Chapter 505: The Vote
Chapter 505: The Vote
In the 12th hour since the gravitational funnel appeared, a horde of 3,521 monsters successfully reached the western shore of the Tsushima Strait.
Throughout their journey, these monsters wreaked havoc on a massive scale.
Any building over five stories tall was either shattered into pieces by brute force monsters or reduced to rubble by the spells of magic-wielding monsters. Even those who didn't live in buildings were not spared.
As each monster moved through densely populated areas, they released large amounts of carbon dioxide, covering a radius of about 2 to 3 kilometers. Anyone caught within this area quickly succumbed to carbon dioxide poisoning within a few dozen seconds due to the rapidly increasing concentration of the gas.
The monster horde marched south, passing through major cities like Kyoto, Nagoya, Nara, Kobe, Okayama, and Hiroshima—each a densely populated urban center in Japan.
Almost every city was devastated, with countless buildings destroyed and an untold number of lives lost.
Su Yu received a preliminary estimate from the authorities, suggesting that between 6 to 8 million Japanese people would die in this catastrophe.
Even the Chinese, who have a deep-seated enmity with Japan, found it difficult to celebrate such a high death toll. Instead, they expressed condolences to the Japanese people on social media.
During these 10 hours of what felt like the end of the world, no international military forces dared to land on the Japanese islands to provide aid.
The flying monsters created by the Skrulls were too formidable. China, Russia, and Korea sent nearly 40,000 drones to Japan, but almost half were shot down by the flying monsters. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces' entire air fleet was also destroyed.
Rescue efforts could not reach the mainland, and pilots could only watch helplessly as the Japanese people faced this catastrophe.
The disaster also drew significant international attention.
Media outlets around the world were in a frenzy, with the front pages of major newspapers dominated by the crisis. People from all over the globe turned their eyes to the Japanese islands.
Apart from a few who took pleasure in the suffering, most people felt a sense of fear, unease, and shock.
With millions of Japanese dead, the question loomed: Could this happen to other countries next? How many more humans would die when the Skrulls unleashed their full power in the final battle? And would humanity ever see a victorious day?
Pessimism spread rapidly online, infecting everyone who was connected.
Some pessimists even suffered mental breakdowns, taking sleeping pills to escape the world permanently.
However, Su Yu and his companions had no time for despair, as the monster horde was about to arrive, and they were ready to engage in a fierce battle.
Currently, on Tsushima Island, Su Yu and the other great cultivators, including Senior Yang and Emperor Taizong, were floating in the sky, facing the southeastern strait.
On the island's open ground, Zhong Feng stood on the back of an ice dragon, his expression grave as he considered the tactics to employ.
The players on the island were lining up to board helicopters, preparing to head to the rear base in Seoul.
Su Yu took out his phone and read a message from Comrade Zhang, then turned to address all the great cultivators at the Divine Separation stage:
"Seniors, according to the message from Comrade Zhang, the monster horde has reached Fukuoka Prefecture on the other side, and they are now just 100 kilometers away. We need to be prepared."
The great cultivators did not respond, but their faces were serious.
Suddenly, a Daoist senior, dressed in a black and white robe with a yin-yang symbol on his chest, spoke up:
"Su, the monster horde hasn't entered the sea yet. Should we strike while they are halfway across, using our mobility and strength to deal a significant blow and then retreat quickly?"
Su Yu's mind raced with excitement. This was a brilliant idea!
However, he wouldn't make a decision on his own in front of the great cultivators. He respectfully asked, "Elders, what do you think?"
"I believe it's better to play it safe," Elder Zuo Ci suggested. "Once the monsters swim over and expend a lot of energy, we can rest and use the plants below to our advantage in a defensive battle. There's no need to take such a risk."
"Then how about this," Emperor Liu Che proposed, stepping forward. "We have 21 of us, plus Su Yu and Zhong Feng, making 23 in total. Let's have a vote and go with the majority."
"Agreed," the cultivators chorused.
But at that moment, Chen Xing, who had been playing on her phone while perched on Su Yu's shoulder, wasn't happy. She looked up from her screen. "Hey, Big Beard! Did you forget about me?"
In truth, Chen Xing wasn't upset because Emperor Liu Che hadn't included her. She just wanted to cast an extra vote to support Su Yu, as every vote mattered in this small-scale poll.
Emperor Liu Che was taken aback but quickly laughed. "Alright, alright, we'll count you in. If the votes are tied, Su Yu will make the final decision."
The cultivators then held a small vote.
According to the tally, 8 cultivators voted to launch a preemptive strike, 10 voted to stay and defend, and the remaining 6 were indifferent and didn't vote.
In the end, the defensive strategy won by a narrow margin of two votes.
It's worth noting that Su Yu had initially wanted to vote for the preemptive strike. However, after considering that he still had some pre-battle preparations to make, he and Chen Xing decided to vote for the defensive strategy, which influenced the outcome.
After the vote, the cultivators didn't say much more. They rested on the spot, preparing for the final battle.
Su Yu flew over to Zhong Feng and said, "Take your Holy Angels and let's go pick the Cherry Bombs."
"Cherry Bombs?"
"Exactly."
Su Yu and Zhong Feng, along with 500 Holy Angels, headed to the northern planting area of Tsushima Island.
The Cherry Bombs were now fully ripe, hanging from the branches, bright and inviting.
Su Yu instructed the Holy Angels to gather the Cherry Bombs and explained to Zhong Feng:
"These Cherry Bombs are incredibly powerful, capable of injuring even Fourth-Stage cultivators. Most importantly, they deal magical damage. While the Skrull monsters have strong physical defenses, the six I killed earlier had zero magic resistance."
"During the battle, find an opportunity to have the Holy Angels throw the Cherry Bombs at the monsters with the lowest magic resistance. It should deal significant damage."
"I see, got it. I'll keep that in mind," Zhong Feng nodded in understanding.
As a Fifth-Stage unit, each Holy Angel had a small storage space hidden in the center of their wings. They filled these spaces with 50 to 60 ripe Cherry Bombs, nearly maxing out their capacity.
Once the angels were almost done, Zhong Feng had a thought. "Su Yu, the Shadow Wraiths also have storage spaces. Should we let them carry some Cherry Bombs too?"
"No, no," Su Yu smiled and shook his head. "For the Shadow Wraiths, we can have them carry plants that are more suitable for them."
