Chapter 499: Devil Fruits – Some Really Are Useless
Chapter 499: Devil Fruits – Some Really Are Useless
Klah’s return didn’t stir much surprise. Over the past six months, he’d eliminated countless pirates – one more or less made no difference.
Granted, this pirate’s Bounty was the highest he’d ever claimed, exceeding 100 million.
But so what?
In front of a superior who’d dared confront the Four Emperors head-on, a Bounty over 100 million wasn’t that impressive.
That Gale guy was just a hulking brute. On land, his size might’ve been troublesome, but aboard a ship? Sazil could’ve handled him, albeit with serious injuries.
Law, however, kept twitching his eyelid as Klah returned.
Of course. This was their faction’s style.
Black Wolf and White Butterfly never left survivors. Only a few lucky underlings had escaped their wrath to spread tales of terror.
They were a ruthless Navy branch.
And just as terrifyingly strong.
“Slowpoke.” Lida shot Klah a glance, pulling a banana from her snack shoulder bag and peeling it lazily.
She wouldn’t have needed a single move to finish that opponent.
“By the way, Klah – you’ve mastered the Six Styles Mystic Art? When did you learn that?”
She finished the banana in three bites, already rummaging through her bag again.
The Six Styles Mystic Art was the ultimate technique achieved after perfecting all Six Styles to a certain realm – a devastating shockwave. Lida knew it too, though she rarely used it. Her innate abilities already produced shockwaves.
Suddenly, Kuro snatched her bag, digging through its contents.
“Give it back!” Lida yelped, hopping up like someone robbed of their most cherished treasure.
But with Kuro’s growth spurt, even jumping, she barely reached his waist now – like trying to swat a hanging egg.
“Stop whining. Just checking.” Kuro muttered, flipping through the bag. His expression soured as he pulled out a spiral-shaped Devil Fruit resembling a Hami melon. He sighed. “Knew it.”
A Devil Fruit!
“Eh? Again?” Lida froze mid-lunge, tilting her head in confusion.
“You’re asking me? I’d like to ask you too.” Kuro rolled his eyes. “Don’t tell me your damn Devil Fruit ability somehow attracts the demons inside other Devil Fruits?”
“What’s that mean?” Lida blinked.
“Forget it. Just… your absurd luck – I don’t know if it’s a blessing or curse.”
Handing the snack bag back, Kuro passed the Devil Fruit to Klah. “Check it out. This must be the one that pirate had. If nothing went wrong, that is.”
“Lida’s miracle luck…” Klah accepted the fruit, glancing at her with a wry smile.
He wasn’t shocked, though.
During their joint operations in the past six months, similar incidents had occurred. Once, he’d barely stopped Lida from devouring a Devil Fruit whole – she’d have exploded otherwise.
Beyond that, Lida’s solo missions had netted countless Devil Fruit users. After defeating them, her shoulder bag inevitably attracted new Devil Fruits, much like Marshall D. Teach’s ability – less precise, but still reliable.
Kuro even had a display cabinet in his office holding five Devil Fruits from Lida’s collection.
Selling them? Pointless. With Pegasus Island and Shabondy’s profits, money wasn’t an issue.
Giving them to others? None were strong enough.
He’d asked his subordinates – not a single volunteer.
Out of five, four were Zoans, one a Paramecia.
The Paramecia, according to Devil Fruit records, was the Paper-Paper Fruit – a Superman-type allowing transformation into paper.
Honestly? Useless.
Waterproof? Fireproof? Not a chance.
Even with Haki, you’d waste too much energy creating infinite paper blades.
And anyone with enough Haki would avoid weakening themselves, gaining avoidable weaknesses.
Sazil declined. He could eat Devil Fruits, but after tagging along with this group, he’d become picky.
Donald had zero interest – a pure martial artist, and not even stationed at Shabondy.
Fen Ni couldn’t use them. Ju Geng refused.
The Zoans were worse.
Dogo Dogo Fruit’s Pomeranian form? Useless. Might even make you fluffy.
Neko Neko Fruit’s tabby form? Useless. Might even make you fat.
Gyu Gyu Fruit’s boar form?
Wait – what connection did boars have to the Gyu Gyu Fruit?
Don’t ask. Just accept it’s an even-toed ungulate!
Like how the Gyu Gyu Fruit’s giraffe form had nothing to do with cows.
The original CP9 member who’d rejoined the World Government – the long-nosed guy – had the Gyu Gyu Fruit’s giraffe form.
The last one was the weirdest.
Uo Uo Fruit’s carp form.
When Kuro first saw the name, even he’d been stunned in his office.
Uo Uo Fruit?
What kind of Devil Fruit was that?
Did it let you do a water splash leap? Survive drowning at sea?
Or maybe mimic Fishman Karate like a fishman?
But you’re a Devil Fruit user – you can’t touch water anyway! What good’s water then?
A fishman who can’t swim?
Kuro was morbidly curious.
Compared to these, the Paramecia was almost useful.
But even that? Useless in Kuro’s eyes.
He never bought the saying “There are no useless Devil Fruits, only useless users.”
Logia types were supreme – unmatched!
The Quake-Quake Fruit was king!
The Float-Float Fruit made you immortal!
Mythical Zoans were legendary!
Try giving Garp the Uo Uo Fruit’s carp form and see who wins.
If strong users alone decided power, he wouldn’t have waited twenty years to eat the Float-Float Fruit.
Devil Fruits needed raw strength!
Otherwise, what separated the elite from the trash?
“If this is the Multiply-Multiply Fruit…” Kuro stroked his chin, eyeing his subordinates. “Anyone interested?”
Sazil hesitated. That giant? He’d seen it firsthand. If he ate this fruit, he could grow that big. If he grew huge…
He could…
Sazil pressed his lips, face darkening as he recalled something terrifying.
“No thanks.” He declined.
What’s the point of growing? Just makes you a bigger target.
You think his current size got hit enough? Bigger just made enemies’ punches land easier.
He wasn’t dumb.
