Chapter 506: Lanchi Wants to Save the Stray Lambs
Chapter 506: Lanchi Wants to Save the Stray Lambs
Within a magic-powered vehicle traveling on the roads of the Northwest District of South Vantine, the air grew unusually quiet.
In addition to the driver, a prayer priest, a black-haired, green-eyed young woman had appeared in the passenger seat, occasionally humming an off-key tune.
It seemed to be a hymn that the Fate Goddess Church would chant during their morning prayers, but after she changed the tune, it sounded more like a funeral dirge.
The song drilled into Elayne's ears, stirring her brain, and filling her with fear to the point of breakdown.
She had heard that some places in the Northern Continent had poor security, and people with good physiques might be captured and their organs sold for money.
The people in front of her looked like the kind who wouldn't even use anesthesia before taking out her organs.
She didn't understand.
Why were they able to target her so precisely? Why was there such a terrifying presence that could control her, and why was she so unlucky?
Her mind was in chaos, and the more she thought about it, the more her vision flickered between light and darkness.
However, in this dim vision, there was only one point of emerald green, a gem-like color that stood out.
It was a gaze.
The brown-haired, green-eyed young man who was driving still had a gentle look in his eyes, as if he meant no harm.
This moment felt like a lifeline thrown to her as she was drowning.
"Take a deep breath and don't panic," Lanchi said softly.
As his words landed, the amber-eyed black-haired young woman sitting to Elayne's left began to gently pat her back, helping her calm her breath.
"Huuu—"
With all her might, Elayne inhaled a breath, filling her chest, before exhaling it out. This was followed by rapid breathing, her chest heaving as she finally felt her heartbeat slowing down and returning to her control.
"Feeling better?"
Lanchi's tone remained gentle.
Elayne snapped back to attention, her muscles tensing as she regained her guard, staring intently at the driver.
Unknowingly, she had followed the driver's instructions and even felt a momentary sense of reliance on him.
And this guy was the one who tricked her into getting into this car!
"Who exactly are you people?"
Elayne swallowed, her throat dry, and her voice came out slightly hoarse as she asked the question.
She was aware of the terrifyingly powerful person sitting next to her, and she dared not move.
"..."
Lanchi stared at her, not answering.
He continued until he saw her beginning to fear again, no longer putting on a brave front, and instinctively averting her gaze.
"You're too careless," Lanchi finally sighed, looking at her with exasperation.
"..."
Elayne's eyebrows furrowed slightly, not understanding what he meant.
But at that moment, she felt that he didn't seem like an enemy anymore.
"We are the direct subordinates of Bishop Ivanoth of the Destruction Church. Seeing you, a high priest, we naturally want to give you a reminder—the Wilford family is very dangerous. Don't go there recklessly, or you won't return today."
Lanchi took out a spark-shaped holy seal emitting purple mist and placed it in front of Elayne. The center of the seal depicted a skeleton wrapped in Manjushage, the Buddhist lotus flower of rebirth, but also known as the "flower that blooms in the underworld", a symbol that represented the eternal nature of flames—transformation, consumption, and recycling.
The flower petals seemed to be both part of the bone and separate from it, blooming from the flames themselves. It was a terrifying yet exceptionally beautiful symbol of life and death, creation and destruction in delicate balance.
The black-haired Hyberrian also produced an identical seal.
This was the 【Proof of Rebirth-Destruction】that Lanchi had obtained from Phoenix, a direct subordinate who had attacked the Boss Cat restaurant before their departure to the Northern Continent. The encrypted information on the seal could only be deciphered by a bishop.
Meanwhile, the seal in Hyberrian's hand was the Destruction Seal she had obtained from Stocera, a Goddess priestess they had pulled into their ranks during the Villain's Dinner in the Shadow World Cathedral.
Elayne's heart, which had been hanging anxiously, finally settled. Thankfully, they weren't enemies. Perhaps her organs would remain intact after all. And if they were enemies, how could they have possibly discovered her identity with such precision? They must be highly covert and important direct soldiers with higher-level intelligence privileges, already aware of her identity, to recognize her so accurately.
"We're covert agents stationed in the South Vantine Territory and usually don't interact with other priests. Unless there's an emergency, we remain dormant. But with the significant changes happening in South Vantine, we need to exchange intelligence to determine how we can assist you further." Lanchi gazed intently at Elayne as he spoke solemnly.
Elayne nodded. "What about her?" She pointed slightly towards Talia beside her, inquiring tentatively. In Elayne's opinion, the Destruction faction shouldn't have such a mysterious and powerful existence, even surpassing the Destruction Saint Son, Salomon.
"... " Talia merely took out a pink, Sacred-grade Saint's Certificate, not allowing Elayne to see the specific seal or style, before putting it away again. Its shape was unfamiliar to Elayne, and she was certain it wasn't a forgery. She was also confident that no such Saint existed in any of the Resurrection Church's South Continent branches! Elayne's heart raced as she felt many things falling into place. Perhaps all of this was orchestrated by the mysterious bishop from the North Continent!
"Don't ask who this young lady is. Knowing too much might lead Ivanoth to decide that you shouldn't live," Hyberrian said in a cold tone, offering a well-intentioned reminder.
Elayne shuddered and nodded meekly, no longer daring to stare at the golden-eyed woman. "Tonight, we of the Destruction faction will collaborate with a group of mysterious individuals to kill Miss Hyberrian, the Duchess who resides in the Wilford household. Our task is to disguise ourselves as civilians within a fixed range in the South Vantine Territory, carry self-destruct spells, and await instructions from the Great Destruction Saint Son, Salomon. We don't know the specifics of our mission and will only understand once we receive his orders," Elayne explained slowly, providing them with crucial information.
Her revelation plunged the car into silence once more. Lanchi, Hyberrian, and Talia exchanged glances. Talia nodded, indicating to the other two that Elayne wasn't lying. Although no one knew of her lie-detecting talent, an eighth-rank powerhouse proficient in mana probing could infer the credibility of one's words through mana fluctuations.
Fortunately, Lanchi had managed to capture this Resurrection follower and extract valuable information; otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to uncover the Resurrection Church's plans for tonight. Unfortunately, the intelligence was tightly sealed, and they still couldn't discern the exact nature of the Church's scheme.
"Can you locate Salomon?" Lanchi inquired further.
"No, we can't. We can only receive commands from him and cannot initiate contact," Elayne replied, shaking her head.
Hyberrian maintained her composure, her acting skills holding firm. She knew the enemy was coming, but she hadn't anticipated their arrival to be so swift and decisive. Talia sensed Hyberrian's fear and wanted to offer her comfort. Just as Talia was about to render Elayne unconscious again, Lanchi spoke up.
"As I suspected... Ivanoth and Salomon plan to abandon you tonight. Poor children..." Lanchi murmured, his emerald eyes filled with compassion as he looked at Elayne with an earnest desire to save her.
Hyberrian: "..." The fear that had gripped Hyberrian moments ago now transformed into a different, all-too-familiar kind of fear. She recognized the look in Talia's and Lanchi's eyes, understanding their attempt to comfort her. And Lanchi's manner of consolation held that familiar tone.
Hyberrian smiled with relief.
