Chapter 5: What Exactly Are Your Intentions?
Chapter 5: What Exactly Are Your Intentions?
Kuro closed his eyes, crossed his arms, and leaned back in his chair without speaking.
"Why aren't you running?"
It was Kas who spoke.
"It's not like we haven't tried running before", Mendel groaned, clutching his head in agony. "But whenever we approach the island's edge, White Phantom appears and drags us back. No matter what method we try, we can't escape."
They couldn't leave either. Food supplies arrived only when merchant ships passed by, forcing them to buy supplies at extortionate prices. Then they'd wait for that demon to visit every two weeks.
"Navyofficer, you're good people—I won't let harm come to you. Hurry and leave! White Phantom is a demon. She'll soon discover you're here!"
"Kas, gather the Navy. Prepare for battle!"
Kuro suddenly opened his eyes and ordered.
"At once!"
Kas saluted and rushed out to mobilize the Navy.
"You—" Mendel wept with gratitude. "You should flee while you still can! You're no match for that demon!"
Kuro scratched his head. "No choice. It's already too late."
His Observation Haki had detected a lifeform rapidly approaching. Of course Kuro possessed Haki—decades of cultivation weren't in vain. Though it was just an external cheat ability, he had refined it to surpass even the original creators' mastery. Kuro had truly perfected his craft.
Safety first.
To achieve this goal, Kuro had secretly trained relentlessly without drawing attention. Through this natural progression, he had developed Haki. His Observation Haki alone could encompass the entire island!
"If Town Mayor's words are true, White Phantom should also have Observation Haki", Kuro mused. "Judging from her distance, her mastery rivals mine."
This was East Blue—a place where Haki was unheard of. Suddenly encountering someone with such profound Haki prowess was alarming. Such an individual was beyond East Blue's capacity to handle.
"But if she remains unknown, who knows what she's scheming? Lingering in East Blue will eventually become a disaster. Eliminating her before she gains notoriety will prevent future problems."
Kuro resolved his decision. He wanted East Blue to remain a weak, ordinary place—no strongmen lurking here with hidden ambitions. If they were truly formidable, they should head to the Grand Line! Let them unleash their ambitions elsewhere! What could they accomplish in this feeble region?
Outside, Kas led the Navy in tense anticipation.
The town was encircled by dense jungle. Though daylight reigned, the depths remained pitch-black, as though capable of swallowing people whole.
Shhh...
The jungle rustled.
Kas's eyes narrowed toward a rooftop.
A white figure had appeared there, gleaming under the sunlight.
Slender in form, covered in white fur, this upright wolf-like monster gazed down at them.
"Freya is White Phantom!"
The townspeople screamed in terror.
"Fire!"
Kas raised his arm and roared.
Pew pew pew!
Lead bullets rained toward the sky. In the next instant, the white-furred Monster vanished, reappearing swiftly before the Navy ranks.
Crash!
The Monster extended its hand, delivering a heavy blow that sent a Navy soldier flying backward. The man's body seemed drained of vitality—his face turned ghostly pale as he collapsed limply.
"You—"
The Monster's deep voice rumbled. "You summoned Navy soldiers? Unforgivable! You shall receive punishment!"
Its form blurred, darting rapidly among the soldiers. With mere touches, Navy men collapsed one after another, their bodies drained like the first.
Within moments, dozens of Navy soldiers lost their fighting capability.
Kas's hand trembled around his gun. This Monster was too strong—it crushed any fighting spirit.
At that moment, Town Mayor's door swung open. Kuro emerged, military sword at his side.
"Sergeant Kuro's here!"
The Navy soldiers immediately rallied. "With Sergeant leading us, we'll definitely win!"
"We won't disgrace Sergeant!"
The terrified soldiers, seeing Kuro appear, suddenly found courage surging through them like an adrenaline shot as they gritted their teeth and charged toward the white-furred Monster.
"A branch officer's petty Sergeant? What can he possibly do?"
The Monster extended its hand, vanishing instantly to appear behind the soldiers.
Silence.
One by one, the Navy soldiers collapsed helplessly.
Witnessing this, Kuro's eyes flickered with surprise.
"You monster!"
Kas roared, raising his gun to fire.
Bang!
The bullet didn't even graze the Monster before it reappeared, striking Kas in the abdomen. He collapsed motionless.
"Navy... Navy's defeated!"
Town Mayor Mendel nearly ground his teeth to dust. Snatching up a pair of scissors, he trembled forward at the Monster. "Monster! Don't you want us dead? I'll tell you this—even if we die, we'll never submit to you again!"
The old Mayor's roar rallied the desperate villagers. They gathered together, glaring defiantly at the white-furred Monster.
Even in death, they would stand proudly!
For a moment, the Monster stood frozen. Then its voice deepened. "Then I shall grant your wish!"
Whoosh!
The Navy was no match. The unarmed villagers stood even less chance. Under the Monster's high-speed attacks, townspeople fell one after another.
Among the fallen, only the Monster and Kuro remained standing.
"Just you left."
It pointed at Kuro, speaking in its deep tone. "Come to think of it, I've seen your type before—an insignificant red-nosed pirate who pretends to be mighty despite lacking true strength. You're completely alone. What will you do now?"
In its view, this petty Sergeant was clearly paralyzed with fear, too terrified to move.
"Ah, look at this town—because of you, it's been reduced to this state! Die in regret!"
The white-furred Monster dashed forward, delivering a punch straight toward Kuro.
"I mean, you're a girl—why act so evil? You haven't killed anyone yet, right?"
Smack!
The punch was caught.
Kuro gripped its fist while speaking calmly.
"What?! Blocked?!"
The Monster's body stiffened. Instinctively, it tried to retreat. But at that moment, Kuro's hand twisted, grabbing the white fur on its arm and pulling forcefully.
Beneath the fur was a breathtakingly beautiful girl with waist-length white hair cascading down.
"Haki?!"
The girl stared at the blackened skin on Kuro's hand, her eyes widening. "How do you possess Haki?!"
Kuro tossed away the white fur. "My subordinates had their strength drained by you—so you're a Devil Fruit user."
"Darn you!"
The girl's form bent forward as her arms spread out. Armament Haki covered from her elbows, her bright large eyes flashing red. "Essence!"
Boom!
The ground beneath her feet split into a deep trench. Her hands opened and closed violently, lunging straight at Kuro.
Yet the man across from her seemed to anticipate everything. Facing this attack, he simply leaned sideways, easily evading.
The girl surged past Kuro, crashing directly into a nearby house.
Huuuummmng!
The entire house collapsed. The immense force generated a shockwave that tore through the jungle behind the building, carving a massive trench.
"This can't be happening!"
The girl emerged from the rubble, eyeing Kuro warily.
Her Observation Haki could cover the entire island. With her mastery of Observation Haki, she had never failed to predict movements before. Yet this man had evaded her attack in advance.
Which meant—his Observation Haki surpassed hers!
And that Armament Haki capable of resisting her own...
Kuro frowned at the wreckage as well.
Such destructive power. Powerful Observation Haki. Armament Haki. And being a Devil Fruit user...
"You—why are you hiding in East Blue? What exactly are your intentions?"
Both shouted in unison.
