Chapter 51: Spare the Forbidden Forest, It Can No Longer Support a Dragon...
"Thanks", Hagrid wiped the water droplets from his face.
Although Ivan had extinguished the fire in time, Hagrid's beard was still singed, uneven, and looked quite strange.
"Hagrid, are you okay?" Ivan asked.
"I'm fine, it's just that Norbert is a bit too lively. Maybe it's because he just hatched, and he's too excited", Hagrid didn't seem to care about his burnt beard and instead tried to find a reasonable explanation for Norbert's behavior.
You call this lively?
Ivan looked at Norbert's mouth full of sharp teeth and the sparks occasionally shooting from his nose, and his lips twitched. Hagrid's love for large, fierce creatures was nothing short of indulgent.
Thinking about this, Ivan suddenly realized that raising a dragon for blood might not be as simple as he had initially thought.
The sudden accident also made Harry and Ron break out in a cold sweat, while Hermione angrily said:
"This isn't something that can be explained away as being lively, it almost burned you! Hagrid!"
"It's all right now", Hagrid muttered softly.
"Hermione, if I have time, I'll help keep an eye on him. It shouldn't be a big problem!" Ivan also tried to persuade her.
"This is a Fire Dragon! It will grow as big as a house in just a couple of months!" Hermione glared at Ivan with obvious dissatisfaction.
"If someone finds out that Hagrid is illegally raising a Fire Dragon, Hagrid will be sent to Azkaban!"
"We just need to send Norbert away before that happens. Ron, your brother Charlie is in Romania studying Fire Dragons, right? Once Norbert is a bit bigger, we can ask Charlie to release him into the wild", Ivan suggested.
He only wanted to obtain Dragon Blood, so he didn't really care about Norbert's future.
"Send Norbert away? No, you can't do that! I'm his mother, he's so fragile. What if he gets bullied in the wild? No one can separate us!" Hagrid panicked.
Bang~
Just as Hagrid finished speaking, the teacup on the table was knocked to the ground by Norbert's tail and shattered. Then, Norbert used his mouth full of sharp teeth to fiercely attack a metal can, biting it until it was dented and clawed a hole in it.
The ferocious display only strengthened everyone's resolve to send Norbert away. Ivan felt that if Norbert were sent to Romania, it would be the local wildlife that should be worried.
"You can't keep it forever, Hagrid!" Hermione reminded him.
"Maybe we can put it in the Forbidden Forest", Hagrid suggested wildly, patting his chest in assurance.
"You can rest assured, I have a lot of experience with releasing animals. I've done it many times before, and Aragog is doing just fine in the Forbidden Forest, never hurting anyone!"
"Aragog! You're raising other things in the Forbidden Forest?" Harry looked at Hagrid in shock, realizing that this wasn't the first time Hagrid had raised dangerous creatures.
"No, no, nothing at all, you must have misunderstood", Hagrid hurriedly defended himself, but his explanation sounded weak.
"Aragog is an Acromantula", Ivan said.
By revealing Aragog's identity, Ivan hoped to keep Harry and the others away from the Forbidden Forest this semester, to avoid running into Quirrell who was wandering there. Although there was no threat of Malfoy ratting them out, they were unlikely to venture into the Forbidden Forest.
"How did you know Aragog is an Acromantula?" Hagrid looked at Ivan in surprise. He hadn't mentioned Aragog's identity just now, or had he accidentally let it slip at some other time?
"A giant spider? How big can a spider be?" Harry was very curious.
"Probably about the size of this room, maybe a bit smaller?" Ivan glanced around Hagrid's hut, then thought about the giant spider from the original story. Including those long legs, it should be about that size.
"You have to believe me, Aragog is a good boy and won't bite anyone", Hagrid said defensively, though he seemed a bit guilty.
But Harry and the others didn't believe a word of it. Ron, in particular, imagined what a spider the size of a house would look like and thought it was a nightmare!
"I swear I'll never go into the Forbidden Forest!" Ron exclaimed, looking distraught.
"
"But I just got him", Hagrid said reluctantly, looking at Norbert with longing.
"We can wait a month for Norbert to grow a bit before sending him away. If he's too small, he won't be able to survive in Romania on his own", Ivan suggested a compromise.
After hesitating for a long time, Hagrid finally agreed. Hermione, Harry, and the others had no objections, as Ivan was right: a newly hatched Norbert wouldn't be able to survive in the wild.
Deciding to send Norbert away in a month, Hagrid was downcast for a while before he rallied and cherished the remaining time with Norbert even more.
Ivan looked at the ugly but cute little Fire Dragon, his concern no less than Hagrid's. He was already thinking about how to secretly draw a vial of blood from Norbert without Hagrid noticing.
However, since the Bloodline Fusion Potion still needed some time to brew, Ivan had to be patient. Once blood was outside the body for more than three days, its activity would significantly decrease, and Ivan wasn't sure if this would affect the Potion's effectiveness.
Before that, Ivan decided to bond with Norbert first, just like he did with Fawkes. This way, he wouldn't face too much resistance when drawing blood later.
With this in mind, Ivan successfully became a dragon keeper, or more colloquially, a poop scooper, over the next few days.
At first, Ivan thought raising a dragon would be a novel and enjoyable experience. However, after a few days, he found it novel but not at all enjoyable.
As a Norwegian Ridgeback, Norbert was incredibly temperamental. For example, a sneeze could set fire to the furniture, or he would chew on the bed and fireplace, leaving marks everywhere. Occasionally, he would get extremely hyper and turn Hagrid's hut into a mess.
By the end of each day, he had to cast Aguamenti and countless Reparo spells multiple times.
Otherwise, the hut would have collapsed long ago.
As the owner of the hut, Hagrid didn't mind at all, even though he had to sleep in the grass the previous night because his bed was burned. It wasn't until the next afternoon that Ivan used a Reparo spell to restore his bed to its original state.
Even so, Hagrid insisted that Norbert was just a bit active, which was a sign of good health in all babies.
