Chapter 509: A Fighter Against the Dark Lord, a Deserving Hero!
Chapter 509: A Fighter Against the Dark Lord, a Deserving Hero! (Combined 4000 Words)
London, 12 Grimmauld Place,
With a spatial distortion, several figures appeared out of thin air in the living room of the Black Family Manor.
"Phew, that was close. Just a little longer, and we might not have made it back", Ivan said, beads of cold sweat on his forehead. In the last few seconds before their departure, the Fiendfyre Phoenix had completely slipped out of his control. If the Apparition had been just a bit slower, the consequences would have been dire.
"I know, and you'd better not use such dangerous Dark Magic again", Sirius Black warned him earnestly.
Sirius Black felt that this loss of control might not be entirely bad, as it would likely give Ivan a much-needed lesson.
Ivan nodded solemnly.
However, Sirius Black's expectations were somewhat different from reality. While Ivan recognized the danger of Fiendfyre, he also saw its unparalleled destructive power.
In the cave, the Fiendfyre Phoenix, fueled by thousands of Inferi and swelling to several dozen meters in length, was the most powerful Magic he had ever encountered!
Apart from using Apparition to escape, Ivan couldn't find any way to suppress it.
If he could master this power and use it in battle, his strength would rise to a new level. Relying on the unique properties of Fiendfyre, he could potentially take on a dozen Wizards at once!
Of course, under normal circumstances, Fiendfyre wouldn't have enough fuel to grow to such a size.
Before mastering a Counter-Curse to control Fiendfyre, Ivan didn't dare to use it on such a large scale again. Recklessly casting this spell would be like courting death with the enemy.
As Ivan was thinking, hurried footsteps came from the inner room, followed by a familiar voice.
"Sirius Black, Ivan, Professor Lupin, thank goodness you're back!" Harry exclaimed, rushing forward to hug Sirius Black.
He had been on edge all day, alone in the Black Family Manor. Upon hearing the commotion, he had run out as quickly as possible.
Seeing everyone safe, Harry breathed a sigh of relief, though the sight of Lupin in werewolf form gave him quite a shock.
Harry knew that Professor Lupin was a Werewolf Wizard, but this was the first time he had seen Lupin in his transformed state.
Lupin also realized that staying in werewolf form was inappropriate. He looked awkwardly at his claws and asked, somewhat uncomfortably, "Ivan, how do I change back?"
Ivan scratched his head. He wasn't a werewolf, so how would he know? But recalling how Fenrir and others easily shifted between forms, he suggested that Lupin think about the feeling of reverting to his human form on the full moon.
Lupin tried it, and as the thought entered his mind, his body began to react. His sharp claws slowly retracted, his towering frame shrank, and his grotesque head transformed back to its original shape.
"This is simply incredible!" Lupin marveled, realizing that he could transform back into a werewolf at will. He looked eagerly at Ivan and asked again, "What was the potion you gave me? Is it the Wolfsbane Potion? I thought the Wolfsbane Potion available on the market didn't have this effect."
"That's the Improved Wolfsbane Potion I recently developed! It allows a Werewolf Wizard to freely control their transformation for fifty days and remain fully conscious while transformed", Ivan explained. Then, he remembered something and continued, "Oh, right, there's one more thing I forgot to mention. During this period, the Werewolf Wizard will not be able to infect others!"
"So, I can transform at will and won't have to worry about accidentally hurting anyone?" Lupin stepped forward and grabbed Ivan's wrist, his excitement evident in his voice.
"Yes! But the effect only lasts for fifty days. After that, you'll need to take the potion again", Ivan confirmed with a nod.
"Enough, more than enough!" Lupin muttered, then took a few steps back and bowed deeply to Ivan.
"Professor Lupin, what are you doing?" Ivan was taken aback and hurriedly stepped back.
"Thank you for your help to us Werewolf Wizards. If this potion can be widely distributed, I believe the Werewolves in the Wizarding World will have a much better life", Lupin said, looking at Ivan with deep gratitude.
If Ivan's memory served him right, Ivan had only developed the Wolfsbane Potion a couple of years ago. To have created the Improved Wolfsbane Potion so soon after that showed how dedicated Ivan was to improving the lives of Werewolf Wizards.
The Wizards of the Wizarding World detest Werewolf Wizards not only because they lose their sanity during their monthly transformations but also due to the werewolves' ability to infect others.
The Improved Wolfsbane Potion directly addresses both of these issues. If it weren't for the time constraints, Ivan could have already declared that the werewolf community had been cured.
Sirius Black was also overjoyed by this development and joked that if this potion ever became widespread, werewolves might even gain a following of fanatics.
After all, there would be many Wizards eager to transform themselves into werewolves to gain power.
Harry didn't fully understand the significance of the Improved Wolfsbane Potion to Lupin, but that didn't stop him from sharing in their happiness.
However, Ivan quickly tempered their enthusiasm. "Professor Lupin, this new and improved potion requires many rare ingredients to make. It's unlikely to become widespread anytime soon!"
Ivan wouldn't sell the Improved Wolfsbane Potion just because of Lupin's few words. He was well aware that while the Werewolf Wizard community includes kind and law-abiding werewolves like Fenrir and Lupin, the majority have fallen into the ranks of Dark Wizards, surviving through robbery, murder, and petty theft.
During the two Wizarding Wars in the original timeline, most Werewolf Wizards firmly supported the Dark Lord, spreading fear and chaos. Ivan didn't want to empower his enemies.
Hearing Ivan's words, Lupin was somewhat disappointed but didn't dwell on it. It was normal for a new potion to take time to become widespread.
Ivan's speed in improving potions also gave Lupin confidence. Perhaps before long, Ivan would develop a potion that could completely cure werewolves.
"Wolfsbane Potion can wait. Right now, we need to focus on settling Regulus!" Ivan changed the subject, looking at Regulus, who Sirius Black was carrying.
Lupin immediately felt apologetic towards Sirius Black, having been so preoccupied with the Wolfsbane Potion that he had forgotten the main task.
Sirius Black, however, wasn't bothered. He asked Ivan and Lupin to wait while he went to the basement to fetch a coffin. Then, using Apparition, he took them to a Wasteland.
There were many graves here, clearly neglected for a long time. The Tombstones were covered in dirt and leaves, but the inscriptions revealed that those buried here were members of the Black Family.
Ivan glanced to the side and saw a familiar name on one of the Tombstones—Phineas Nigellus Black.
He had seen his portrait in the Headmaster's Office at Hogwarts, the least popular Headmaster in the school's history. According to legend, all the students and Masters at the time detested him.
However, the Black Family members clearly had a different view. The honor section of the inscription read: Phineas Nigellus Black, the most distinguished Headmaster of Hogwarts, recipient of the Order of Merlin, First Class, who made significant contributions to the Wizarding World during his lifetime.
Sirius Black didn't pay attention to the Tombstones or pay respects to anyone buried there. Instead, he took a shovel and began digging in an empty spot.
Lupin and Ivan offered to help, but he declined.
Sirius Black worked from night until the next morning, using no Magic, just sheer physical strength to dig a deep grave. He then carved Regulus's name onto a blank Tombstone and began writing Regulus's honors.
Sirius Black wrote a lot, even mentioning small things like Regulus being praised by the Slytherin Head of House in his fourth year.
Compared to the grand achievements inscribed on other Black Family Tombstones, these details were insignificant, but Sirius Black didn't care about such conventions.
It was more like he was slowly recalling his younger brother's past.
When he ran out of space, Sirius Black solemnly noted on the last line that Regulus was a fighter against the Dark Lord, a true hero!
After completing the inscription, Sirius Black stood up and turned his gaze to Regulus, who had been placed aside, un-petrified but tightly bound.
A person transformed into an Inferi would have their soul trapped within their body, so there was only one way to free Regulus.
"Incendio! (Incendio)" After a long hesitation, Sirius Black clenched his teeth and waved his wand.
A tongue of fire shot out from the tip of the wand, striking Regulus directly and turning him into a blazing torch.
Regulus, already transformed into an Inferi, struggled fiercely, his mouth wide open as he emitted agonizing howls, but to no avail.
Kreacher collapsed to the ground, covering his face and sobbing uncontrollably, repeatedly muttering Regulus's name.
The struggling of the burning Regulus grew weaker, and his howls gradually faded. Ivan could faintly see that Regulus's once twisted, agonized face seemed to have become more peaceful.
Sirius Black stood rooted to the spot, his back to everyone, making it impossible to see his expression.
When the flames finally died down, Sirius Black stepped forward to collect Regulus's remains. He placed many of the relics he had found at home into a coffin and sealed it, burying it in the ground.
After taking care of everything, the despondent Sirius Black led them back to the Black Family's mansion.
Everyone present had been awake all night, especially Ivan and Sirius Black, who had dived into the icy Lake Bottom to retrieve the bodies. Their physical strength and Magic were almost depleted, and they had only managed to endure until now through sheer willpower.
Upon returning to the mansion, they each ate a few pieces of bread to stave off hunger, but no one was in the mood to chat. They all returned to their rooms to rest and slept until the next morning.
During breakfast, Harry curiously asked about the experience of retrieving the bodies from the lake. Sirius Black didn't want Harry to worry, so he only gave a brief account of their encounter with the Inferi, glossing over the most dangerous parts.
Even so, the story of battling Inferi in the dark lake made Harry's heart race. He doubted he would have survived if he had insisted on going along.
Lupin added some details, recounting how he and Dobby had been attacked by Inferi on the lakeshore.
It seemed that when Sirius Black used Petrificus Totalus to hit Regulus in the Lake Bottom, it triggered some kind of restriction, causing the Inferi to attack them on the shore as well.
With Fire Spells significantly weakened, Lupin and Dobby could only alternately use Lumos to fend off the Inferi. When their Magic was nearly depleted, they remembered the potion Ivan had given Lupin.
"After drinking the potion, I transformed into a werewolf and fought off the Inferi blocking our way. I followed the firelight and found you", Lupin summarized.
"So, Ivan summoned a Fiendfyre Phoenix in that cave and burned over a thousand Inferi?" Harry was most interested in this part, wondering what kind of powerful Magic could achieve such a feat.
"That was Fiendfyre. I came across it in the book *Advanced Dark Magic Decoded* while researching Horcruxes. I thought this special Magic might be effective against Voldemort's Horcruxes, so I memorized it", Ivan explained to avoid any misunderstandings.
Ivan then turned to Harry and warned, "Fiendfyre is a very dangerous Dark Magic. It's easy to lose control, and even powerful Wizards can't fully manage it. If we hadn't Apparated in time, we would have been burned to death by the out-of-control Fiendfyre!"
Harry hesitated and nodded.
Ivan didn't say more. For a young witch or wizard like Harry, who was thirteen or fourteen and not very interested in studying, going to the library to learn Magic was almost impossible. So Ivan felt at ease.
After a quick breakfast, Ivan greeted Sirius Black and entered the Black Family's library. He reopened *Advanced Dark Magic Decoded* and successfully found the Counter-Curse for Fiendfyre!
This was why Fiendfyre wasn't classified as an Unforgivable Curse. As long as Wizards knew the Counter-Curse, they could use Magic to control and extinguish Fiendfyre.
However, this Counter-Curse was only effective against small-scale Fiendfyre. If it grew to the size of the Fiendfyre Phoenix in the cave, even the Counter-Curse would be useless.
