, I encounter you again, bringing me yet another opportunity!" The skinny old man's laughter sent chills down Lu Chen's spine.
A bloodied, greenish-black infant crawled out from the old man's back, its grayish-white eyes fixed on Lu Chen as it licked the blood from its hands and body.
"Is that so?" Lu Chen chuckled softly, his expression calm and unperturbed. "If our cultivations were on par, you might have the right to say that. But for a mere mid-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator to dare utter such arrogance... It's time for my Grudge Infant to make a meal of you!"
Upon hearing Lu Chen's words, Xuan Yin paused, suspecting a hidden scheme. He carefully probed Lu Chen with his spiritual sense.
However, Lu Chen's true cultivation was veiled by the Clear Cicada Wing, and his spiritual energy was carefully restrained. Despite the old man's caution, he couldn't detect Lu Chen's actual strength.
"Roar!"
A majestic dragon's roar reverberated, sending sound waves crashing like sharp weapons, enveloping all the vengeful souls.
Under the intense sonic assault, the vengeful souls nearly dissipated, their forms almost vanishing. Even the emaciated old man behind them felt his blood and qi surge, his mind reeling from the residual force of the sound waves.
As he snapped back to his senses, he realized something was amiss and was about to react when a silver-white light flashed in his eyes.
A spinning spike had pierced his brain before he could react.
"Ah!!!"
In an instant, he felt his soul being torn apart by a sharp presence, divided in two. The excruciating pain made his head feel like it was about to explode.
The emaciated old man was experienced and knew he was at a severe disadvantage. He bit his tongue hard, forcing his mind to regain some clarity.
Before he could react further, countless sword auras howled towards him.
Considering that Lu Xuan had reached the perfect Foundation Establishment stage, Lu Chen did not hold back, using seven or eight fourth-rank sword talismans at once to strike the emaciated old man whose soul had just been critically wounded.
Amidst the towering waves, infinite sword auras filled the air. The scorching sun in the sky and the falling meteorites added to the onslaught, creating a world of sword energy around the emaciated old man.
He knew he had reached a critical juncture and could no longer hold back. He summoned the Grudge Infant, which he had nourished with his essence blood, into his body.
Instantly, his flesh and blood expanded rapidly, forming a hill of flesh that resembled a mountain.
Countless bloody arms sprouted from the flesh mountain, and thousands of Grudge Infants squeezed together, their features twisted and dense, emitting sharp, terrifying shrieks.
The endless sword auras landed on the flesh mountain, carving away flesh and blood, but the layers upon layers of flesh mitigated much of their force.
When Lu Chen first laid eyes on the flesh mountain, he knew that Xuan Yin had resorted to his ultimate move. With a thought, a golden jade booklet silently appeared before him.
The jade booklet opened quietly, emitting a crisp cry. A several-zhang-long vermillion Golden Crow shadow flew out from within its pages.
The Golden Crow was enveloped in platinum and golden flames, exuding an extremely yang and robust aura, carrying boundless might as it descended upon the flesh mountain.
"No!"
Amidst the countless vengeful souls on the flesh mountain, one could vaguely make out the emaciated old man's features.
He sensed the world-destroying might of the flames on the Golden Crow and let out a desperate roar.
Before his voice could fade, he was burned to black ash by the platinum flames, forming a thick layer on the ground.
Lu Chen's spiritual sense swept over the remains, confirming that the emaciated old man was dead beyond resurrection. A smile curved his lips.
"Fate has long predetermined whose opportunity this would be."
"From the moment you took my treasure from the stone coffin, your fate was sealed."
"You shouldn't have dared to wrong my spiritual plant in the slightest."
He floated before the thick layer of black ash, and the dimmed Golden Crow shadow flew back into the Pure Yang True Fire Manual.
"Thankfully, I paid attention and didn't let the Golden Crow burn the heretic's storage bag as well, or my efforts would've been for naught."
With a thought, a grayish-black cloth bag floated before Lu Chen.
